What will your newborn sleep in?

edited April 2016 in June 2016 Moms
I'm sorry if this has been posted before but I am trying to decide if I should have my baby sleep in a bassinet or use my pack and play for the first few months. Whichever one we use will be right next to our bed. If what you are using isn't on here I put an option for other and feel free to share what you are using

Re: What will your newborn sleep in?

  • Mini co-sleeper next to me until 6 months then moving upstairs to the crib. That's what I did with DS anyways and it worked great!

  • Rock n play at the beginning
  • I am certain it will be a mix of Pack N Play and co-sleeping.

  • Our nursery is attached to our room- my plan is to put the baby in the crib from the start with the door open that connects the room- and we will be using the owlet.

We have 2 dogs and I worry about leaving the baby in our room and them licking the baby, etc when I am feeding, doing diaper changes, etc.

My other option is the UppaBaby bassinet on the stand next to my bed, which is a strong possibility as well. We'll have to see how things go the first couple of nights.

We plan to use the Halo Bassinest next to the bed for the first few months, then will transition to the crib upstairs.

@laurenm2123: Same here--don't want my dog to be able to lick the baby in the bassinet (or at all, really). Ick. We'll likely keep the dog and our 2 cats out of our bedroom at night to eliminate the worry with baby, and will definitely close the animals out of baby's nursery when s/he is in the crib.
  • We're doing a PNP in our room until he's sleeping most of the night and then will move him into the crib he'll be sharing with big bro. The every two/three hour MOTN feelings are so much easier when you can stumble across the room and then nurse in bed nstead of across the house :)
  • RnP or crib....wherever they sleep better.  I'll be sleeping in their room for the first few months.

@laurenm2123 and @crdo believe me, your child is more likely to lick/bite the dogs than the other way around...1 and 2 year old logic is not always sound lol. My mom worried about our dog licking the kids, turns out she should have been worried about the kids doing it.:)
Haha, good to know! I'm much more comfortable with a 1-2 year old being licked (or vice versa!) by the dog than my newborn/infant. I'm mostly squicked out by the thought of my teeny, not-yet-vaccinated baby getting licked by my dog.

Yeah I'm sure that's so true- if our nursery wasn't right next to our room we would definitely be doing that. I just think it will be easier to nurse LO in the rocker in the nursery than in my bed with the two pups sniffing around!!

I should add that I plan on getting this co-sleeper to put in the crib so it's a little more cozy for baby :)

  • So I kind of feel like a bad mom already. We have been tossing up the idea of the baby going straight in the crib. My husband has to go back to work straight away and I don't feel he needs to wake up at night for me to feed the baby. Our dog sleeps with us and I am sure will move everytime the baby cries and wake him up. We bought the motion sensor and video monitor for her room as well.
  • We will use a bassinet. I have mixed feelings about when to move the baby into their crib, so I have no target deadline on when we will make that shift.
  • We will do a PnP until either my husband or I go back to work, then baby will go in his crib and we will switch off nights so neither loses our sanity too much for work.
  • We'll do the PnP (it has the bassinet/changing table attachments) until we feel comfortable putting her in her crib. With DD1, it was about 6 weeks.
  • We're are doing the bassinet that came with our PnP. We did order a different mattress for it though. It folds in half to fit in the bassinet part, then once baby is bigger we will put the mattress on the bottom of the PnP

  • For DD we set up the PnP and intended her to sleep there.  She hated it; we ended up "trying" her crib about 3 nights in and she slept great.
For this one we don't have room for a PnP in our bedroom (new house) and the nursery is upstairs while our master is down, so we are planning on putting in a bassinet.  We will see how that goes.

  • I was planning on doing the rock n' play again but was lucky enough to win a fancy halo bassinet. I am so excited to try it out!
  • Baby will sleep in our room in a bassinet for about 4-6 weeks and then we will move him over to his crib in his room.
We have had good sleepers in the past so I'm hoping this baby will do the same ;)
  • jmohio  don't feel like a bad mom. If your baby takes to the crib right away that is great! One less thing to transition later.  I tried with my first but he preferred the r'n'play. I think it felt more secure and I wasn't the best swaddle-er to just put him in the crib.
  • Bassinet at the beginning until transferring to crib.

  • No crib option?
All my kids go straight to the crib in their nursery, this one will be the same.

Don't feel like a bad mom! That has worked for us, and my kids have slept great in their cribs. Do what works for you.

Rock n play next to our bed and occasionally I'm sure I'll fall asleep with him in the bed. Then when he is sleeping longer stretches  I'll move him to his crib in his room with his brother.

