Re: Thoughts on Adler?

  • It's a surname and I think of "addled"

  • Yeah definitely the surname trend. I wouldnt use it, but it could be worse.

  • My immediate thought was "addled" as well.
  • I thought of Irene Adler from Sherlock Holmes. I don't hate it, though. Maybe Archer or Adrian instead?

I thought this too, lol. It's too surnamey IMO but I guess that's more of a not my style than a side-eye.
  • My favorite show is Will & Grace and her name is Grace Adler. So to me it's a surname and weird to use as a first (unless it's like your mom's maiden name).
  • Yeah, I agree that it's just nms. I think it fits your sibset well and I don't really mind it as a fn.
  • I think the name is absolutely usable! In fact I think it's quite strong and even though it's unique I don't see it causing any spelling problems.

The first association that came to my mind is that I think it means 'eagle' in German. Personally, I wouldn't mind this association.

If you like it, go for it!

  • Suggesting Alden

  • Names ending with an "n" are tricky because our LN is H#lland.  and the -n -nd sorta bugs me.  It's not a total deal killer, but not my fave either.  Other options include:

    Asher
    Ansel
    Wes

Slight preference for names with Germanic origin.  My late father was from Germany and half my family is there.  Dad was Wolfgang Frederich.  (Wolfgang is a BIG name to give a kid as a first name, but it's in play for a middle name. So is Frederich)

  • My fave from your list is Ansel
  • My $.02: Wolfgang ist ausgezeichnet! I would 100% use this and have it on my short list.
  • German names!

    Benedict/Benedikt
    Bertram
    Conrad
    Edmund
    Emmerich
    Felix
    Fritz
    Isidor
    Johannes
    Kaspar
    Leopold
    Lukas
    Marcel
    Marius
    Matthias
    Otto
    Reiner
    Roland
    Tobias
    Walter
    Wilhelm
    Wolfram
  • Not gonna lie love Wolfgang. If I had heritage I would have it on my list. I also really like Ivan and Ansel. I like Niko and Wes but more as nn vs given

  • Agree on Wes and Niko - they'd probably be short for Wesley / Dominik

    Two more fantastic names!

  • My DS (one week old) is Dietrich.  :) We also had Friedrich as a close contender.
  • I kind of like it. Never heard it before.
  • Don't like it, nms
  • I can't decide if I like it or not, I haven't heard it enough to be sure. I do think it goes well with your sibset though!
  • I love it and it's German!! Definitely use it!!!
  • I keep thinking Adlai (Stevenson)
  • I love Dominik/nn Niko. Adler is fine, just yet another entry in the blah surname-as-first-name trend. Also, had a terrible/crazy boss with this surname, we called him the Madler.
  • I really like Adler and think it matches your other kids nicely. It seems kind of earthy to me and I love the German meaning if going with a German name is important to you.
