Cloth diapers

Re: Cloth diapers

  • We have a fifteen month old, and have been cloth diapering her in BumGenius 4.0s and Rumparooz pocket diapers. It's been remarkably easy! We love Charlie Soap for CD and use it for all our laundry now.

  • I will CD #2.  I am still CDing #1 (22 months).  We wash about every 3-4 days.  I have a huge stash, so I have no reason NOT to CD. ;)

  • After talking to DH about it, we've decided to CD at home and then use disposables when we're out and about. I think that's a good compromise, and of course DH loves the idea of saving money! ;] This thread has been a great resource.
  • I very much want to with this one. Gotta make sure DH is on board first. He's grossed out by the idea of poop in the washing machine, despite how many times I tell him you rinse it off in the toilet first with a sprayer. We put blowout onesies in there too and he doesn't say anything. Men...

  • This is one of the charts that helped us decide to go with CD. Pinterest has several that are very helpful and informative!
As someone who kept a spreadsheet for all my diaper and wipe expenses the last 2 years, I can say this is way overblown for disposables. The first year we used about half of what's listed and the second year (well, 11 months) we have used less than 1/3rd that number. DD never got left in wet or dirty diapers either...maybe we were just lucky...but the point of these charts is (in my opinion) to scare ppl away from disposable and to sell cloth.

With that said, we may have saved money by cloth diapering...but our daycare doesn't allow them so we would have had both expenses so it wasn't worth it to make the investment.

I do think cloth diapers are cute though...just not my thing. My husband would have killed me if we went that route as he has changed 80% of them since DD was 4 months old! (I'm a lucky gal...but she's such a daddy's girl I'm not allowed to change them)
    DD1 5/23/14, DD2 12/5/16   Baby #3 on the way!

  • FWIW that chart also ahows a much higher cost than we've paid for CDs -
we got 8 bum genius 4.0s from our registry and a couple covers and 30 pre folds from eBay for $70. So we've paid 70 for CDs and have supplemented with probably 10 $9 packs of disposables this first year

  • I will absolutely be cloth diapering my LO.  I currently CD my 9 mo DD, and love it.  I could go on and on with how great it is, but I'll spare you guys.  Let's just say I'm excited to put cloth on a newborn again, and would love to help anyone who needs advice or has questions on the subject.
  • Those of you who have done cloth diapers - do your day cares allow them?  I'm fearful that day care will say no, and then it will be wasted money because you'd have to buy disposables anyway.
  • @DumbledoresArmy my daycare doesn't allow them, but they provide the diapers for when L is there. So I have a pack of disposables at home and he gets changed into one in the morning, then any time other than that he would wear his cloth(if he didn't pee out)

  • @DumbledoresArmy  - I send her to an in-home daycare, and I actually met her on a local CD swap page.  It was definitely something I worried about early on as well.  Even if you don't CD full time, it will save you some money.

  • @DumbledoresArmy - the daycare we used since he was 10wks old did allow it. We were switching to one closer to home who said they didn't allow it and when questioned as to why attempted to say that licensing agencies in Texas didn't permit it for sanitary reasons. That just is not the case and, when they reviewed the stipulations, agreed that it was permitted with an appropriate place to put spoiled diapers to be provided by the parents. Education was provided to staff and no more problems!! I def encourage questioning the reason a facility may say no - it may be able to be changed!

  • I've been speaking to DH about cloth diapering and he seems a little overwhelmed by the whole process. I'm definitely one to save money and we plan to have at least one more child if not two more. So the cost we would save with them will help as well.

Mine did, it was an at-home daycare.  She wasn't real thrilled at first, her husband is older and had told her stories about the old napkins and plastic pants horror stories.  When I showed her the diapers I'd bought for her to use, though, she was on board.  Before you look for a daycare, check into the regs in your state.  That way, if they claim that state regulations won't allow it, you can gently correct them and say no, they're allowed by the state, you just need to do X.  Usually it's not a problem after that, particularly if the diapers are included in the price so they get to save money!

  • Probably irrelevant to most but if you are using a military daycare the regulations can differ from state regs.

  • I CD with my first,  I think I will try again with our next. I didn't use any new born cloth diapers because they grow out of them in the first month. So we just did disposable until LO reached 10lbs and used Bumgenius. Love them and they hold up wonderfully.
  • I CD, it's definitely saved us a ton of money. I might have to replace a few things for baby #4, but I've been using the same diapers for 4 years straight. 3 of those years with at least 2 in diapers. It's definitely not for everyone!

I had a really small baby and pretty much no newborn size when I started, but my kid was so tiny that I went out adn got some Lil Joeys.  Best thing ever.  Used them until she was 3 months.

  • Those of you first time moms who are thinking about using cloth diapers. If you are blessed with someone throwing you a baby shower, make sure to add a diaper sprayer and cloth diapers or serivice gift certificates to your registry! It's a great gift and will save you a lot in the long run!
