We got the Progenity testing done and my OB still did a NT test as well. We got our results in exactly 7 days and everything was normal!!

I got my blood drawn on Thursday for the Counsyl, right at my OB's office.  My doc says they don't do NT scan with the NIPT anymore.

With my last pregnancy, I got MaterniT21.  For that one I had to go to a different office, meet with a genetic counselor, and get the NT scan.  I guess things are progressing which is good.

@dorkiness - With my first pregnancy I was under 35 with no real risk factors, so only got the integrated screening.  They only reason I got more for these pregnancies was that I am over 35 so higher risk.

  • I'm getting the blood draw on Thursday for my testing but they lab says the results take 3 WEEKS to come in. I may very well lose my mind.

  • We are not doing genetic testing. We will love our child no matter what and I've heard of way too many of these tests being wrong anyways so why put myself and my husband through that.
  • I met with my OB today and the only way for me to get the NIPT is to go finf another OB elsewhere and have them submit it. So not only would it be the cost of the test, but also the blood draw, office visit, etc. While we really want it, it just seems like so much of a hassle. I convinced SO to wait until the NT scan and if all comes back normal then we will decide if we still want to go elsewhere. We also both had extensive genetic screening (both same ethnicity and wanted to be sure) so we know what we are carriers for (different things luckily) so at least that rules out SMA, Tay Sachs, and some of the other big ones.

@BmcD2016 I am also due the 30th and since I was pushed back my appointments are kind of scheduled at strange times (6,10,14 weeks instead of 8,12,16...) so chances are I won't find out until July. My June appt would be way too early.
  • Sorry to revive an older thread, but I have a question about the NT scan. I went in for what I thought was a typical 8 week sono (1st appt with this baby). They started the sono as transvaginal and realized the baby was much bigger than anticipated, so they did a normal sono. The tech took her measurements and we were in and out in about 15 minutes. I received news that the nuchal translucency was abnormally high and I'm wondering if there is a chance it was mismeasured? I'm waiting for cell-free dna blood work, but the results will take 10 days. Is the NT scan very different than a normal sono? I didn't have blood work before and was given no ratio or odds, just asked to do the Qnatal exam for more info as a next step.

  • @blessdtxas an NT scan is a typical ultrasound, they just take very precise measurements of femur length, NT and nasal bone and a few others. Mine took almost an hour, but I'm pregnant with twins (and they were less than interested in cooperating for measurements). 15 minutes isn't outside the realm of possibility if LO was cooperative and in good position. I'm not sure of the liklihood of mismeasurement but there's always the potential for human error but it sounds like everyone is pretty confident if they suggested further testing rather than a re-do of the NT scan. Hope your bloodwork comes back okay.

@KilgraveMadeMeDoIt do you have any data on the false negative rate for the NIPS? I didn't realize they could even have false negatives until very recently and now I'm curious (and my Google-fu is failing me).

  • @blessdtxas - I'd be kind of upset with that scan. Only 15 minutes? For both transvaginal and abdominal, and a high measurement?? You'd think if they measured results that were abnormal, they'd measure it a few times and look more closely to be sure. FX for good news back on your bloodwork.

@blessdtxas - Usually you have to agree to the NT scan, but I have a friend who specifically asked not to have it done, and they still looked quickly while doing an ultrasound and then told her that there might be something wrong.  She was pissed.  And nothing was wrong.

The cell free DNA test is much more accurate than the NT scan, so hopefully you will get your results quickly.  Mine said 2 weeks, but came at exactly 1 week.  I would also talk to your doctor more about what happened.

  • I have no idea, it depends how invasive it is. Originally I wanted to do the sequential screening but the ball was dropped with my doctor's office, they didn't get back to me between the weeks in which they could have done it (I was ignorant to this at the time). So I'm actually pretty upset about that.

We will set up an appointment with a genetic counselor in the next couple weeks to explore our options and go from there. I'm under 30, no history of genetic disorders, etc. so not sure if it would be worth it to go through all of this. Need to check if insurance covers it too.

Wait, they did your NT scan at 8 weeks pregnant? I was under the impression that an NT scan can only be done at 11 weeks though 14 at most. Did they confirm you were much further along than you thought?

I would definitely call your OB and ask to speak with a nurse about that, that seems strange to me. Did they follow up or want to redo the scan, just ordered bloodwork?
  • Thanks yall. In hindsight, I'm pretty unhappy with how it was handled. I didn't even get to talk to my ob during the appt. She left to deliver as I was changing. I agreed to seeing a np before I knew my scan was abnormal. The np was so nonchalant about it and I was shocked at the news and didn't ask the right questions at the time. I called back after the appointment when I could think more clearly and got a little more info from the nurse. The heartbeat was good, 164, & there were no others abnormalities on the scan. I'll talk to my ob about my concerns on how it was handled, but I guess it doesn't matter too much at this point. Just frustrated and worried :/ in the future I will not be getting the scan. I'd rather wait until 20 weeks.

@homeydontplaythat I thought I was 8 weeks, but they dated me at 12 during the US.

  • @blessdtxas I don't blame you one bit for being shell shocked, I would have reacted the same way. I'm mad they had a nurse give a half assed explanation with no real follow up. Will be thinking about you, hope you give your OB a talking to and get the clarity you deserve.
