Braxton hicks- looking for experienced moms

edited April 2016 in May 2016 Moms
Any of you on your third + pregnancy notice you have more Braxton hicks than previous pregnancies?
I phoned in my doctors office after having an unusual weekend of BH's. It seemed like every bump in the car, getting out of the car, walking, standing up from sitting, etc sparked a BH. I was drinking tons of water, emptying my bladder frequently, etc. I wasn't doing much- just errands with help. No lifting, etc. A nurse called me back- misread the note left and thought I was having consistent contractions. I explained my concern and basically was told to rest more, drink more water, etc. And, I got the preterm labor talk.
I just don't remember having so many in my previous two pregnancies. So far today, I've had zero BH's. It's never consistent nor do I exceed 6/hr that my doctor calls "too many".
Just seems strange to get them with any movement some days.

Re: Braxton hicks- looking for experienced moms

  • It's my second pregnancy, and my BH contractions are similar to what you describe.  I often contract when I stand up, pick up a toddler, stand and cook dinner, and even random times at rest.  I don't know whether to categorize my contractions as BHs or uterine irritability, but either way, I'm still pregnant, and this has been going on since week 19.  I've been checked 3 times when the contractions were happening way too frequently, and thankfully, I've been closed each time.  How many weeks are you now?  Good Luck to you!

  • Yes!  This is my third pregnancy and do not remember getting Braxton Hicks with either of my first two.  They have been really intense these past 2 weeks. I have my next OB appt on Thursday, so I will definitely be bringing this up. I am 34 weeks.

  • I'm 32 weeks on Wednesday.
My nurse practioner kinda brushed it off as "normal", unless it's consistent or more than 6 per hour. They suggested pelvic rest and maybe lighter duty at work. That's it.
I'm wondering if it's more uterine irritability vs true BH's. Seems odd that certain basic movements create a contraction. But, for now... all ok.

  • I've noticed a lot BH this pregnancy compared to my other two. I'm at 34 weeks now and am starting to have a hard time telling if I'm having strong BH to weak contractions. They are painful enough that I have to stop what I'm doing and breathe through them but are not occurring at relative intervals. Will talk to the Dr about it tomorrow at my routine appt.
  • This is my third pregnancy and I never remember them like this either! Our uteruses must be used to being stretched out by now ;)
  • Yes- this is my third pregnancy and I feel like they are worse this time.  The other night I was having them for hours even when I was in bed resting. They are painless for the most part and I have been neglecting myself a bit (dehydrated, exhausted, lifting kids and doing too much around the house...) so I'm not really concerned but I need to slow down I think.  My next appointment is Friday so I will be bringing it up with the OB.
  • You're welcome. BH are discussed constantly on this board lately. So there's a thread where we discuss them all to compare notes to not clog up the board :)

  • Only a STM, not TTM, but I've noticed mine are more frequent and more intense compared to last time. And ditto the contrax that happen randomly while resting in bed. I mentioned it to my midwife, and she's not concerned at all and says that BH typically do this the more pregnancies a woman has. She says the uterus loses tone with each baby, and BH are the body's way to restrengthen the uterus for birth.
  • Yep, 3rd time around, BH a ton
  • Glad my observation was right! Pregnancy is not any easier the third time!
  • Braxton hicks are ten times worse this time, I rarely felt them with my other three pregnancies!

Ok while I have all you "experienced moms" in one thread- I have a question for you! I have been induced with ALL three of my previous pregnancies...please tell me some good news. I would really like to not be induced this time!!! Tell me you were induced with your first couple and then miraculously went into labor on your own with your last one.

  • I'm in the same boat as you, induced with my first two and hoping to start naturally this time. I have hope since none of the inductions were for my health, one was for a very large measuring baby (9.5 lbs who came out at 8) and the other was transverse and when I went to do an ECV and she flipped head down right before so we decided it was best to get her out before she flipped back.

    Good luck to you!
  • Thanks! All of my inductions were just because I got to 41 weeks and I never dilated past 2 cm and never effaced at all. I just want to experience what it is like to go into labor on my own!
