Long version:
Tuesday, April 12th my contractions started
picking up about an hour and a half before my next dose of Procardia (med to
help with contractions). I’d take the dose and they’d slow down and I’d
get really crampy. Same thing on Wednesday
so I called in and we decided to increase the frequency of Procardia and I’d go
in Thursday morning for my regular appointment.
Went in Thursday and my cervix had shortened to 1.6 (or 1.3
when Baby A was pushing on it). I was also
dilated 1 cm. The doctor could tell I
was in more pain and there was more activity going on so he sent me over to the
hospital to see what the contractions were doing. Got hooked up and was definitely contracting
too much. So we tried doing Indocin which
had worked for me in the past to slow things down. However, my contractions only increased. So the next step was starting magnesium which
usually stops labor but can have some bad side effects. I did feel a bit sluggish and tired but felt
that way before, too. They checked
dilation a few times and I was getting more dilated - about another centimeter
every 2 hours and thinning out a bit, too. The magnesium wasn’t slowing things down
either. It looked more and more like it
was becoming a matter of when delivery would be and not an if.
Waited another hour or so and I had progressed 3.5-4 cm dilated and 60%
effaced. So we talked with the peri
doctor and we all agreed it was time for a c section. The labor clearly wasn’t stopping and at some
point it was getting riskier for the triplets as they couldn’t really be
monitored to see how they were handling labor.
After that decision was made at 9:15 pm, it was go time. H and I both started getting prepped for
the c section. I started getting more
nervous as it all became more real.
After we were prepped, we headed down to the operating room. It was very bright and seemed chaotic with
people running around getting ready. It
was also kind of loud with all the machines and people (at least 16). It was rather overwhelming. I was also really shaky which made me
nervous. I got the spinal tap right away
which wasn’t as bad as I anticipated.
They laid me down and started more preparations. They had most of the people in the operating
room and a bed for Baby C. Baby A and
Baby B went to an adjoining room. Once
they got going, it all went really fast.
Baby A came at 10:45 then B at 10:46 and then C at 10:48. They part after didn’t take as long as I
thought it would. Not sure how long it
was. H took pictures and was able to
see all the babies. I got a brief look
at Baby C whose bed wasn’t far from my head.
They stopped by with A and B in their beds on their way up to NICU but I
couldn’t see much.
After they were done with me, I went to an op recovery room for an hour or so
while H went up with the babies to the NICU. They monitored my bleeding since I had lost
more blood during the c section than the average delivery. Most likely that was just because there were
three babies so more blood flow going on.
Then H came back to check on me.
After a bit, we went up to my recovery room which a quick stop at the
NICU to see the babies. Then we settled
in and tried to get some sleep between the meds and uterus palpation which were
every 15 minutes, then 30 minutes, then every hour.
