Trying to Get Pregnant

Hobbies

I am looking for some new hobbies to occupy my time and keep my mind busy. I was wondering what you ladies like to do. I am thinking of starting a veggie garden but we might be moving so I don't know if I should or not. TIA

Re: Hobbies

  • Mine in no particular order: reading, sewing, knitting, cross-stitching

Sewing is the one that is most practical. I just pulled out my summer clothes recently and I'm altering all the ones that I don't wear into different clothes that I will wear. New wardrobe with no new purchases! (Well, I have to buy a few zippers and such, but those are dirt cheap.) It's also super fun, but definitely something that takes up my whole day. Reading and knitting are my go-tos for killing a shorter amount of time.

I'll be starting an herb garden as soon as the risk of frost is over in the northeast.  You can always do a container garden if you're worried about moving (plus they're easier).

I study medieval European history and cross stitch inappropriate things for fun.  I've also recently decided to get serious about my fitness and learn French (I work for a French restaurant group) as a distraction from all my TTC drama.  I have a bad tendency to get overly focused on one thing, so I'm trying to spread my anxiety around a bit more.
  • @housewifehobbyist  Oh, I forgot about languages! I'm learning French right now! I use duolingo.com, but I really need to meet some people who know it so I can practice conversationally...

    That's cute. I like that.
I refinish furniture, crochet, sew a bit, organize (yes, I totally count it as a hobby), read, binge netflix, bake/cook, board games(!!), and work on training the pups.

  • @mommyforthefirsttime I refinish/paint furniture!  I have a side business for interiors/home design/décor, and refinishing furniture is one of my favorite things to do.  I also have a silhouette cameo, and that occupies my time quite a bit.  I'm addicted to that thing.

  • @thj101 I wouldn't call ours a business, but we do resell a lot of the stuff we do. We buy junk at thrift stores, auctions and craigslist and then resale. And then a few projects we've been "commissioned" by friends to do work. It's a shame because my favorite things to redo are kitchens! What kind of things do you refinish? what kind of furniture?

  • @mommyforthefirsttime I can do just about anything.  I have done a couple of dining sets, many tables, several dressers and bedroom suites.  I prefer to be commissioned by people and paint their stuff, rather than have an inventory of stuff.. so that's always fun.. DH and I just did a faux shiplap kitchen island and it looks AMAZING. We also added a master bath in our house recently that is like a spa. DH is really into creating custom lighting, so we dabble in that, and like to repurpose old stuff into things like lights, shelves etc.. There's really a variety of crap we do! LOL

  • @thj101 - Oh you are so much better than what can do. I am in the little league. I feel like 99% of what I do is sanding. Ha. I call myself a professional sander. I don't mess with electricity ever. That's super awesome that you guys are skilled enough to add your own rooms. I stick to mostly preexisting stuff. But I can do a sold table. Ha!
How do you like your Cameo? My sister has a cricut that I have used but you have to buy the whole package of designs. With the Cameo you can just download and make your own, right? *jealous*

  • @mommyforthefirsttime haha I'm sure you're more than that.. I hate sanding, try to avoid it at all costs lol so being a professional sander is a good thing! I got the Silhouette for the reason that you can download your own stuff to it and you don't have to buy cartridges.  And honestly I love it.  I've done a lot of the graphics and such for DH's business with it, and used it to make signs, window decals, company car magnet decals.  I use it also to make vintage signs, and personalized gifts.

  • Gardening, baking/cooking, reading.
@crazypt2285 I second what @housewifehobbyist said about container gardens. It's what I started with and now I've moved up to raised bed gardens. I used City Pickers which I bought from Home Depot for container gardening and then switched to Greenes (also from Home Depot) for raised beds. The kits come together so easy and are easy to customize.

  • I'm going to echo @sarah0985. I have been focusing a ton on my exercise, which includes lifting and cooking/baking.

I also enjoy crocheting, knitting, singing, reading, and binging on Netflix! Lol!
  • Can all of you awesome crafty and talented people do all that stuff for me? I'm good at sports and that's pretty much it which doesn't do me a lot of good as far as hobbies. Any attempt at being creative ends terribly for me.

  • 1st off thank you for all your suggestions!!! I am going to look into container gardens and hopefully get that going. I think I need to get Netflix, I honestly don't know why we don't have it yet. We always talk about subscribing but we always think the other is going to start it. I have been interested in sewing/knitting and need to investigate it further. I am going to look up some books too. Since the weather is getting nicer I could download some books on my kindle and sit outside during lunch and read and perhaps get some sunshine (and a tan).
  • Do any of you try pinterest projects? We should start a pinterest fail thread because I could definitely add to that ;)
  • I don't have a creative bone in my body so I stick to baking/cooking as my hobby! DHs coworkers love me cause when I get in a baking mood I just send everything to work with him so I don't eat it all myself!

