I may get flamed for this but on the m15 board a girl posted about naming her child and I may have spelling off but trust me it was outrageous. Princess A*myrikal (miracle was how she said it was supposed to sound) a lot of us told her to think about the name and her childs future struggles. Ps if your on this board im sorry lol.

I really don't like the name Maeve - but apparently a lot of people really love it. I just don't get it - and I'm not even really sure how it should be pronounced? Meh-ve? Like meh? Or rhymes with cave?

Rhymes with cave but with "may" instead of "cay." I like the author Maeve Binchy, so I've always liked the name.

I dated a guy named Ran.dom, and his sister's name was Starli.ght or Twili.ght or something like that. My brother briefly worked in a personalized kids book factory in Australia and his favorite name he came across was Mouse Blood. I hope that was just a really weird nickname...

@ShallowSeas Thank you for my afternoon entertainment! That blog is something special. She is 18 weeks pregnant now, can't wait for her new list of boy names.
Why does adding a Y make a name feminine? And why does destroying the spelling of traditional names, with the intention of using a traditional pronunciation, make it unique? I get not wanting to name your daughter Madison because there will be 5 in her class, but does changing it to Madisynn make it more unique? Or just confusing?
You are naming a person, not creating a cute Instragram hashtag.
Some of these names are nms but I don't hate them, though I might hate the spelling. I think Mame is supposed to be pronounced like Mamie? As long as it's not like maim (and dismember). Maeve (pronounced Mayve) is kinda old-fashioned but cute. Raegen is just weirdly spelled but not awful.
I can't get on board with Neveah and don't like mashable names.
I'm really sick of seeing names spelled with "y"... Madelyn instead of Madeline (partly because it's my daughters name)... Addyson, etc... and I'm really over the Kayden, Jayden, Brayden, Layden names...

I dislike really identifiable celeb names like Oprah or Keanu. And I think that if people understood what Cohen really means, they wouldn't use it as a baby name. It crosses the line into cultural appropriation.
I have taught kids named: Trek, Rayn, Ryleigh, Casino, Arizona, Charlize, Seymour, Tenley, Caiden.
And my sister knew a family where the parents were hippies and named all the kids after volcanos :-)
So this isn't a weird name but I knew family whose names were John and Corrine and John and Corrine. They had a boy and girl and named both of the kids after themselves. I always chuckled when imagining the confusion in their home when they were calling out to each other.
The guy who owns my bagel store's family is Joe and Mary and Joe and Mary. Their christmas card is ridic.
Also in only in NJ would you call it "your bagel store"

yup!!!!
Because it is a Jewish surname or am I missing something else?
It is not JUST a surname though. It is a surname with a very specific connotation in Judaism, and whose bearers have a special function in communal Jewish life. The Cohens were the ancient priestly class and even today, those with that name are called upon to perform certain benedictions and carry out special roles in a service. They also are subject to special prohibitions around things like cemeteries and death rituals. In other words, it is not just a name. And I do think that 'outsiders' appropriating it for that, especially if they don't understand what it actually means, is wrong.

Totally get it. Thank you for the lesson. I actually had to google it because I am one of those outsiders. Pretty sad, and oddly telling, that it looks like the mainstream popularity came from the last name of the family on The OC.
@HeyBooHey yes but more specifically because that's only your last name if you have a particular bloodline which has heightened religious significance.
Oh I so badly would love to join in on all this fun but I chose fairly unusual names. One is the spelling(because I think the original way is just plain ugly) and the other one well it's just not really a name. With that being said I prefer the more unique names and I despise half the names that people consider acceptable.
My mom had a daycare kid named Ransom. I don't know if that's an actual name or not, but I can't help but think about how the word is used in english and why they would ever pick it as a name.

Ransom Riggs is the author of Miss Peregrines Home For Peculiar Children. I am sure it will get even more popular after his books become movies soon.

Ha, I was coming here to post T.rek. I went to high school with a girl that named her kid that because it was somehow a combination of her grandfathers' names. Since we were all dumb high schoolers, I said it sounded like Shrek. I think she considers me a mortal enemy for life now. It took me a while to learn not to share my thoughts on baby names IRL.
