How YOU doin'? (Symptoms thread April)

I don't see that anyone has started this yet so if no one objects, I will! :)

My hips hurt. Yesterday it was my left side and today it is on my right. Making room for baby? I really regret not booking a massage for this weekend.

Re: How YOU doin'? (Symptoms thread April)

  • All in all, I've had a really easy time of it with my pregnancy but a few things are starting to drive me crazy (all old problems that have gotten worse with pregnancy).

My hips are killing me at night when I'm trying to sleep.  Especially the left one and especially when I get cold.  I have femoral anteversion (twisted femurs that leads to strain on my my hip joints and ligaments) and tend to get tendinitis a lot.  Sleeping with a pillow between my legs is doing absolutely nothing.

And my blood sugar has also been taking periodic nosedives, which is fun.  The last couple of weeks have been particularly bad.  I've been trying to snack more to keep my levels even, but it's still hit or miss.

Also, this is completely and utterly TMI, but in spite of drinking lots of water, taking fiber supplements and Colace everyday, I'm apparently so constipated that I either have internal hemorrhoids or fissures.  I've been bleeding from my rear every time I have a BM lately (and most of the time when I fart).  This is getting bad.

My doctor's answer from the beginning of my pregnancy has been "eat more fiber" (he swears that if I just eat a bowl of bran cereal every morning that everything will be magical).  No stool softeners (even though my RE says they're safe), no gentle laxatives like Miralax (same), just fiber.  It's not working, even with the forbidden stool softeners added daily.

  • @MojieJo I am so sorry. That sounds terrible. Are you taking iron? My doctor suggested I stop taking iron (it's in my prenatal) since I was dealing with constipation and diarrhea for 2 weeks. I took Myralax and it helped but I only took it twice bc I feared it was causing the diarrhea. The fiber your doc is suggesting will only bulk the poo up, not help it exit your bum gently. I'd get a second opinion from a pharmacist or your internal medicine doc if your obgyn won't help you.

  • @blondie080300 I've considered switching prenatals to something without iron, but I need to take a specific sort of vitamin for my MTHFR deficiency and so far I've only found one without iron and you have to take 8 pills a day (spread out over three doses) with that one.  There's no way I'd remember to take it, not to mention the hassle, especially since they say not to keep it anywhere other than the bottle it comes in.

I'd see my GP, but she retired and no one in the practice or at urgent care will see me since I'm pregnant.  They all insist that I see my OB for all medical issues.  It's like a revolving door. :frowning:

I may have to ask a pharmacist because this is getting ridiculous.  It just started getting bad within the last couple of days, but it's not something I want to prolong.

  • @MojieJo That sounds so frustrating! Another thing that has been helping me is prunes. I know that is fiber but it did help soften my stool a little too. I would talk to a pharmacist and see what they suggest. I'm so sorry you're suffering. It might be worth trying to remember to take the 8 pills (maybe set a reminder alert in your phone?). At least until your bottom heals since I don't know how it will heal if you don't change up the pills. But I am def not a doctor.

  • The thing that always works for me when I'm dealing with constipation is dried apricots. Sometimes comes with gas and discomfort, but it always makes me go. After I had my LO via C-section, my guts were super messed up. I had DH get me some dried apricots, ate several (7? 10?) and it helped. I'm so sorry you are dealing with that. It sounds awful.

@blondie080300 I might have to try the other brand of prenatals.  I'm on the last half of my current bottle and I can get the other brand on Amazon when I need a refill, but maybe I'll get them sooner since you have a good point about trying to get things healed.  My only concern is the times I have to be out of the house when I'm supposed to be taking my afternoon dose.  I imagine it won't be the end of the world to put them in a pill keeper on those days, since it's supposed to be a moisture-prevention issue in keeping them in the bottle.  I'm guessing that as long as they're not out of the bottle for days at a time that they'd be fine.

I tried prunes at the beginning of my pregnancy and didn't notice a change, but I'm willing to give them another shot.  I actually like the taste, so it's not a big deal to eat them.

    Thanks for the input!

@sporty1216 I've tried dried apricots (around 5 or 6 weeks when it was first starting to be an issue) and didn't notice much of a difference, but, like prunes, I'm willing to try again!

On the plus side, I need to snack during the day anyway, so I could kill two birds with one stone eating prunes and apricots for my snack.

  • @MojieJo That sounds AWFUL. I don't get constipated on your level but when I do I eat a handful of prunes (gross but does the trick.)