I also just got back into horseback riding (any other equestrians out there?) I ride hunter, and hoping to start jumping again soon.

I also take agility classes with my dog on occasion too, he loves it. If we're not pregnant by Christmas, I told DH that I'm getting a puppy for Christmas :)

  • Since the start of the year I have become obsessed with crocheting. I love learning new things and setting time goals to finish big projects, like blankets. It has been really helpful to have something to focus on that is not "super important" in my life right now. I am also starting a business, and since I haven't actually made money at it yet, it falls more to the hobby side of things right now. We are moving in less than 2 months now, so my other big "hobby" is trying to get rid of crap and organize things for our move. And of course I enjoy binge watching shows on Netflix I missed out on the first time around.

Just bought myself a baby grand a few months ago. I also am into fitness and I run. I just ran a half marathon a couple weeks ago. Now that it's getting warmer I can start running outside! I'm totally a fair weather runner. If it's cold or rainy, I'd rather run on the treadmill inside. Even if it's my long run. Also, I don't know if this counts as a hobby, but I'm a total cat lady. Love laying in bed cuddling with my kitties...which is what I'm doing right now. Lol

Im so jealous of anyone who can sew! I love vintage clothing and theres so many patterns still out there from the 40s and 50s. I see girls on IG in completely fabulous handmade ensembles and im over here covered in dog hair covered yoga pants haha :(

To keep my mind from obssessing when we TTC ive been running and listening to podcasts-im obssesed with the birth hour and the last podcast on the left. Two wildly opposite topics haha but if youre into birth stories and/or horribley innapropriate and hilarious talks about serial killers and conspiracies check them out. Im sort of a weirdo haha.  I also love hiking, trying to garden, and being outside with my DH and dog as well. [eta: half my original post didnt show! I keep having this problem when i try to make paragraphs am i totally dumb!?  :| ]

Fun thread!  I like to be outside so depending on the season I golf, ski, sail, paddle (canoe/kayak/board), hike, etc.  I also like reading, painting, wine and am definitely a netflix binger when I have time.  I am anxious to start golfing again...if only all the snow would melt!  Oh and travel but I would consider that my passion not a hobby ; )

I am also a big gardener.  Like PPs mentioned a container garden is a great idea if you might be moving @crazypt2285 It's a good way for any beginner to start

@housewifehobbyist & @britters314 Je suis bilingue et français est ma deuxieme langue. Bon chance!

  • @kiwielopingbride  I understood what you wrote and it made me so happy! I don't know enough French yet to ask you this in French though: are you Canadian? I know we have a lot of Canadians on this board. And if you are, do you know if Canadian French is different than the French used in France? I'm learning French because we might move to Quebec and I thought it would be useful, but I'm hoping it's not too different from what I'm actually learning.
  • @britters314 yes I am Canadian.  My mom is from Quebec and I live in Ontario but in the part were there are many francophones.  There are differences between France-French and Quebec-French but any understanding of the language will help you if you move to Quebec.  It's kinda like how UK-English is different than North American English...some differences but we can all understand one-another for the most part. There is region specific slang, a different accent, etc.  Where in Quebec are you thinking of moving?  Montreal and Quebec City are both beautiful, fun cities.  Also, I know a good immersion school in QC that does skype lessons or full immersion for adults if you are interested I can send you more info!

  • @kiwielopingbride  PM coming your way!
  • Love this thread! So cool to see all the different hobbies.

I do CrossFit 4-5x a week, hike, and do some beginner-mid level mountain climbing. I've found that getting outside really helps distract me from TTC.

  • @gardeniagirlknits lol I'm sorry I hurt your heart! I usually do when I say that to other runners. I'm a desert girl and I generally don't like any weather that's not bright and sunny. I also don't like to get dirty when I run and rain = dirty in my mind. Even though sweat is dirty and gross... But just go with it. Haha. I'm going to have to get over that soon because a trail half is on my running bucket list. Can't trail run where I'm at and not get dirty and you definitely can't trail run on a treadmill.

LOL you definitely have to train and trail race ON trail or it will kick your butt! (ask me how I know lol!!)  is it a 20k? When I ran out of my trail 20k I looked like I had been lost in the Desert for weeks. And I'm fairly certain at one point I considered how nice it might be if a mountain lion came and put me out if my misery.  This was one of those brilliant "I'll run the 20k trail and the half marathon back to back...  One training period for two races!!" no.  ;) good luck with yours though!  I actually prefer trail now though that I have trails to train on,  good luck with finding some good ones in your area!  (have you checked for a local trail running club?)
