Coloring your hair?

I don't think this has been covered yet in here, so thought I'd bring it up.  Any of you lovely ladies color your hair?  I did a ton of research on it and came up with mixed results, but for the most part it seemed that there was no proven risk for coloring your hair while pregnant, so I had my hair colored about a month ago.  I don't just dye my hair for fun - I'm extremely gray and was happy to find out I could still keep my roots up.  But then last week my OB said it was a no-no.  Do I listen to my OB?  Or go with my research?  What are you all doing?  I'm 11w, BTW.

Re: Coloring your hair?

  • I asked my OB about getting highlights and she was 100% fine with it. I'm not sure if highlights are different than all over color since highlights don't really touch the scalp.

  • Here is a great post about this subject: https://americanpregnancy.org/is-it-safe/hair-treatments-during-pregnancy/

Basically, the advice is it's mostly ok. If you're unsure wait until your second trimester. I just had my hair highlighted last weekend, and had my hair done throughout my first pregnancy.

  • You'll get mixed reviews anywhere you look. My OB gave me the greenlight, and says to just make sure you're in a well ventilated area. I still do all-over color and did with both previous pregnancies with no issues, but I'm not saying you or anyone else should. That's probably not much help, but ultimately the decision is yours.
  • I started a thread on this topic early on, but can't find it now.  I'm also super gray at the roots (and only 32) so I am going nuts over here, been covering it with gross powdery and spray stuff for the last 3 months.  My OB had said no color on roots.  But after discussing it with lots of friends whose OBs said it was ok to do a few times, I think I am going to bite the bullet and try to do my roots twice during this pregnancy.  I'm 12w now, so maybe not this coming weekend but the following one?
  • My OB gave me the 100% ok at my 10 week appointment.
  • Yes, it's okay.  I get my hair painted every three months.  I even asked if it was okay that the dye has to sit longer (thanks, hormones) and my OB said it's perfectly okay.

  • My OB also gave me the go ahead at 8 weeks, just wanted me to make sure that the area was well ventilated.  If it wasn't for my sister-in-law's wedding, I probably would have waited or not done it, due to this being my first pregnancy.  However, I trust my colorist who also didn't have any concerns with the type of dye she uses.

  • With my first pregnancy, my OB said it was fine. My new OB said to wait until second trimester, so I'm holding out for a few more weeks and hoping that nobody notices all the grey hair!
  • I did it a week or two ago because I couldn't take it anymore and the vast majority of what I read said it was fine to do. I have really dark hair, and I've had grays since my mid-20s (some of us are just lucky I guess!) I was already overdue for a touch-up before I got pregnant so...yeah. I just up and did it. I probably should have asked my doc for her opinion, but I didn't.

If you're worried, ask your doctor and/or wait until 2nd trimester.
