I have a more general question. How do people feel about a child going by their first and middle names all together? I know someone whose daughter is Gracie Belle. Both names are short and flow together IMO. We are considering something similar, but it is pretty uncommon here in the Midwest for a person to use both first and middle in everyday use. (I don't want to give our actual name because we aren't telling anyone and I am paranoid someone I know could see this.)
@whataboutscience I've have never met anyone that goes by their first and middle name. I imagine they would really have to feel like one name or it would be cumbersome for daily use
In the part of the south that I am from, it's common to go by two names, but they always sound so redneck. "Nora Jean" "Donna Mae" "Mary Jeanne" "Suanna" (technically one name on that last one, but come on) "J. R." "Terri Lynn" These are actual people I know.
I think dual names are acceptable, but you'd need to be careful about how it sounds. I know an "Anna-Lynn" and that one doesn't sound bad to me.
I live in the Midwest as well, and it seems decently common around here... I know personally, in my family, a lot of the kids go by both (then again our family is southern lol). 2 of my niece's names are Dixie (Jane), and Anni (Kay), they have went by both names since they were born and I can't imagine anything else. I think if you do it from the beginning, people are so used to it that they don't really even notice.
@whataboutscience I don't mind going by first and middle names, but I'd make sure you like the first name by itself enough. Most likely, people that aren't directly introduced to them as "blank blank" will just call them their first name unless the child corrects them.
@whataboutscience - I have a coworker that goes by first and middle; it's never been an issue around the office. However, I think people that don't know her call her by only her first name. I will say, both names together are 3 syllables which makes it easier and not a mouthful to say.
My husbands entire family calls him John Michael. He hated that. He introduced himself in high school as John so he will forever have one name to me and my family. I find it awkward. Middle name use where I'm from is usually scolding related !

This. If you use the kids middle name in everyday talk, how will they know they done goofed?
Adonis. It's too much right? DH is Greek and it's the only name so far we both like but we feel like it's a bad idea. Open to other ideas. It doesn't have to be greek but those are the names we tend to agree on.
I like the idea of going with a Greek name, especially if your husband is proud of his heritage/ethnic background. My family is Lithuanian and I looked back at a lot of old family names for inspiration. My husband felt a lot of them were too weird, but I love them. Adinos is a name that comes from Greek mythology meaning handsome etc. so I'm assuming you're looking at boys names? Correct me if I'm wrong. Here are some other thoughts: Ander/Anders meaning manly, Evander meaning good man (could go by Evan), Galen meaning calm/peaceful, Luca/Lucian/Lukas, Nicolai meaning people's triumph (could go by Nick). Those are the best ones I could think of. I wouldn't go with one that's popular from Greek mythology - he may be in a mythology class and feel weird one day who knows, plus they are a little out there and may be associated with a story you might not even like too much (I know this because I've studied it).
@whataboutscience We were watching Friday Night Lights the other night, and joked about naming our kid Gracie Belle, like the youngest daughter of Tammy and Eric Taylor on the show. I would never do it though. I think that it really depends on what area you are in. If I was more in the midwest, I wouldn't be phased by someone going by their first/middle name and know several children in that area of the US, that do. But in my area (PNW), it would be odd, since it isn't common to do around here.
@whataboutscience I know a lot of adults and kids that go by their first and middle names. It depends on the names, but generally I like it. Our girl name was/is Barbara Louise and my plan was to nickname her Bobbie Lou. Which I think is fucking adorable.
My husband and I are deciding on some names for our baby girl and are currently liking Nellie (his great-great grandfather was Nelson - a famous ship captain and he is in the Coast Guard so we love the family connection), Josephine (Jo is my favorite Little Woman), and Zoey (no clear reason, just like it!) Middle name will most likely be Winslow or Lynne (both family)

Love Nellie and Josephine!!!!! Zoey is okay but a far distant third with the first two as contenders! I'd most likely go with Nellie Winslow since Lynne makes it seem like all one name and Josephine Lynne is equally beautiful.
@nolabwinslowI love both Nellie and Josephine, but I love the family connection for Nellie. I agree with the name combinations @PinkLady2015 suggested.
Nellie is very cute! And it's a name you don't hear that often, which makes it even better in my book. I'm always a sucker for a name with deeper meaning and a connection to family. She'll grow up knowing her name is so special. At least that's how I feel knowing who I was named after. Out of all the combinations I think Nellie Winslow is my favorite @nolabwinslow
@nolabwinslow I love Josephine. She is also my favorite from Little Women. On the literary tip, when I hear Nellie all I think is Nellie Olsen from Little House on the Prarie. For me, that's not a positive association. But I think it's probably silly to disregard a beautiful nod to family because of this association.
I like both @Lindsayleigh1989 but also think I'd want to consider them with whatever middle name you'd have in mind. I'm a sucker for a good flow between the two, even though most people never use/say their first and middle name together
@nolabwinslow I like Nellie & Josephine - Nellie for the family connection but Josephine for possible nicknames (Jo, Joey, Jo-Jo are all cute!)
As for middle names, I agree that Nellie Winslow sounds best, since Nellie Lynne sounds a little too southern and I'm not sure if that's what you are going for. Josephine could go with either I think!
@nolabwinslow I like Nellie, although my first thought was also of Nellie Olsen and how she's such a twit, but I still really like the name! Definitely my favorite of the two.
@Lindsayleigh1989 on their own I'd say I prefer Lillian, but I agree with @jlmartinez517 that the middle name could make me go either way!
@Lindsayleigh1989 I absolutely adore Lilliana! I think it sounds more complete and feminine (although I love both). It was actually a contender before we found out we weren't having a girl.
@nolabwinslow I love Nellie Winslow! I love family connections to names. I immediately think of Nellie McClung, who was a women's suffragette in Canada
@lindsayleigh1989 Both names are beautiful but I think I lean towards Lilliana. The middle name would probably be the tie breaker for me
@Lindsayleigh1989 Lillian Leigh sounds like Vivian Leigh to me. I love Scarlett so that gets my vote. Liliana is less common I think and is a beautiful name. I don't like it as much paired with Leigh. Not sure why but my random $.02
@Lindsayleigh1989 I love Lilliana Joy! I've only ever heard it pronounced Lilly-Ahna and it is just beautiful. I work around kids and Lillian is kind of huge right now, so that "a" at the end makes it stand out a bit more.
Love Lilliana Joy @Lindsayleigh1989! I had the correct pronunciation in my head, but like @LDSJM123 said you (and she) may have to correct people. That's the only "issue" I can think of.
I love Liliana Leigh @Lindsayleigh1989 I see your middle name is Leigh and I think it would be cute if your daughter shared that. My mother's middle name is Lee and so I got the middle name Lee too. I always loved that we shared that.

I love Nellie! A friend of mine has a daughter named Nelli (she was named after her grandmother who passed away), and I have always had a soft spot for it. Second, I like Josephine. I am not a fan of Zoey, but that is because I know SO MANY of them (and because I hate the Zoey spelling and prefer the Zoe spelling).
Hi ladies. We had decided on the name Nora Cynthia last name rhymes with Cobin. Told my mom the other night and she wondered if it didn't work because there's two syllables in the first and last names. Is this a thing? A rule? Looking for any opinions on the name. Thanks!!

It also usually comes across kinda hillbillyish.

I hope you guys find a name you can agree on!
very open to thoughts
