Car seat question

Looks like my preemie is going to be discharged from the NICU within the next week. Yay!

Having been hospitalized for the last three months, I didn't have any opportunity to do all the important shopping for the baby. As such, I'm now scrambling to get it all done and am basically getting a crash course on all things baby.

I have a question about car seats I would love your opinions on.

I don't drive, so I will be wearing my baby or taking him out in his stroller (either walking or via public transit). This means I will also take my fair share of cabs.

I had been looking for a stroller with a car seat attached so I could take him out in the stroller be potentially cab home if I got tired. However one of the NICU moms mentioned that it's no longer advisable to have a baby in the car seat for very long as they are too scrunched up. This makes sense but how long is 'too long'?

I will get a bassinet attachment for long walks if needed but if I take the stroller out without the car seat it means I would be unable to cab back home. I intend to ask the sales people in the shops when I go to get one but thought I would ask here first. Has anyone done research on this?

Thanks so much!!

Really, if the buckles are positioned correctly, and the installed angle is correct, baby won't be scrunched. It's just not advisable to have baby sleeping in the carseat, particularly unattended/on the floor/etc., because their chin can roll forward and restrict breathing if the angle is off. You'd be fine for walks and cab rides!

  • I am going to totally sound like a sales person here (I swear I'm not!) and recommend the "Doona". I just got mine in last week and can't wait to use it. It's a car seat that transforms into a stroller--all in one, so you don't have to have both or lug anything around! Supposedly it's great for travel and cabs, too.
  • Thank you both! I will google the Doona right away.
  • I think the too long in a car seat issue is particularly complicated with preemies because they don't have the same neck strength and are at risk of their head rolling forward and cutting off the windpipe. When you guys get released they may have your baby do a car seat challenge to see if he can keep his head up for i believe an hour? Other NICU moms will probs have more reliable info on that. If he doesn't pass, you may have to borrow one of the weird preemie car seats from the hospital- it looks like you're strapping your baby into a kitty litter box and it keeps the baby in a laying down position.

Once he's strong enough to be in a regular car seat, a few hours shouldn't be any big deal, I think they just don't want you to have them sleeping in it all night because of positional plagioencephaly. I used the Chicco Keyfit with the snap and go and absolutely loved it- it's super easy to buckle into a car which was great for cabs, and the snap & go was very lightweight and had a lot of cargo room underneath. I traveled quite a bit alone with my son and never struggled with that duo on public transportation or cabs.
  • We have the Urbini Avi system. It does come with a preemie insert for the car seat. I like it because it's lightweight and the stroller folds up with one hand. Added bonus is it's inexpensive.
  • Thank you for answering. @bellodomani he does need to do a car seat challenge test before leaving.
  • My understanding is that the angle the car seat sits in the car or latched onto the stroller is more reclined than when the car seat is on its own (like just sitting on the floor) and that when the issues arise.

I am not sure where you're located, but the Cybex Aton Cloud Q (not available in the US until late May) is a car seat with a recline that can be used when not in the car. It may provide a good option for you!
  • @mommaluey I am in Canada but will google it. Thank you!
