Songs for Baby

Re: Songs for Baby

  • There are some really good suggestions here!!! Might I add - brahms lullaby. The mobile above my crib used to play this when I was a baby and I've decided to lean the words and sing it to my son at bed time.

  • @mslan I was thinking Edelweiss, too!!!!!

With my first I sang a lot of the ABC's in lullaby format because I was just at a loss for anything else and that was the easy thing that came to mind.  That and the song from Lady and Tramp when the mom sings to her baby.
Then I just made songs up.
I still make songs up for my toddler as those are the most requested and loved.
Now that I am into toddler hood I have some better songs as we listen to a lot of toddler music.
  • I can't sing at all, but I'm always playing music.l and we went to music class weekly for the first year. DS1 loved Ed Sheeran and I'm not a Jason Derulo fan, but the song with trumpets that he has always made DS1 super happy, but if I recall the lyrics aren't kid appropriate.

My song with my mom was Somewhere Over the Rainbow, I can't listen to it without sobbing now. But maybe I'll try with DS2 to continue a tradition.
  • I started out writing a poem for munchkin but I changed it to a song instead after i started humming a melody that fit, so I guess that's what I sing to her the most. She also likes classic rock so my job is pretty much done on the music front. Now I just need to get her away from wiggling to every Justin Bieber song that plays on the radio!

Singing to baby is one of the smaller things I'm looking forward to the most!

     - Beatles.  So many Beatles songs.
     - When You Dream by BNL
     - We sang a lot of songs in my French class in high school... some traditional, some translations of more modern songs (which also includes the Beatles :p and... the Gilligan's Island theme song).  I am really tempted to track down my old French teacher and see if he still has any of those old lyric sheets.
     - Pretty much any other song I love to sing by myself.  There are many.  The Magnetic Fields will be a prominent feature.

  • We play a lot of Christian music for the baby, especially "in Christ Alone".
conversly, I also listen to Ludacris' "Get Back" pretty much every day :)

I have a hard time not crying to a lot of traditional lullabies.  I swear I'm not that big of a softie, but it gets to me sometimes.  I can't carry a tune to save my life, so hopefully baby doesn't mind for a while.

I really like the "rock a bye" versions of famous (non-kiddie) songs.  They have a ton of CD's, but you can even just do the Pandora station.  I like them for a while, but after a while I think the xylophone can get a little annoying.

ETA: I'm really digging the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Beatles, and Journey lullaby versions.
  • @js8812 We use Rock a Bye when I have a cold and can't sing or sometimes just for variety. I really love the Weezer and Bob Marley stuff they have in addition to what you've mentioned. They're available through Prime music on Amazon too!

Rock-a-bye baby versions are the best!

Oh I would love the Weezer stuff!  Good suggestions.
  • How have I not found this thread sooner?!  I too need ideas for bed/naptime songs.

@mrstmoose We may just be soul sisters with the 90's rap (and your 1912 Jayhawk profile pic...ROCK CHALK!).

I was working on the nursery one day while listening to my Dr. Dre Pandora station.  DH walked in right in the middle of me belting out DEEEZ NUTZ by Dre...he was mortified and told me I needed to be listening to Dolly Parton instead.  At that moment I realized I had married his Grandpa Harvey.

Our LO gets quite the eclectic mix in our household: The Beatles, country (mainly George Strait), Breaking Benjamin, Grace Potter, 80's, Disturbed, ZZ Ward, 90's rap, etc.

I love the Rock a Bye suggestions, thank you!

  • I'm a Disney nerd. I've been trying out "Baby of Mine" from Dumbo and listening to "La La Lu" from Lady and the Tramp. I picked these up from this website.... https://www.babble.com/toddler/the-sweetest-disney-lullabies-to-sing-to-your-baby-2/
How in the world can you get through "Baby of Mine"? I literally cannot finish that song without dissolving into a puddle of tears! I think it is because my mom would always sing it to me and it really brings up something super deep inside. And this is from a woman who sings semi-professionally, mostly at funerals! I can usually make it through anything, but that one is a doozy. I am actually tearing up right now just thinking about it.
"Baby Mine" slays me too. Definitely one of my all time favorites to sing to DD, although that crying thing usually happens and then she hops off my lap mid-song uninterested with my blubbering lol.

I also really like JJ Heller's music to sing to babies, especially "Boat Song" and "When I'm With You."

This baby will probably know all of DD's lullaby music just from baby, DD, and I rocking every single night to it! It's Celtic Woman's Lullaby album, and it's just so stinking beautiful. My favorite one is Goodnight my Angel. Despite all of these beautiful songs my baby hears, I put on Watch Me and Gangnam style earlier, and baby was boom booming in my belly haha. I'm already cursing my kid's crappy taste in music.
  • My kids have each liked different songs, but I tend to favor songs from musicals or church hymns.  My son loves Edelweiss; Here I Am,Lord (he would always calm down to that as a baby); Twinkle,Twinkle; and Away in a Manger.  My daughter prefers You Are My Sunshine; Down to the River to Pray; and Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
