I just don't understand giving children "big" names like Arist.otle and Socr.ates. It's just a lot that no person given those names will probably ever live up to. I think that's my problem with that kind of name...
Ima Hogg was really the name of the daughter of a Texas governor. Very wealthy philanthropist, well-known collector of famous artwork, but preferred for her stationary to say "Miss Hogg". Unfortunately for her name, she never married.
I really don't like this new trend of traditionally boys names being given to girls. It irritates me to no end. You wouldn't name your son Amanda or Julia or something! For some reason the fact that it doesn't go both ways is what gets me most of all.
It's not a new trend. Stacy, Kelly, Leslie, Evelyn (among others!) all traditionally male names. I had a boss named Stacy (male) in his fifties.
You're blowing my mind a little bit. I knew about Leslie, but flippin EVELYN used to be a male name?! Dayum.
Courtney was a popular boy's name, too. I've known 3, one was an older guy and the other two went by Cory and CJ.
Pippin for a girl? I mean, it's cute but the first time I heard it I blurted out that that's my dog's name. Because I named him after a hobbit. I'm not sure where else it would come from. But I've heard it a couple times now so I guess it's getting popular.

Just got a new one. Someone on my friends list named their daughter Aftyn Green (Green being her middle name not her last name). I did a google search just to make sure I wasn't being a judgey troll and no, Aftyn is not a real name (at least not on the baby name boards that I looked at).

In any case, Misha is a Russian diminutive of Mikhail. So it is entirely masculine, regardless of how rigid ones view of masculinity is.
I understand that Misha is Russian diminutive of Mikhail. However, the soft A is too feminine for my taste and Misha tends to be a girls name where we live.
H and I really like the name Mikhail (pronounced mee-khah-EEL (Russian)), but neither of us are Russian and we live in rural USA. Plus, our kid will be half-Asian... I just don't think it's going to fit. It's kind of off the wall that we like it because we tend toward traditional/Biblical names (Jacob, Aaron, James, etc).
@kns1988 LOL!!! I always wanted to give my kid a distinct Russian name (because I'm russian), but my husband is Asian and Asian dna is pretty strong so our kid won't look very russian at all. If we have a girl, I do want to name her Alexandra and call her Sasha for short but DH is being snobby about it lol.

I just realized a GF spelled her son's name K.o.l.l.i.n. Like that's not going to be annoying for him at all growing up to correct people on the spelling.
My grandma tried to get my mom to spell my ***ley name with a speshul ***lee ending. I have two girl cousins on that side (born before me) with the horrific **lee spellings of their names. I'm so happy my mom stood her ground. Standard spelling FTW!
My name has a speshul spelling My mom spelled it the way it is to incorporate her and my grandmother's middle name...so I guess at least there's a reason other than trying to be youneek, but still.

My name has a 'speechul' spelling and I hate it. I haven't used my legal name socially since I was 6 and people are often surprised to learn it when it does come up. I'm planning to legally change it this year because I HATE my name.

@ShallowSeas at least she had a reason for the spelling! My grandma has no reason for wanting my name to be spelled differently except to be youneek.
@KilgraveMadeMeDoIt I'm sorry you hate your name. If you're serious about changing it, definitely do it before you finish your degree and have to get any additional licenses! Have you taken boards yet? Would it make sense to change before those big exams come up too? (I can't remember the timeline for boards etc) But I'm sure you're on top of all that.
@missameliapond We don't do any major licensing testing until after graduation, so I have a couple years (I graduate in 2018) and everyone knows me by my usual name instead of my legal name so that's what my letters all say at this point. Bit different than in the states where they do Step 1 after preclerkship. I'll be submitting the application for my name change this summer.

You do step 1 after second year of medical school, step 2 after third year. Step 3 after graduation. Change your name before step one. Definitely before graduation.

I am ***lie and it was annoying that I couldn't buy all of that personalized bullshit in the 90s but it's not so bad now. Especially since everyone my age has my name (mostly spelled ***ley)

I know when step 1, 2, and 3 are taken since I have many classmates planning to take them but I'm in Canada. We don't write the USMLEs unless we intend to pursue postgrad training in the U.S. I won't be writing them so I don't have major licensing exams until after graduation which means I have plenty of time.

I went to high school with a girl named Billie Jo Seamon. No one called her Billie Jo. Everyone called her BJ...bad enough right? Yeah, add Seamon to the end and it's a real winner.
WTF were her parents thinking?????
Funny story - one of my close friends had her name legally changed when she was 9. Her parents named her Bobby Jo, and kids started calling her BJ. Her mom immediately got her name changed and let her pick out her own first name. lol.
I've known plenty of BJs (hey ohhh!!), both men and women, and it is only an issue for a minute. It was the combo with the last name that made this one pretty bad. People with bad last names (like Seamon) need to be extra careful, right? Like I went to high school with the Moorehead family. Their dad's name was Richard. And he went by Dick. I mean, this was his fault, because he chose to go by Dick instead of like Rick or Rich, but still. Say your last name is Spitz....You can't name your kid anything that can become BJ. There really should be laws.
I just realized a GF spelled her son's name K.o.l.l.i.n. Like that's not going to be annoying for him at all growing up to correct people on the spelling.
And her name is spelled A.i.m.e.e.! She should know better!
That's how I spell my name! Aim.ee, not Ko.llin, lol.
I know someone who named her twins Luk.asey and La.ela. Besides that fact that I'm fairly certain she misspelled a brand name for cowboy boots (they fancy themselves as cowboys), I just feel like she named her twins Lu.ke & Le.ia and literally doesn't realize it.