  • Bassinet at night and pack n play during the day. Bedrooms are all on the second floor but while I'm on leave I'd like to be able to be on the first floor during the day hence the pack n play.  Hoping to transition to the crib at night after 6-8 weeks.  That's the plan at least, we'll see what she wants to do and we'll roll with that.  Other options are a rock n play, swing or the bouncer but we agreed the one place she will not sleep is in our bed.  Too risky as we're both deep sleepers that move around.
    Me: 29
    The Mr.: 31
    EDD: 6/2/16

  • We have a cradle, rock n play, pnp, and crib. Baby will end up sleeping in whichever one it prefers. The crib will be in the room next to us with a Nest camera but the other three can fit in our bedroom when we decide which one to try. No solid plan to move baby to crib but if possible I would like to keep baby in the room with us until atleast 4 months or so when SIDS risk starts lowering.
  • We're moving 2 weeks after due date, so we're leaving crib and most baby items at my dad's until we move to the city he's in. Until then we're thinking a mix of co-sleeping and playpen.
  • Bassinet at first until we find a sleep routine and then she will be in her crib. Of course it will be all about keeping the cats away from wanting to snuggle with a warm baby since I already have to kick the cat out of DD2's bed which is in the same room.
  • Our plan right now is to put him in a bassinet (it's actually a cosleeper that we just plan to keep in its bassinet form and not attach to our bed as a cosleeper) in our room for the first 6-8 weeks or so. With some flexibility of course. Part of me is tempted to just put him in his crib from the get go but I think it'll be easier on me to do that once he's not longer feeding SO often.
  • I don't really know. Thinking about a bassinet but I don't have one yet. And my first baby wouldn't sleep in one...she just slept in my bed. So I'm thinking this one probably will to. We'll see I guess!
  • I'm also thinking crib right away and that there is no need for both of us to be super tired all the time. Hopefully husband will sleep so that he can take better care of us during the day.
  • Baby will sleep where ever baby sleeps best. I not set on any one place for her to be. We will have a RnP in our room next to the couch (we have a sitting area in our room), but if she prefers the crib then that's where she'll go.  Our pediatrician recommends rooming in for the first few weeks before changing to their own room, so I'd prefer that. But after two very different sleepers I'm just going to go with the flow!

  • Thanks for the input ladies...I didn't put crib because I haven't really considered putting her straight into her crib after birth. We are moving right around my due date so her nursery and furniture will not be set up yet. Plus we want to keep her in our room for a few months until the risk of SIDs drops.
I'm leaning towards the PnP because it's more portable and easier to travel with incase we are in middle of moving. I was thinking about possibly investing in a bassinet incase she sleeps better in a bassinet or cradle but I don't like that they are only usable for up to 15 lbs for most of them the one i liked was usable up to 10 lbs I was 10 lbs when I was born so if she's that big we won't be able to use it for long. It seems like a waste of money.

  • I'm not sure yet. I want the baby in our room at first when we are sleeping, but whether that will be a PNP, bassinet, co sleeper, etc will depend on what he likes.
Our dog sleeps in our room sometimes, and sometimes he prefers the couch in the living room. The dog does not sleep in our bed, so my thought is the baby would be on my side (away from the door) and we can put a baby gate between the bed sides and one of the bureaus, so he can't get to the baby. We know he'll be super curious though.

How do you guys feel about cribs for only naps during the first few weeks? Our house is a split, so the main level is the bedrooms, kitchen, and living room.

  • Our plan this time around is to use the Arm's Reach Mini Co-sleeper at night, and Pack 'n Play or Rock 'n Play for naps (we have both, so we'll see what she prefers). I do like the idea of having her go down for naps in the Pack n Play in her room, as it is essentially a placeholder for where the crib will go, and that would hopefully make for a smoother transition to crib sleeping in her room once we're ready for that stage. My 3.5 year old is using the crib in its "toddler bed" form right now, and she's not quite ready to switch to a bigger bed just yet (but soon, within a few months, she will be).

  • DS1 has coslept in a queen sized bed with me for nearly all 20 months of his life. We have all the kinds of beds he could sleep in, but co-sleeping worked best for us.

I can't wait to see what DS2 is into as far as sleep goes.
  • We have a cradle that will be in our room by the bed, but I anticipate a goodly amount of co-sleeping going on as well. I don't actually own a pack'n'play.

  • PnP in our room until he starts sleeping for longer stretches at night, then crib in his own room down the hall.

  • Bassinet first then crib after she outgrows the bassinet.
  • We will do a PnP in our room at first, and will do that at night for probably the first six months due to the research that supports room sharing as a factor in reducing SIDS risk. @huskypuppy14 While I'm home on maternity leave I probably will try to do daytime naps in the crib, partly to get her used to it and partly for the sake of convenience. The room baby will share with her older sister opens into the playroom, which opens into the backyard, so she can nap nearby while I keep an eye on our toddler.
