Prenatal vitamins

Which ones are you taking? Did your doc prescribe them, or did you just get OTC ones? My doc didn't mention a prescription for them, but gave me 5 different types of samples. Do I just choose one and have him write me a script for it? Sorry for the silly questions. When I was pregnant with DD 6  1/2 yrs ago, my OB gave me a script at my first visit.

  • My doc asked if I wanted a script for some on first visit, but since I've been taking Rainbow Light prenatals for a few years now, I told her I'd prefer to stick with what I have because I don't mind buying them.
I'm sure that you can just call the office and let them know you need a script. My doc's office has a specific phone line just for prescription questions.

  • Thanks ladies. I feel like a ftm all over again since it's been so long.
  • I use Nature Made Prenatal Multi + DHA. I'm allergic some food dyes and so many prenatals are dyed pink.

  • I'll second the Rainbow Light once a day kind. I've been using them since 2013 with ds1!
  • I really like Smarty Pants Prenatal Gummies. They are a bit pricey (although buying on Amazon saves money!), but I love that they have folate instead of folic acid, they have DHA, and easy to eat and digest. They don't make me nauseous or give me heartburn. I had been taking Food Lion prenatals but my tummy doesn't agree with them now.
  • Another Rainbow Light user in here! I chose them because they were really well rated on Amazon. Protip: I take my PNV's before bed so they don't turn my stomach. Maybe this is a common thing, but I discovered it on my own. Ha.

  • @PensiveCrayon that's what I do too. I also like that if I forget and take in the morning, I don't taste or belch vitamin flavor all day.
  • I also prefer the rainbow light brand over any of the Rx samples
  • I get a big bottle from Costco. They have omega threes added as well.

I received a sample of the Vita Pearl from my doctor and it was the only one that I can take on an empty stomach with no issues. They also have a program where they bill your insurance each month and auto deliver to your house. You can ask for their generic version and (at least with my insurance) it's completely free!
  • Thanks y'all! I'll pick up the Rainbow Light ones today.
  • @mamax2 I am late to the game but YES Rainbow lights! I have used them for all my pregnancies and love them.

  • I use Nature Made but at my first appt will look into getting a prescription re: @KatBH to see if I can get generic ones for free! Great tip :-) Also, I couldn't remember if I took my vitamin yesterday morning so I took it again - huge mistake!!! I've had a raging headache ever since. Apparently too many vitamins can result in a severe headache :-(

@jennbaylor12 if you go on their website there's either a phone number or a form that you can fill out. They'll call your doctor directly to get the prescription and then just bill your insurance. It's awesome!

I just use OTC women's one a day prenatal with DHA- worked well the first time  so sticking with what works!

  • I take a whole food raw prenatal along with one fermented cod liver oil pill a day!
  • I use Gummies. Nature made or target brand. Worked with my first kiddo and they don't make me sick.  I tried 5 different ones that all made me sick last time before trying the Gummies.

My doctor sent in a prescription but they were 50 bucks for a month...and that was generic (Co pay). So I'll stick with 12 bucks for 45 days. I will just have to eat more iron or supplement since they don't have any and last pregnancy I got anemic.

  • I have been taking the Women's One a Day prenatal with DHA. I usually take them immediately after I eat supper. Otherwise, that make me feel sick.

I may switch to gummi's after these run out, but for now... I like them. I have the one where the prental and HDA are 2 separate pills.

I'm finishing up a box of TheraNatal Plus, but will probably move to gummies. It's incredibly unpleasant every morning as I struggle to choke down the TheraNatal pills... a gummy sounds amazing. Glad I'm not the only one having trouble swallowing pills! Does anyone also take probiotics? I haven't added mine back in yet, waiting to meet with the doc to see what she recommends.

  • I'll second @JustBored10 on the whole foods raw Prenatal's. I used those with DD1 before I subscribed to Melaluca. Now I take their prenatal pack and it comes with a calcium and omega-3. Honestly they have done wonders for my skin and hair. Which I tend to loose most of post baby. I've been taking them for two years now.

Went to CVS today to pick up some Rainbow Lights, and they looked at me like I was crazy. The lady had no idea what I was talking about. I ended up just getting CVS brand gummy ones.
  • Yeah, @Mamax2, I've only ever been able to find Rainbow Light brand in stores once...I get them off Amazon.

  • I was taking Garden of Life Organic, but can't stomach swallowing three huge vitamins a day.  Now, I'm just taking Solgar Folate until my morning sickness evens out a bit.

  • My target carries rainbow light.  I'm not sure how the cost compared to Amazon. I might switch to the minis because choking down the giant pill is getting old.
  • Thank God for gummies. I didn't take my prenatals regularly with my 1st 2 and I really want to be consistent with them. I have been consistently taking my prenatal gummies for a few months now. I'm a kid basically.

  • Target has 50 ct of the Rainbow Light for about $13, but I have ordered 150 for about $28 on Amazon

I use Rainbow light until morning sickness hits, then I switch to the DHA gummies from whole foods.  I'm hoping baby #2 will be different and I won't be sick my entire pregnancy
  • Dont hate me guys but I take Flintstones lol.. I bought some, they made me sick, I got my dr to rx one, they made me sicker, so my dr told me to take two Flintstones a day.
  • No hate here! That's what I take. I was told only 1 tho and I take a separate folic pill. Love the Flintstones!
  • @glitter I take Flintstones too for the same reason.

  • I take a script because they are free lol last time around they made me sick, but I was also getting sick daily with my first pregnancy... We will see if the morning sickness stays away or if it will just hit me later
  • I take Nature Made with DHA plus a Vitamin D3 I take it right before bed and they haven't bothered me yet.

  • This was helpful- after reading this I bought the rainbow lights from Amazon. As far as the gummies go, all of them that I have seen do not contain iron. Has anyone found one that does?
  • @ErinRenne - I'm pretty sure the make up of the gummies prevents them from including iron.  I don't think you will find any with iron.  That's why they are easier on the stomach - the iron causes nausea and constipation (although can be important for pregnancy).
  • I am on One A Day vitamins, the pack with two different pills. The one is a massive pink pill that tastes awful, it makes me want to vomit just thinking of it. I really have to psych myself into taking it every night. But the good news is that I don't really feel any more nauseated after I take it, so whatever.
  • I take Garden of Life Vitamin Code Raw Prenatal. I usually get a 2 month supply on Amazon for around $40.. You have to take them 3 times a day but they are totally organic all raw materials. I don't have to take them with food and they don't make me nauseous. I also take Nordic Naturals Prenatal DHA. that's a 90 day supply for around $40.

  • I have been taking Green Pastures Blue Ice Royal FCLO/High vitamin butter oil daily as well as Radiant Life Dessicated Liver Capsules (6 capsules per day) in addition to my prenatal Garden of Life Raw Prenatal (which has beta-carotene as it's source of vitamin A). I am concerned that I have been taking too much Vitamin A. But then did some reading that suggested it would take a long time to get to a dangerous level. Does anyone have any thoughts?
