Need Girl Name Help Please!

My husband and I have a boy name selected and now we are trying to come up with a girl name that we love. We have several that we like, but not sure if any are the one. These are the names on the list (in no particular order) and some of our concerns about them. Please let me know your thoughts and we'd love to see what suggestions you might have! We're looking for a name that isn't too common because of our common last name. We also don't want any unisex names.

Isla- favorite name, but then our daughter would have the same name as the actress Isla F...... (if you can avoid posting the last name in the comments I would appreciate it! Trying to avoid a google search of the name leading back to my account on here/revealing our name)
Lilah
- not sure about because we don't want a name that has multiple spellings.
Veda- spelling/pronunciation issues.
Audrey- too common? My husband doesn't like Audra.
Hadley- husband is not a big fan of this one.
Ayla- just not sure if we love it.
Everly- guilty pleasure because it doesn't fit w/our usual style, but one that I would use because I love the sound of it.
Esme- husband doesn't like.
Ada- doesn't work with our last name (sounds like "ate-a ....").
Scarlett- sounds like it's describing our last name?
Charlotte, Ava, Sophia- love these but they are too popular.

Thanks in advance :)

    My thoughts:

What about Layla/Leila? It is a nice combination of Lilah and Ayla. Still has the multiple spellings issue though...

I see you like Charlotte and Audrey. What about another classic but less common name? Alice? Clara/Claire? Josephine?

I can't get behind Everly, sorry!

NAF of Veda but I do like Vera. What about that or Valerie?

Scarlett is very trendy right now and it's NMS so don't care for that one.

  • I like Veda, it has considerably less spelling/pronunciation issues then Layla or Ayla (which honestly looks incomplete in English )

    Suggest

    Astrid
    Vera
    Camilla
    Carla
    Cordelia
    Daniella
    Michaela
    Nicole
    Viola

  • Isla and Audrey are lovely. I also love Esme. Too bad DH can't get behind it. Have you considered Carys? It has a similar feel, yet not so familiar.

  • Isla, Veda, Hadley, Esme, Scarlett, & Charlotte are my favorites on your list
  • Honestly, if your child would have the same first and last name as a well known actress, that would be a no-go for me (although I do like Isla).

Lilah- I agree with spelling confusion.  I most frequently see this name spelled Lila.
Veda- Love this.  And I don't think it's difficult to say or spell.
Audrey- I don't think it's too common.  I wouldn't use it due a personal association, but it's a nice name.
Hadley- I really don't like this.  It's really not as classy as some of your other names.
    Ayla- Ok.  NMS.
Everly- I don't like this either.
Esme- Love Esme but if your husband doesn't like it you might have to throw it out.
Ada- Agree that it might not work with your last name.
Scarlett- I actually don't think it's too bad with your last name.
Charlotte, Ava, Sophia- very pretty names.

    Violet
    Amelia
    Amy
    Elena
    Lena
    Eva
    Laura
    Cecelia
    Iris
    Cora
    Ivy
    Imogen
    Juliet
    Mae
    Alice
    Clara
  • Isla- It's not like we are talking about William Smith here with your last name this would be an absolute no, especially since most people upon hearing the first name would be like, "oh like ..."
    Lilah
-would  drop for the reasons you mentioned
Veda- Like it, not sure how there would be spelling or pronunciation issues
Audrey- it's popular but classic, solid choice
Hadley- Team husband, it's trendy and if he doesn't like it, it should be off the list
    Ayla- toss
Everly- Should remain guilty pleasure only.  It's not solid and doesn't present well
Esme- Too bad your H doesn't like it because it's a great name, but toss since he doesn't like
Ada- like too bad about your surname
Scarlett- yes it sounds descriptive to your surname and it's trendy and the possibility of a nn of Scar are all reasons toss
Charlotte, Ava, Sophia- love these but they are too popular.  They might be popular but they are classic and timeless.  I wouldn't disregard if you love one.

    Suggest:

    Corrine
    Julia
    Eliza
    Edith
    Gretchen
    Hannah
    Alice

  • Thanks for all of your input and suggestions so far, I really appreciate it! A few things- I put Isla on the list just because it is my favorite and so you can get an idea of my style; I know we can't really use it. Sad because it's been my favorite name for over a decade and most of the people we've mentioned the name to IRL don't know who the actress is. But still.

Also, with Veda - I'm worried that a lot of people will pronounce it vee-duh instead of vay-duh. I know in the movie My Girl (my childhood favorite) she spells it Vada but then I'm worried people would say vah-dah. So that was my concern there.

I'm sad no one likes Everly :/ haha I think it's so pretty.

I definitely like some of your suggestions, particularly Carys, Iris (not sure if I'd like this with our last name though), Lena (worried about pronunciation issues), Eliza and Cora but nothing is jumping out at me as an "I love it" name. I'm also saving Juliet as a middle name. I find it works with a lot of the names I like and sounds so pretty.
  • All I can think of is kids calling her Darth Veda. But then I'm a dork. :) (At least they'd be pronouncing it right!)
  • I would pronounce Veda Vee-duh. The only time I've ever heard the name was in a mini series (based on a novel) on HBO called Mildred Pierce. Veda was HORRIBLE by the way. It's a shame because I thought about using it for my little girl, but I couldn't get past that awful character. If you're worried about pronunciation issues then I wouldn't use it. You don't want to be second guessing the name after you've left the hospital. I also agree that Scarlett sounds descriptive of your last name and because of that I would avoid any noun names (if that makes sense) examples: Pearl, Rose, Violet, etc. Suggesting: Aurora Edith Edna Irene Annabelle Penelope Louisa Phoebe Emilia Emmaline Leona

My husband has mentioned that to me as well. I feel like kids will make fun of any name but I do see that Veda has that problem a bit more than others!

@doodleoodle I hate when a character/real life person ruins a name! And you're right. I need to take out any noun/adjective name. I never really thought about problems with the last name but it's actually really annoying to work with! Thanks for your opinion!
  • What do you ladies think about Lola? I think it's cute and I knew an adorable little girl with the name so I have a good association with it. Does it age well?

She was a showgirl. I think it could be a cute nn but as a given 95% of people will start singing that song

  • I think Lola is underrated. I would be shocked if anyone she grew up with would have heard Copacabana. I'm 25 and when I was discussing the name Lola (family name) during my pregnancy with my friends half of them had no idea what I was talking about, including DH who is 31.
  • I like the name Lola in theory, but I cannot see it or hear it without getting the song in my head forever (I'm 36 so not quite in the song's original demographic). I agree that kids her age probably won't know it, but she'll probably have adults singing it at her all the time. Or at least singing it in their heads every time they see her. :)

Other ideas: Lyra, Tara, Elin, Cara/Kara, Cecily

I do love your name style! Almost all of your names are ones I suggested but had vetoed by my DH. I even like Everly, although it's a little too trendy-seeming for my taste. Good luck! Names are hard, especially if you and DH have strong opinions and different tastes. We were lucky to find ONE name we both liked, at 34 weeks. :)

I have an Everleigh and an ilyra. I love Layla (Eric Clapton anyone?) and Ayla (nerds Clan of the Cave Bear ref here) but my husband dated a Kayla as his only other long term relationship so both of those were vetoed in our case. I also really like Veda (Vay-duh) in my area Vida is Vee-dah.

  • Glad I asked because I never even heard of the song. There's always something! Girl names are tough!
