Motrin for teething pain?

Is it okay to give Motrin at night for what seems to be teething pain?
DS has been waking a lot at night, which is unusual for him. Last night we gave him some Motrin (1/2 an infant dose) and he slept great!
Is it okay to do that until he pops a tooth? How do I know its teething pain keeping him up and not something else?
We've only just started the Motrin because he had his first fever, so he was checked by our Pedi last week. She recommended the tylenol/motrin rotation to keep his fever in check. Fever is gone, but he's still on antibiotics for a few more days for the bacterial infection.
I'm just worried about using medicine for preventative purposes.
Recommendations?