My fun new symptom (19 weeks today) is  increased round ligament pain (I think.) BTDT moms, when is the point where you would get worried about it? My midwife said its normal while stretching or moving too fast. But today it's been while I'm driving or just sitting, and a little sharper than usual. It's on the right side in between my hip and groin, and lasts a few seconds before it goes away.
  • @Katie8687 It is pretty awful, unfortunately. :frowning:

I'm just glad I know where it's coming from, so I'm not freaking out thinking that I'm having vaginal bleeding.  At least there's a silver lining!

I wish prunes helped me the way they seem to help other people, but I haven't ever noticed much of an effect.  I think I'm going to give them another try, though, because this is just ridiculous and I'm desperate.  Luckily, I actually like the taste of them (I'm apparently weird), so it's not too much of a hardship to snack on them!

I've been having round ligament pain, too.  Most of the time it's just when I sneeze hard and jerk things or sit up too quickly, but there have been days where I've had it almost the entire day.  I don't think it's anything to worry about.  Baby's probably going through a growth spurt or has moved position, but you can always give your midwife another call if you're concerned.  Better safe than sorry.

  • @MojieJo It sounds like you've tried almost everything! Have you ever seen a gastroenterologist? I had colon issues and they gave me a suppository prescription in case I went through a constipation rut. (Of course they'd have to make sure it's safe for pregnancy but might be worth looking into and asking your primary physician for a referral.)

That's reassuring to know that RLP doesn't feel exactly the same for everyone! If it gets worse it starts to feel different in a bad way I'll definitely give my office a call.
  • @Katie8687 I saw a GE a long time ago when I was having issues with what is most likely IBS.  They did a colonoscopy and some other testing and couldn't pin down what the trouble was (nothing visibly wrong).

I used to have chronic, unpredictable diarrhea before it switched to (mainly) constipation several years ago (I still get bouts of diarrhea now and then), so apparently I just have really unhappy intestines.

Might be time to go back, though, if I can get a referral!

  • Yep. RLP here too. I just sneezed twice in a row and had terrible pain. I've also just been sore in my lower abdominal area. Not sure if that is RLP or my c-section scar or what. I don't remember this from my first pregnancy, but it seems pretty normal.
  • @MojieJo I got terribly constipated recently that led to a hemorrhoid issue that left me in so much pain I was scared to poop. I ended up using Preparation H suppositories. They helped with the pain and with getting everything out. I don't know if it will help you at all, but I thought I would mention it.

For my symptoms... my hips are starting to hurt at night. This happened during my first pregnancy, but I don't think it's as bad this time. I'm also having lightening crotch. My painful boobs are leaking, and my belly is getting hairier by the day. There is nothing glamorous about pregnancy. Oh, and my forehead and chin broke out in zits.

  • @camichael84 I didn't know they were safe during pregnancy!  I'll have to look into those.  Thanks!

  • @MojieJo Definitely check with your OB, but mine told me they were fine. Even though they were on my lists of medications I could take, I still called to ask. They also recommended one or two daily Colace to me, but I see you're already on that.

  • @camichael84 I'll see if I can ask at my appointment on Monday.  Technically I see three OB's (rotating), but so far I've only seen one and he refuses to tell me anything OTC that's safe to take (he doesn't believe in taking any non-prescription meds, I guess, since every time I ask he just avoids answering my question and tells me to eat fiber or drink water or something non-medical), but I'm supposed to see a different doctor on Monday.

Hopefully it's not like last time where I was booked with someone else and then they had to do a delivery and I got the same one I'd been seeing instead.

  • Oh the RLP. I don't remember it this early with my daughter. It takes my breath away. I scared the ish out of a coworker the other day when I got up from the desk chair too quickly.

Just realized when looking at the calendar that my OB's office booked my a/s at 22.5 weeks (I'm currently 17).

Should I ask to have it booked sooner or is this timing ok in the opinion of the BTDT mamas?

Edit: Oops - meant to put in Randoms thread. My mistake  :#
  • Anyone else still having issues with vomiting? I don't vomit as frequently now in the second trimester (16 weeks) but still a few times a week.
  • Ah825 said:

Yeah I get lots of bloody noses. I've read it's due to the increased blood flow. I'm over it! This can also be a problem with tooth brushing but that hasn't been a problem *yet*.

Best of luck to us all!
  • @Ah825 definitely getting that one! I never really had problems with it before, but now it's every morning, even with a humidifier or nasal saline.

I'm also getting dry skin and acne, dark spots on my hands, RLP, and general aches in my lower torso. Plus occasional lightning crotch...and I'm still convinced I'm more bloat than bump, although I've embraced it either way. I second what camicheal said, I ask not feeling the glamorous glow!

