How much is baby weight right now?

Hi, yesterday i went for my check up and baby is now weighing 3 pounds and my due date is June 16. Dr told me that he will probably be a big baby . Im stressed out because my first baby weight was 6 pounds 8 oz and my baby girl gave me 3rd degree cut down there. I cant imagine having an 8 pound baby. o.O  :s How much is your baby weighing ???

I have no idea, TB app says between 1.5-2.5lbs. My last measurement was 13oz @ 20 weeks and I haven't had any ultrasounds since.

Did the doctor give you an estimate on how big baby may be at delivery?

  • Well tomorrow im going to be 29 weeks and the apps says that baby could be between 2.5 to 3.8 pounds so its not that far off. However , the dr told me that he will probably weigh like 1 more pound  than my first baby. But still its stressing me out. Im just going to keep eating right maybe that will help.
  • I just had a 3d ultrasound at 31 weeks and they said he was 3 lbs 6 oz. My due date is may 30th. Ultrasounds can be off on the weight so I wouldn't stress too much about it
  • Ultrasounds have a margin of error of about 15%, or 1-2 lbs at delivery so it's entirely possible that you'll have a baby similarly sized to your first ones.  I wouldnt stress too much and certainly wouldn't drastically change your eating habits without the doctor telling you to.

As far as my baby, my lasy measurement was 11 oz at 20 weeks but I presume she's packed on some weight in the last 8 weeks.  Unfortunately I don't get any more ultrasounds since I'm low risk so I'll be going into delivery blind as to how big she is.
  • Agree to the ultrasounds aren't always accurate. My doctor even told me 10 minutes before DS was born that he would be 7lbs... He was 9lbs 1oz.

  • As pp noted, US weights can vary significantly then actual birth weight (1-2lbs in either direction) so I wouldn't put too much weight in it. Also, tearing isn't a factor of infant size, generally, so you could have a much larger baby this time and not tear.

There are also things you can do to help prepare prior to and during labor to decrease tearing (look for perineal massage in the 3rd tri threads or google). GL!!

I would not stress about the weight estimate, they are not very accurate at all. My first was 8 lbs 6 oz and second was 9 lbs 15 oz. I ate a lot healthier with my second, it mostly has no effect on how large or small your baby is already predisposed to be. Do you have a big babies in your family? That is probably a better way to get a feel for the size of your baby at birth.

  • I had an ultrasound today at 28 weeks, 5 days (due June 17) and it said baby weighs 3 lb 8 oz, so a really big boy (measuring a little over 30 weeks).  My doctor said not to worry or change anything; he may have just gone through a growth spurt, he may be big and come early, or we may just have a big guy on our hands who decides to come when we are expecting him. Like others have said though, weights are not always accurate on the u/s.

So important OP! And as @sgoldberg247 said as a low risk pregnancy I will also be going into delivery blind about babies weight and the damage he/she will do on my hooha!

  • If baby is measuring big, there's nothing you can do about it anyway. Just keep up your healthy pregnancy and hope for the best.

  • Don't worry about the estimated weight. They have no way yet of accurately measuring and they are often very off. I've known women who go in for a scheduled csection because they think baby is going to be huge and baby has been 6-7lbs. Plus, sometimes a little more chub on a baby is helpful in their first days. Eat healthy and trust your doctor to advise the best methods of delivery that will take care of your body and the baby as best as possible.
  • I wouldn't worry either both my boys were 9lbs and I had minor tearing. I think it just has to do with your body and it was easier the second time and the tearing wasn't as bad. Don't let it freak you out!
  • Don't stress. Both my kids were over 8 lbs. I tore with my first and didn't need any stitches with my second. Baby will arrive safe and sound, and to some extent you have to say "come what may" because no one really knows how big the baby will be or what will happen during labor.

  • Thank you all. Im just going to relax, eat right and pray to God that everything will be all right at the time of the delivery.
  • As others have mentioned, estimating baby weight prior to birth is an extremely soft science. Even my OB admits this. Your plan to relax and take care of yourself (do your Kegels!) is the wisest course of action.

  • If you're real concern is with tearing again, maybe look into perineal massage?

Just for kicks-had a scan today. I'm 28w6d and estimate was 2.3 lbs and 30th percentile. But as PPs have said - that's by no means accurate. And my OB today said that anywhere from 10-95th percentile is 100% normal and nothing to be concerned with. :)

(realize it sounds like I had a scan just for kicks. No. Meant I'll share my weight estimate here -just for kicks)

Big babies don't always equal tearing and small babies don't always slide right out. My first was just over 5 lbs and I had a third degree tear (probably because of forceps and the way he was turned).

Andplusalso, I have NEVER known doctors to be right on when guesstimating weight from your size, or the ultrasound, etc. I was told my kid was going to be huge before he came early (and he's never been big at all--to this day). They told my sister 20 minutes before that she was having a 8-9 lb baby and her girl came out at a petite 6 lbs 14 oz or something like that. Perhaps some doctors are gifted with great skills when it comes to guessing, but it seems that more often than not, they are going by anecdotal experience and averages and really can't see the future or account for all the ways that the mothers and babies vary (because we are all different).

  • If it makes you feel any better my grandmother had an 11 pounder with no tearing or even pain meds.   Like everyone else has said, don't worry about weight.  As long as LO is healthy.
  • At my last u/s I was 28 weeks and baby was measuring at 3lbs. Dr says that is the 70th percentile, and to second other pp's, these are estimated weights and can be off by quite a bit. I had an u/s with dd about 1 week before she was born and they said she weighed 8 lbs. She was 7 11 at birth so obviously she could not have been 8 lbs a week earlier. Don't worry unless your Dr is. ☺
  • Baby decided to barely move around for a few days and I started having bad stomach pain so my doctor ended up doing an ultrasound just to make sure she was okay at 26 weeks and 6 days, which she was completely fine. I was thinking she would be about 1.9 pounds, which is what I found online as an estimated weight at 26 weeks, and she was 2.6 pounds and in the 85% percentile. I love hearing she's getting big, the only negative I was concerned about was if she did end up being a big baby that she may not fit in to any of her newborn stuff I've bought her haha

@knottie44691675 My DD was 9lb 4oz and still fit into NB clothes for almost 3 months. I think it all depends on how they're built. Plus, many clothing brands run a little big in my opinion.
