Sitting up question

When was your LO able to sit on their own? I'm confused by what that even means. DD is about to turn 7 months next week, but I'm not sure that she's met the sitting up milestone? She is scooting around, essentially army crawling, but I would never leave her sitting without being right next to her because she still topples backwards. When people say their LOs are sitting up do they mean just wobbling around in the upright position or independently sitting.. meaning you wouldnt have a problem turning your back or crossing the room to grab something?

Re: Sitting up question

  • DD is a pretty confident sitter at this point, I'll still only walk away if she's on her foam mats though, she still gets over confident from time to time and will topple over reaching for things

  • I wouldn't leave her on a tile or wood floor but yes I am comfy leaving her on the carpet without being there to assist her.  She doesn't topple back but occasionally will throw herself back.  But I bet with as much army crawling as your little one is doing, and working her core muscles, she will be sitting sturdier in no time!
  • Our ped said they don't sit up well enough to walk away from them until closer to 9 months. I will put lo in the middle of our king sized bed and fold clothes, but if she's on a harder surface I always make sure I can grab her if she topples.

Do you let her roll backwards without catching her? If she's in the bed I let her fall any direction because it's soft and when she's on the carpet I let her fall forward because she usually catches herself with her arms or her shoulder. But I'm totally afraid to let her roll backwards while on the carpet.
  • My guy has been sitting solidly since he turned six months. The same day he started sitting on his own he also stated climbing things and pulling himself up and standing while holding onto something. It happened in one day, he went from supporting himself with one arm while sitting to just doing it on his own. He's a big solid kid though, size of a one year old. He's got such big thighs and I think that helps him stay supported while sitting and standing.
  • Mine is not sitting solidly yet, either... he generally will topple over given a minute or two. Even sitting independently at all only started a week or two ago (at about 6.5 months).
  • My guy is sitting up yet
  • My daughter has been sitting up since a little before 6 months. She's 7.5 months now and she is a solid sitter-upper. She even scoots herself around with her legs and can move a distance. When she's on her playmat I feel comfortable walking away however I still have her boppy behind her just in case she tumbles back which she really doesn't do - just makes mommy feel better! One day when I looked she moved across her playmat and was pulling things out of her playbox!

My LO is very similar. Big baby who was in 12 month clothes at less than 6 months. He started sitting supported around 6 months and solidly without support around 7 months. He started putting himself in the sitting position at 7 months too and would lean on his one arm. A week later he wasn't using his arm to lean anymore and he stopped tipping around 7 months too. I think his size helps though ... he's a chunk and very strong for his age. He's also full-on crawling now at 7.5 months; he's an overachiever. Don't worry ... babies pick up skills very quickly and your LO will master it when she's ready! :)
  • LO started being able to sit unsupported (for short periods) at 13 weeks so he's been great at sitting for long periods for a few months now. He will sit up and play with toys without having to support himself for a good 30 minutes. im comfortable with him sitting on hardwood floors.

  • Mine is still very wobbly in the sitting position. I'm not concerned with it yet since she is just choosing not to. She straightens right up when I try to put her in a sitting position. And she really prefers to be on her tummy since she can crawl. We are working on it but babies develop at their own rate. Milestones are general.
  • My guy is pretty small and he's not a good sitter yet either. He can stay up for a bit by himself but will topple eventually, and doesn't pull himself up. I won't leave him out of arms reach, but I will let him fall on soft surfaces so he can try to figure it out. Not too worried, gives me more time before I have to worry about him wreaking havoc about the house!
  • Mine just turned 7 months old on the 11th and JUST a week ago started sitting for a long period. I was shocked because on Monday he toppled over and On Thursday, he just sat there for 30 minutes until we had to get up. I don't really leave him alone because we have hardwood floors and afraid he will bang his head.
  • 7.5 months here, only sitting up without help in short spurts! I'm ready for him to be able to sit up and play. He is long and has a big head, 90% in both, so his doctor said he might be slow to sit up without assistance. He does good until he bring something to his mouth to chew on, or looks around and  he falls over. I still line the area with pillows so he doesn't hit his head.
  • Ds is almost 8 months at this point and he can sit up pretty well on his own.  He like others does occasionally throw himself back but not frequently.   He also is army crawling everywhere.   He also has recently started pulling himself up on things.  He is also a big boy, I don't know if that makes a difference.

  • 7 months old and can sit up for a few minutes but then gets lazy and falls back on bed
  • DS2 could sit wobbly by 6 months but couldn't regain his balance until probably 7 months.  At 8 months he can get to a sit from crawling and standing by himself and can easily play with toys and reach for things without falling over. Oddly enough, he prefers to sit in a "Z sit" position rather than the standard baby sit.
  • She started at 6.5 months and after 3 weeks is a pro.  She sits in her pack and play for 20 minutes, just playing.  I don't put her on the floor but I'm sure they do at school.

  • I think it just means being able to support themselves in a sitting position for an extended period of time (doesn't necessarily mean they won't sometimes still topple over) LO has been sitting unassisted for a few months now. He's crawling and pulling up, he's just gotten to where he can pull himself to a standing position on his own. He will still occasionally fall backwards while sitting up.. No clue why but it happens. I just let him if he's on carpet. It's gonna happen sometimes and it's a short fall so I really don't see the harm. I'm verrrry apprehensive when he is sitting on tile/hard floors, though.

  • Almost 8 months here and DD2 cause sit up well independently. She can sit up from a crawling belly position and only topples when she tries to stand and walk along furniture. I feel comfortable with her on any surface. She started sitting at 5.5 months and could sit for a few minutes at a time by 6 months. She is an overachiever though. She is starting to try to "stand alone and walk" cause she wants to go after her big sister.