  • YAS the RLP!!! I sneezed this morning and it felt like someone freaking stabbed me! And my hips and back aching- ugh! Some days it's not so bad but others it's rough- wakes me up at night, gives me even worse restless legs than I already had, and I just can't get comfy. I've got a real bump going on finally- a smaller one but it's more bump than bloat now, and I swear I can feel stretching, and more pressure lower in my belly where the bump's growing more- also where the first few barely noticeable light stretch marks are appearing. It's frustrating, but amazing at the same time :)

Yes to the bloody noses when I blow (which is frequent!)....so weird and kind of alarming to see. Also yes to the hip pain and I just stared getting some heartburn this week.....I got it the other day after having a yogurt and granola bar for breakfast....you would have thought I ate a bunch of sausage biscuits! I almost wished I had if it was going to feel like that anyway. Good luck to everyone!!
  • @Ah825 Yes to the bloody nose here, too.  It's been going on for me since about 10 weeks or so.  I wake up with my nostrils caked in dried blood, too, although it never actually runs out of my nose.

I think mine is being compounded by the air in our house being dry.

Maybe do a little research on how to help him feel more involved in the pregnancy? I know I read some tips in some of the books I have. Good luck!

  • I never knew what round ligament pain was, but everyone on here keeps talking about it. So I looked it up, and YEP, those are the stabbing jabs I've been feeling when I stand up too quickly! Yikes. Glad to know what it is. I've also been feeling like my uterus is stretching for the past few days -- of course it could also be just muscles and/or things just moving around in there to accommodate. Just mild lower abdominal discomfort that is pretty constant. Nothing really painful, just there.
  • I would give anything to just now start having heartburn. :) With my 1st and now my 3rd pregnancy, heartburn made its appearance from the very beginning. It's terrible!
  • Yes, I've experienced the round ligament pain as well. It only happens when I go from sitting to standing quickly or if I stretch a certain way while laying. It sucks though. Hubby keeps getting concerned when he sees me wince in pain.

The heartburn has only just started to become a real issue. Friday night I ate a lot of pesto and had a horrible night of sleep as a result. Had to sleep basically upright to be able to sleep. Not fun. :(
  • No heartburn yet but I always get it bad at the end of pg.
Not really sure it's a symptom but lately my deodorant does NOT seem to be working. Like, 30min after a shower I was noticing I already had bo. Took me about a week of denial and reapplying to think it had to be pg related and switched deodorants.  So far so good.

  • @blondie080300 Well luckily I didn't even have to go there- I ran an errand this morning and he did more than half the dishes and cleaned up the kitchen a bunch. And he started helping me go through the clean clothes to get rid of things he doesn't wear that we can donate. I'm trying to do a little "excavating" of his stuff on his side of the room to make baby steps towards prepping our room for the "nursery" which will basically be that side of the room. I definitely think he feels a little disconnected from the experience at the moment, so I'm trying to include him more. :)

And as for feeling the baby- I'm super sensitive and super in tune with my body- sometimes too in tune lol- so I feel a lot more than most people do even when I'm not pregnant! I had originally thought maybe it was just a new weird symptom, the fluttering sensation, because it's "early" and I had felt something similar once earlier in the pregnancy. BUT when I was at the doctor this past week I was feeling it like crazy, and the doctor did the doppler, found the heartbeat and we could hear the baby kicking away as I felt it- so my doctor confirmed I'm not nuts lol! We just have a super active baby on our hands. Which I sort of knew already because the 12 week nuchal scan took over an hour since the little stinker wouldn't sit still for anything, just kept wiggling and basically doing little jumping jacks in there. If you haven't felt it yet, you'll feel it really soon! ;)

  • I am soooooo tired this morning! =( I don't really understand it since I got about 7.5 hours of sleep (which would be amazing if not pregnant). It is also what I typically average during the work week (if not a little more). But for some reason today I feel like a zombie.

  • We flew to SF this weekend, and I get sick on flights now, apparently. The first flight United served the guy next to me FOUR alcoholic beverages (isn't there a cutoff??). Their seats and rows are tiny, and after the second hour of stranger whiskey breath in my face I threw up.

Thankfully the second flight I was next to my husband, and I drank water and snacked the whole flight but still didn't feel great. I have to fly at least 2x more this pregnancy and I am officially nervous.

  • @nativetexan512 , I definitely barfed on my flight home from charleston last month. That was also new for me...

Yes to the bloody noses. Mine is a freaking mess. Not having all that many symptoms otherwise, other than being always hungry.
  • Yes to being constantly hungry.  I do not remember this with DD.  (I had a ton of aversions and when they finally went away, very few cravings and was able to maintain a very healthy diet throughout my pregnancy.)  This time, I want ALL THE FOODS!!!  I have major cravings that are REALLY hard to deny!  I'm constantly hungry!  And here I thought I did "so well" last time...when in fact I just had it completely easy!
