Horrible Baby Names

Re: Horrible Baby Names

  • My college roommate and high school friend. Last name is Man, her first name is normal, Alyssa...it's the middle name that kills me. Ima. Alyssa Ima Man. Who does that?!

  • I knew a Stormy Dawn Champion a few years younger than me in school, but that was a pretty badass name honestly, haha!
  • My mom mentioned today that she knows someone at work with a daughter named Winston.

I know boys' names for girls are popular right now and I like unisex names, but really?  Winston?

I guess it's right on trend, though.  So there's that.

  • @MojieJo on the same line I went to school with a girl named Winchester, as in the gun.
  • I know an avid reader who named her youngest son Ender Aristotle apparently from the Guardian of the Galaxy books?
  • I knew a woman named Diane. Spelled Di An. I called her Di Space Ann. She wasn't a very nice person, anyway.

Ender is from the Ender's Game/ Ender's Shadow series by Orson Scott Card. Awesome sci-fi books, got made into a movie about two years ago. I know a guy who just named his kid Ender too. In the books, the kid's actual name is Andrew, and Ender is just a nickname.

Our cat is named after another character in the series, Bean.
  • I have a friend who named his son Atticus. I think it's pretty cool, at least until the To Kill A Mockingbird prequel came out.

My moms neighbor had her son not to long ago. Her sons name is Taven. She was pissed when she found out her husband named their son after a video game. Taven is from a video game called Mortal Kombat.
  • I remembered another couple of them from my childhood in Ohio, land of the creatively named!

When I was growing up, there were identical twins who worked as lifeguards at the community pool named Bambi and Barbie (not short for Barbara or anything else, as far as I knew; just Barbie).  They were nice women in their mid-twenties.  Somehow I feel like they missed their calling as strippers with those names, though.  Especially since they were bottle blonde and buxom.

I remember thinking their names were kind of ridiculous, even as a kid, and feeling bad that their parents named them that.  Honestly, I think Bambi is sort of adorable for a very small girl (even though Bambi the deer is male), but it's just ridiculous on a grown-up and silly as anything other than a nickname at any point, anyway.

This thread made me remember that I briefly dated (ok, made out with a couple times) a guy named Blu Rivers when I was in high school.  I thought he was so cool.  His parents were total hippies, and so was he kind of!

My neighbor has a son in his mid-twenties named Atticus. He's cute! Totally fits him. I think I only like it on him because based on his age, it was obviously after the original novel.

  • Well just came across a girl whose name itself isn't problematic, it's the initials the name spells out. First name starts with an L, middle name starts with an O, and last name starts wth an L. Kid's initials are LOL.

DH wanted to name our second Ender, had she been a boy. That was a big fat NO from me.
  • I love the name Atticus; not for me to use, but I love how it sounds.

My daughter goes to school with a child named "Seven"; I asked her about it and she said she is the seventh child in her family.

  • There's an Atticus in my last BMB and it totally suits him and is incredibly adorable. I loved the name Atticus growing up, because of TKAM. I haven't actually read the prequel, is Atticus a bad dude in it?

  • @AnnaS930 I haven't read it yet,  but I heard an interview that discussed his character (among other things) and what it apparently shows is that he as a conflicted Southern man in a time when racial discrimination and distrust were the cultural norm.  It doesn't take away from the good work and morals he had in TKAM, but it places him more realistically as a prominent man in a small Southern town and is just more explicit in the portrayal of him as a man who can believe in the defense of others, while still not fully believing in their rights or capabilities.

Not the interview I heard, but a decent overview of what was discussed.  I'm usually only lukewarm at best on Jezebel, so potential apologies for the source!

  • @Jabreen Thanks for that, a really interesting take. Obviously, I still haven't read the book though I intend to.. but I don't think it would soil the name for me.  If people are part of the camp in believing that Atticus Finch was a racist to start with (from TKAM, I'm not quite of this belief.. I believe he fought for justice, not necessarily for the man he was defending - so not so much someone supporting black rights) and was more of a typical, middle-of-the-line white man of his time, then I guess people will dislike the name Atticus for that fact. I like the name, and certainly immediately associate it with TKAM... still an OK name by me.

That makes almost no sense, but I'm going with it. It's Monday.

  • I'm going to revive this because SIL's friends named their beautiful baby girl Nile. Like the Nile River. If anyone has that name or is thinking of that name I'm sorry. I just can't.
  • There is a Clement Clements that just started working for the company I work for.

Also, a friend of mine in school had a grandma that was a twin, their names were Neena & Nina (not sure on the spelling)

  • @eliza+gleave - I wanna be Superstar Five Jemima! Brilliant name.

  • @jennlynn777 omg I thought we lost you! Haven't seen you on here in forever!

  • My daughter goes to school with a child named "Seven"; I asked her about it and she said she is the seventh child in her family.
Reminds me of the show "Married with Children". There was kid on it named Seven. And I think there was something on Seinfeld about it too...George wanted to name his kid Seven. So I always thought of it as a "as seen on tv" name. But I guess it's a real life name too :)
  • @BernieRae Victoria and David Beckham's daughter's middle name is Seven.  I don't even know why I know that.
