Planned CSection/Induction

Sorry for the double post (in April BMB).
Holy $#!+ guess what!!! I went for my high risk appointment today (37+3), and due to high blood pressure and excessive protein levels, I was informed that I'm having a baby this upcoming Monday! I come in at 6:00 AM for an ultrasound. If LO is still breech, they'll proceed with a c-section. If he's flipped, they'll induce labor with pitocin and whatever else (fx)! ANYWAYS, if you've had experience with either, could you tell me how your morning/day went? What process and procedures did you go through?

Re: Planned CSection/Induction

  • Wow, Monday!? That would make my head spin! I've had both an induction and a planned csection.
I went in at 7 am for the induction (2nd baby), and they inserted cervadil to ripen and soften the cervix. I began having contractions on my own, but they pretty quickly added pitocin (ouch!). I was able to walk around and change positions for a few hours until they wanted to monitor baby, then I was stuck in bed. I progressed slowly from 7 am-3 pm, only getting to barely 3 cm. At that point I figured I'd be there for awhile so I asked for an epidural (which instantly stopped all pain). Epidural at 3:30 and I shot right up to 10 cm by 5:00! 20 min of pushing and baby was born! It was the easiest labor experience I've had.
The planned csection was baby #3, as she wasn't positioned right. They brought me into the ice cold operating room and I had to sit all alone on the table for 10 excruciating minutes. I was so nervous and felt really alone :( One of the nurses brought me a heated blanket and I instantly felt better. They let DH in the room which helped more. The anesthesiologist did the spinal, which was a big pinch in my back. Whatever he gave me made my blood pressure instantly skyrocket. He gave me something quickly to bring it down, and brought it too low. I threw up and felt HORRIBLE! I truly thought I would pass out and miss the birth. I was numb up to my face, which also felt weird. The Drs began before I even realized, and within 10 min and some tugging sensations, I heard my daughter cry for the first time! After they cleaned her up, they brought her to me and plopped her on me. I could not feel my arms so I was terrified of either dropping her or squeezing her too hard. It kind of ruined the moment for me! Plus I still felt super woozy and out of it.
I went to recovery where I wasn't in pain, but threw up all day (with nothing in my stomach!) and felt horrible. I felt so bad I did not even care about my daughter! It was a sad 1st day for me. Recovery was really rough the next few days especially, as I had some complications. And it took months to fully recover.
I hope you have a wonderful birth experience, whichever way your baby is born! Either way is worth it if baby arrives safely to you!

  • I am also in the same situation for Saturday morning. After hearing this I'm going to try and flip my breech girl! Nervous!!!!!
  • @jenbrinson07 I've been doing the ironing board method, but it doesn't seem to be helping! Good luck to you flipping yours! I'm hoping I'll just wake up one morning to him being head down..
  • Yeah, mine has been breech, than transverse, than head down, now breech again. (Weekly ultra sounds) Thinking I will go with the flow. She is super small under 5 pounds, so maybe just too much room and too many options for her, lol!
  • I had scheduled inductions with my first two. With #1, I started on pitocin right away since I was already at 3 cm. contractions were regular for me and manageable until the dr broke my waters, within 15 min I requested an epidural. Was able to take a nap for an hour after that and dialated from 5 to 10 and pushed for about an hour. #2 was similar but I started with a foley bulb being inserted since I was barely dialated (Wasn't painful but felt super weird) that took me to 4 cm and started the pit.

I know a lot of people say that pitocin is the devil but I seem to handle it well. They didn't have to have tto dose increased much but I have never labored naturally to make a good comparison. I actually had worse effects from the fentonal I tried for pain prior to the epidural (lots of dizziness and nausea and the reason for my nap with #1) and the magnesium for high BP after #2 (it's just made me feel icky)

