Weekly Randoms 5/3

Last night we went on our first daycare tour, and I think I might cry.  The wait lists everywhere are like 1-3 years long.

Re: Weekly Randoms 5/3

  • I've been searching for crib bedding for three days and have yet to find anything I like within our budget. WHY IS TINY BEDDING SO EXPENSIVE?! And why does nursery furniture not come in sets like adult furniture? I want everything to match and the only matching sets I can find are ridiculously expensive. I can't bring myself to spend over $1,000 on a crib and dresser!!!

Why don't you look at goodwill or other second hand stores or yard sales for stuff that looks relatively similar and then paint it/add matching hardware? I'm thinking of going this route because I have sticker shock after looking at stuff.

Yes I second this!  I actually have a bunch of baby consignment stores added onto my instagram feed and am on guard for the items I want.  I also have offerup downloaded on my phone, and this evening I'm gonna go pick up a brand new Snap N Go for $13!  Saweeeet!
  • I fully support that choice @kmolleltz. I did that yesterday and have zero regrets.

  • I can't stop eating bagels with cream cheese.
@sportiegrl1213 me toooooooo.  There's a bagel place on the first floor of our bldg and I can never resist the fresh scent of bagels in the morning!

  • I've been away all weekend and probs shoulda checked in here before posting a thread about OffersUp and doubling info. Ooops! I was just so excited about our loot!

I'm doing the same, @mrszoess , and piecing together our bed set. Our nursery theme is SUBTLE vintage disneyland so we don't want to plaster the room with cartoons...just little nods to disney here and there.

I remember finding them at a cafe in Moshi but you're near Arusha right? That would be quite the trip to get a bagel. lol

Can we ship you some @kmolleltz ?  Is the post reliable where you are?  If we can't send bagels, I'll send you non perishables that are non-existent there!
  • @annabenanna I feel the same way!  We're on a few waitlists and we've checked out a bunch of other places that I hated.  Already one of my favorite places pushed back their first opening from February 2017 to past April, so that's out.  At this point, there's really only one that we liked that I think we may possibly be able to get into.  I really don't know what we're going to do if that doesn't work out.  Even the places we didn't like and in home providers were waitlisted until after we need to start too.  WTF?!

  • @Blonde1817 , there was another mom on the tour yesterday who is due Sept, but she was also looking for January (like us), and so she asked if I'd be interested in a nanny share!  I'm gonna definitely explore that option and see what it looks like.  With SO being so picky ("they put babies in those saucer things?  so bad for the legs!" and comments like "this place is too dark for our baby"  and "there's not enough outdoor time".), I think it'll take a while to find the perfect childcare solution. :(  I'm kinda panicky.

hahah @annabenanna and @sportiegrl1213  generous offer, though by the time they arrived they would probably be in terrible condition. haha

@mrszoess - I'm definitely leaning towards piecing the bedding together. I ordered a dust ruffle, bumper pad, and sheet from Babies-R-Us just now and we'll see how they look together. I don't really have an eye for this kind of stuff. :/

@MRSCORKER - I looked at two Goodwills and one Dirty Cheap this weekend and found nothing. I guess it's one of those things where I'll have to check constantly until I find something. Not my favorite thing to do, but I guess it'll be worth it if it saves us a lot of money.

Thanks for the suggestions, you guys!

Petty problem: DS has been napping for 2.5 hours. He's in a phase where he only naps with me, in a bed. Typically my pregnant self loves nap time, but I woke up over an hour ago and I've been browsing Pinterest for healthy muffin recipes ever since. Now I'm starving and want to bake, but I hate to wake a sleeping baby. WHY IS LYFE SO HARD.
  • Just wondering based on the bedding talk, and seeing it in so many stores, if people know about the alleged hazards of crib bedding? I hope this isn't taken as a UO and I mean it in NO way as a critique if you know and are choosing to use it, but I just have always been told not to use bumpers so I wasn't sure if everyone had heard of that before deciding whether or not to use them, just in case?Sorry if there's already been a discussion or if I'm just missing some info as a FTM

No bumpers, ever. They're a HUGE hazard, especially to infants. It's one of those products that should be banned (like drop-sided cribs) but isn't. Definitely not worth the risk of using them!
  • @UponAStar16 - I've always heard that they're fine until baby can roll over, move around, etc. That's about about 6 months old, I think.

To me, a crib looks incomplete without the bumper pads. That being said, I would never jeopardize my daughter's safety for the "look." I planned on using them until she started to roll over and then in the closet they'll go!

I'm skipping the bumpers too.  Just too paranoid!

@CopperBoom86 - I really don't want to sound preachy, but it's actually the opposite! Infants who can't roll over often still find a way to move around their crib. If they get an arm stuck in between the crib and bumper, they don't have the strength to "unstuck" themselves and that's bad news. If you MUST use a bumper, wait until your LO is well past strong enough to pull themselves of harm's way.
  • @annabenanna Word. I applied last week for the nursery my son attends- 18 month wait list!!!! I should have applied the day I got my BFP but that just felt premature. Now, though, it'd mean I'd only have a 16 month wait. Ugh. Oh yeah, and I don't even want a spot until May 2017!

@CopperBoom I have one word for you: IKEA.

@kmolletz This is my second expat pregnancy and there is just something so fucking disappointing about not being able to get comfort food. Like real bagels. I haven't found them yet but at least I can find bread in the shape of a bagel and pretend.

  • @kmalls - That's interesting! I've never heard that, but it makes sense. I'm going to look into it a bit more, but it's sounding like bumpers are a bad idea, altogether.

@Paturkey - I didn't think about Ikea. I've never shopped there, but I've heard of the cheap greatness from friends. I'll have to check it out!

@kmalls I read the same thing. It's also a suffocation hazard because if the baby finds themself against one they can't breathe through the material. Although I did see somewhere bumpers that were made out of a breathable material so that even if the baby is against the bumper it can breathe through it. Honestly, I thought it was standard now that using bumpers is dangerous, along with the drop side crib. I assumed they don't sell regular bumpers anymore. I'm not going to use any that's for sure.

  • @CopperBoom86 someone mentioned to me recently that they used mesh/breathable bumpers...not sure how they compare safety wise or if there's a purpose other than the appearance, but thought I'd mention it. The bumpers do look super cute but ever since I was warned about them I just get an awful feeling when I see them. It's so unethical for everywhere to advertise/sell such cute looking hazards!

Everything I researched said to use these mesh bumpers. I registered for one. They have a ton at BRU.

Yes! If they're really that hazardous to babies, they should ban them, not put them not the cover of every baby bedding website!

  • I'm about to strangle my teenager. My husband let him stay home from school today because he didn't feel well. He had a headache all day yesterday and he says he still does. He thinks that because he doesn't feel good he's allowed to watch YouTube videos on his phone all day. I said that if he has a headache, he doesn't need to be doing that. Find something else to do or I take the phone away. He's all mad now because "there's nothing to do." I'm sick of this constant battle, he knows the rules in my house. Sorry your mom didn't bother to spend time with you and let you do whatever you wanted. That's not how it works around here. I'm ready to break the phones and the game consoles.
