Refuses to sit up

My lo is very close to crawling and she walks when you hold her hands but I can not get her to sit up at all. She wants to just stand or roll over. Is that normal? That seems so odd to me. We tried putting her in bumbo seats or high chairs and she freaks out.

Re: Refuses to sit up

  • My daughter is the exact same way!! I think she has sat for a total of 15 seconds in her entire life. She prefers to stand or be moving. My doctor isn't worried. He told me that she probably can do it, but just has no interest in it. On day she will sit...I hope haha

  • Yes! My son didn't sit well until he was like 8 or 9 months even though he could crawl before then. He just wasn't interested and then one day he was ready. My daughter now seems to be the same way. I was worried with my son, but it was the only milestone he was late on. This time I'm not worried at all. They do everything when they're ready. I think some kids just like to crawl first :)
  • She'll probably become interested when she can get to sitting by herself. It's often hand in hand with crawling-when rocking on hands and knees they can go forward, or tip back and sit on their bum.

  • My first two didn't sit up until they started crawling (which was at 6.5 months).
  • Have you considered a chiropractor?

Sounds normal to me and I'm sure it will interest her eventually. But it's worth a try if something about sitting is making her uncomfortable.

I found with my daughter that a chiropractic adjustment made her begin to tolerate tummy time pretty much immediately when she once would scream as soon as I put her down. So I inferred that something was going on physically that was making that position uncomfortable for her. It's amazing the difference it made. I recommend that route if you have the time and resources.

  • Does she have any tummy troubles? Ours has reflux (nothing major) but I think it hurt his belly to sit up. He finally got used to it at around 6 months and started crawling shortly after. But he used to freak out when we tried to get him to sit, too. He either wanted to be upright or laying down.
  • I was about to post the same question. My daughter (29 weeks) has been crawling for two weeks and LOVES it. But sitting up just does not interest her. She can do it, but I have to guide her into position and even then she only sits for a few seconds before she gets on her stomach and starts crawling again. Glad to know I'm not the only one!
  • My LO has the opposite problem.  He will sit all day but has no interest in learning to crawl!  He prefers to just sit quietly or roll everywhere.  I guess he's just lazy like his mom!   :)  I think all babies are different though and have different interests, so it's not abnormal for them to reach one milestone but have no interest in another.  I'm sure she will start sitting when she's ready!

Similar situation here! Mine loves to crawl but straightens right up when I try to get her to sit on her own. Saw the pedi today for 6 months checkup and she didn't seem too concerned.

DD is the same way, unless the cat is around, then she launches herself at him and gets frustrated that she can't lol