    Good luck on Monday!!!
  • I was induced due to preeclampsia, had the Foley inserted around 1am and it felt like the worst cramps I've ever had, they gave me morphine to help with the pain, started potocin around 1pm the next day and got the epidural soon after, only worked on half my body,  by 10am the next day I was only 3.5 dilated but contractions were coming every 30sec and I was feeling everything,  they redid the epidural and used fentanyl which worked for about 20min then I was back to horrible pain, by 1pm I was only 5cm so they decided to do a c section and since my body did not take to the epidural I had to be completely put under, delivered around 3pm and spent 4 days in the hospital,  started to feel like myself again after about 10days. It was rough but once they are in your arms you feel no pain. Good luck with everything! !!
  • I was induced at 40w2d. Within a half hour of getting the hospital the doc broke my water and they started pitocin. I am in the camp that pitocin is the devil, as they just kept upping it and it literally gives your body ZERO break between contractions. In my case, I asked for the epi too soon and it had worn off by the time I started pushing (around 5:30pm). Because she was so large, we ended up getting an emergency c-sec and I was so thankful for it. I literally got to the point where I was asking my husband, "what if I can't do this?!" in my 30 secs between contractions. I don't mean to scare you, but I'm glad to hear that others had better experiences with their inductions. I think my situation was different since my daughter ended up being over 10lbs and just wasn't progressing that likely a normal sized baby would have.

This time I'm having a repeat scheduled c-sec, and I'm pretty happy about that choice. Good luck to you!

  • I've had 2 scheduled csections. Each time was easy and very routine. Show up, change to a gown, IV placed then waited a bit. My first time, had the spinal and was numb everywhere...very unusual feeling. Just remember to breathe!!!! You may feel like you can't. In recovery, I nursed for awhile then they cleaned me up better to go to a regular room. They gave me IV fentanyl, which is very short acting. They rolled me side to side and it was uncomfortable. It took a while to move my legs again.
For the second, my spinal was much less intense. I could move my arms freely. It was a different experience! I was able to move my legs quicker, etc. Again, I was given IV fentanyl and cleaned up. I recovered better overall for #2.

I had a planned C-section with DD. Went in at 6am for the prep work stuff for an 8am scheduled section but an emergency case came in so we waited for an extra 2 hours in the pre-op/ recovery area. When it was finally my turn they rolled me to the operating room where the nurse held me hunched forward so they could do the spinal block. They laid me back down and my blood pressure dropped. I felt like I was going to puke but never did just had that sensation. This is when they put in the catheter and leg compression things on me. My OB was actually holding my hand this whole time and the puke bucket for me and I kept thinking "shouldn't you be doing something more important to get things prepped??"  Once my husband was allowed in he sat by my head and did the hand holding etc. They put up the curtain and started. I didn't feel anything really and at times I kind of wanted to go to sleep but my husband kept talking to me telling me to stay awake. Oh they also put warm blankets on my chest which felt very heavy at times almost suffocating. After a few minutes of all that they said baby's coming and then announced its a girl! We were team green so then the tears started. They wiped her off wrapped her up and gave her to DH, took pics for us, we said her name, they took her back to do apgar tests, kicked DH out and they put me back together. I had been adament about wanting to do skin to skin so they put her on my chest before wheeling me back to recovery where DH was waiting with my mom. I BFed there and hung out there until my room was ready in maternity ward.

  • I recommend you start taking colace now, that will help after your surgery. Also I have had 2 c sections and it makes me very nauseous. I ask for something to prevent that, it goes behind your ear and really helps.

@HullGut it's called "transderm-scope" it's a patch with scopolamine in it that helps with nausea and motion sickness. Just a fair warning, when you put it on there is an initial "loading dose" that can make you feel really drunk until your body gets used to it. I work in a pharmacy and I got them for a cruise I went on. My pharmacist had used them for the same reason and warned me to put it on the night before we flew out. I'm glad I did because my husband said I acted like I was trashed and there was no way that would have been good while they're trying to explain the life boats.

  • Also, cleanse with hibicleanse before the planned CS, focusing on areas like groin, armpits, bum, and especially belly (super important if you have a CS "shelf" like me from a previous CS that creates a crease). It helps to reduce post-op skin infections.

Some hospitals will give you a specific soap to use. Mine provides a bar that you have to fully use over three showers (morning & night of day before CS and morning of it). They also require that you wash your bedding and towels using special scent free formula, and NO deodorant!
  • How long did the nasea last?
  • Hope all went well <3
