STM has this ever happened to you?

On Thursday morning I woke up and went pee like usual, but when I wiped there was brown blood on the toilet paper. Initially I was not worried because I know brown blood is old blood and many women spot earl in pregnancy. I put on a liner and went on with my morning. By the time I arrived At school(I'm a teacher) there were several drops of brown blood on the liner. I decided to call my dr. The nurse called me and said well if you're spotting brown it'll probably turn red and get heavy indicating a miscarriage. She said I was high risk for a miscarriage now and that I couldn't lift, have sex, exercise, etc. so naturally I was hysterical and had to go home from school. As the day went on the spotting stopped. I never had cramps or anything and the blood was brown and got darker and today it was not blood but brown discharge(tmi, yuck). So my question is has that ever happened to you in previous pregnancies and what was your outcome? It never happened when I was pregnant with DD, but that nurse hs me freaking out!

Re: STM has this ever happened to you?

  • It hasnt happened to me but ive seen many ladies post on here about it. Mostly ive read that everything turned out fine. Im sorry that she worried you and hope everything works out. Id ask to see the dr. So you can ease your worries.

  • I asked if they would let me come I. For another blood test and get an ultrasound and her response was there's nothing we can do so we just wait to see what happens. That conversation is exactly why I do not ever choose to see the midwife at that office. I feel like the Drs are more compassionate and the midwife and her nurses are insensitive. I get that they deal with this stuff everyday, but to someone who doesn't the tough love approach is just hurtful. Side note I am a big girl and can deal with insensitivity when it come to everything except my kids.
  • I had some brown spotting for a day or so only when I wiped at around 7 weeks, and it turned out just to be because we had had sex recently. Sex can break tiny blood vessels in the cervix and cause some minor spotting like that. Not sure if it's comparable at all to your situation though. I would keep in close contact with the OB/midwife. In our situation, they offered us an early ultrasound just to ensure everything was okay.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. I know it can be incredibly nerve wrecking, especially if your provider isn't providing compassionate guidance. I hope everything turns out well for you.

  • Thank you linziloo! I wish sex was the reason for the spotting, but not in our case. I threw up this morning so in hoping everything is fine. I guess I'll find out may 3 when we have an ultrasound.

Wow, that nurse was awful, and you need to report what she said to your doctor.  And yes, I have had that happen to me, and was told to keep an eye on it, and we'd see what happened.  What happened was that it stopped, and everything's fine now.  That nurse must have been having one heck of a bad day, to be that awful to a patient who's clearly worried.

  • Thank you ladies! It's putting my mind at ease knowing I'm not over reacting to how I was treated. I'm not spotting anymore and I've thrown up twice today; I'm guessing we're good to go... I hope!
  • I had spotting with my first. It's very scary but it turned out alright for me, sending you positive vibes that everything is ok. Take the doctors Advice and rest all weekend! Put your feet up let your partner spoil you and watch comedies. Do what ever you can to take your mind off the stress and let your body rest.

  • I started spotting a week ago (I'm 7 weeks) and I went to the Dr and got an ultrasound. He advised it was the umbelical cord attaching to something causing a bit of bleeding. It lasted a week on and off and was very light in flow and very dark in colour.
  • Also, especially if it's early on, it's not too late to switch providers to one you mesh better with. For our first, the OB that headed our midwifery practice left and started his own midwifery group, and we liked him much better than any of the midwives there. So we went with him during second tri. We ended up loving his group - much smaller and more personal - and we didn't have any care repercussions due to the care transition. I know when meeting with those first midwives, I kept thinking, if this is the one delivering my baby, I'm going to throat punch her (like the one that just said labor was "uncomfortable not painful"...I'd have cut that bitch). Make sure that when it comes down to ongoing care, labor, and delivery, these are the people you want in the room with you. Good luck, hun!

  • I have no advice except to say that I am appalled that nurse has employment.
  • Thanks ladies! I've Ben taking it as easy as I can with a one year old and a farmer husband. I've been doing well the past couple days. When I go in to my next appointment I am making it known that I am never to see the midwife or her nurses again. I adore both doctors in that practice but the midwife is a different story. I had no problems there with my first but if I have one more bad experience I'm switching!
