Favoring one side when sitting

Obviously my baby can't sit yet at 7 weeks but I noticed when I put him semi upright in the swing or his chair he always ends up leaning towards his right side. He's able to turn his head both ways fine. I'm just wondering if this is normal or if it will require some kind of help to fix? His 2 month apt is coming up in 2 weeks but I was just wondering.

Re: Favoring one side when sitting

  • I would ask your pediatrician when you go, but mine does the same thing. He favors turning his head to the left, which he always did in the womb, too (at least he was always like that during ultrasounds, and during labor. He refused to turn his head straight so I ended up with a c-section). I don't think it's anything to be concerned about, unless you have reason to believe that the other side that he avoids is causing him pain. Regardless, it won't hurt to ask if you are concerned. Doctors get all sorts of questions, I'm sure.

  • Put a rolled up blanket on that side (supervised, of course), to encourage him to look the other way. It important for their neck muscles and heads to not always be looking/laying the same direction. Your doctor can make sure nothing else is going on at your next visit.

  • We just had our 2 month appt. and my DD has a tight neck. She favours one side and has a slight tilt. My son had torticollis and went to physio so the doctor recommended we start her on the same excersizes we did with him. We will reasses at her four month appt. There is not a big urgency to the situation becusse they won't do physio until 6 months anyway.

  • My pediatrician said if I noticed her favoring one side to encourage her to look the other way. Try putting a toy she likes in front of her and then moving it to the side she doesn't prefer. Mine seemed to be doing it so whenever I put her on her tummy, I would make sure she started out facing her less preferred side
  • Thank you @ashton2190. I will try that.
