Formal Maternity gown

Does anyone know where I can find a very nice formal maternity gown? I am attending a wedding in July and it is a very formal upscale wedding. Everything I am finding for maternity is so plain and not very formal for this type of wedding (groom is in the NFL). Any help or insight I can get would be greatly appreciated! I am really looking for a floor length gown.

Pink Blush Maternity sometimes has formal gowns, i'm not sure if they would be formal enough, though $:\$ That's the only place I can think of right now.

Imho go to a tailor and have a fancy dress made for YOU!! I'm doing that for one special dress for me later this summer. There are cheap (like Chinatown) and pricey (think Kiton) tailors avail. But actually a lot of flows a-line or princess gown type dresses (non maternity) will prob be great too.

I would definitely check out ASOS, they have super cute stuff and you have plenty of time to get it shipped. If it's too plain you could accessorize it up.

Also Tiffany Rose looks like they have some super cute stuff that is more formal. Pricey, but you could always check out that brand on resale sites like thredUP or eBay. I can't imagine people really wear them more than once or twice and want to make a bit of their money back.

Thanks! I am thinking of getting a dress from pink blush for another wedding I have in September. This particular wedding is more black tie.

making it pretty difficult for those of us carrying a little bun in the oven lol

I would look into one of the Rent the Runway type services that does maternity clothes. That way you don't have to actually buy an expensive dress you won't need again. Like borrowforyourbump.com or minefornine.com

I have no experience with that, but that wedding sounds like so much fun!!! I would probably go into a high end department store (Neiman Marcus, etc) to start and ask someone in their formalwear department to help you choose dresses. There are probably a lot of non-maternity flowy empire waist gowns you could have altered so they would work with a baby bump.

We had a lot of black tie charity events my first 2 pregnancies David's bridal has a maternity section for dresses and they will tailor there. Seraphine and Tiffany rose are 2 other good places to look. A pea in the pod actually has some nice long gowns as well.

ASOS or Rent the Runway. ASOS has great maternity clothes, and Rent the Runway might have something bump-friendly for you. If you read through the reviews, there are often some from pregnant women who wore the dress. Plus, it's a good way to wear designer at a fancy wedding and not have to pay for it!

Otherwise, I'd say to just try to find a simple black floor-length gown and splurge on shoes and accessories and have your hair done professionally.

I think I might do this. I like the idea of getting a non maternity dress that is more flowing and having someone tailor it. The only thing is your body changes so quickly!

Yes I had to have material added and then 2 weeks later taken back in. Don't let bloat convince you that you need it bigger!

@Briannasteve have you ever ordered from ASOS? Make sure you look at the size chart, UK sizing is pretty small compared to US sizing. I usually go up 2-3 sizes.

I found the US site which gives you US sizes, but they are sold out of a lot of sizes. Many of them are only available in one size.

Honestly you may be able to wear a normal dress just a size or two up. I wore a normal dress actually in my normal size that had an empire waist at 4 months (and I had already gained well over 10lbs at that point). Maybe borrow from a friend and/or find bump friendly waistlines.

Second (or third?) Rent the Runway. They have a "bump friendly" filter when you're searching and the reviews will often have pictures of people actually wearing the dress in real life. If found their customer service to be pretty good too.

Absolutely rent the runway!!! There are plenty of "bump friendly dresses." Also, they have some brick and mortar stores so you can try stuff on too. Maybe one would be near you or the wedding?

I live in NJ and the wedding is in CA. So I need to be able to travel with the dress also. lol I might try a local store and ask them to custom fit a dress. I will check out rent the runway also. Thank you all so much for your advice!

I just looked at rent the runway and I don't think I can do it because I am traveling in for the wedding. I would have to have the dress shipped to the hotel I am staying at and if it didn't fit... I think I would be totally screwed.

Totally get the stress of fitting. I've gone to Bloomingdales and tried the exact style of label on when I've been nervous. Also, if you are in NJ, they have a store in NYC so you can try it on before! I went to their store in Vegas and it is just like shopping in your richest friends closet. I have a wedding in October and I'm pretty much set on wearing this black satin Halston heritage dress from rtr.

I wore a banana republic maxi dress that had a lot of stretch to it- very fitted to two weddings and my own baby shower... It was my normal size. It all depends on what you're buying and it has to be the right material.

Gilt.com also has a lot of maternity shops which feature special occasion dresses... Might be an option.

Tiffany Rose would be a good option too. A lot of celebrities have used them and I ordered a wedding dress from them and ended up returning it because it wasn't what I wanted. But the quality was good and the return process was easy!

I'd try Rent the Runway. They have maternity gowns and honestly, when will you wear it again? Rent the dress & then return it after the event.

And they have GORGEOUS gowns.

I thought those were ridiculous last time. Then I had a baby and hated every picture taken of me thereafter, I had a vomit stain on my hospital gown. I'm definitely going to cute up a bit before I allow pictures. Not like, schedule a stylist-cute-up but change my gown and wash my face.

Not to thread Jack but I got a few cotton bathrobes for the hospital last time. Great because I didn't need to wear pants and my top was covered nicely- and it was easy access to the boobs!

While rent the runway doesn't specifically have maternity clothes, they do have an option for "bump friendly" under body type. And one thing that's nice is that users post pics and so often times you can actually see what the dress looks like on a super pregnant person in roughly your size. I just ordered a floor length gown that's kind of empire cut and flowy and thus blump friendly (that's all I got right now, but seriously, that bloat tho). I think there are similar services that specialize in maternity, but I've been extremely happy with RTR's selection and customer service (free backup size, free fashion tape and such) so I'll probably stick with them all the way through.
