H2O Woes

So if I remember correctly I loved water when I was KU with DD but it seems that is NOT the case with this pregnancy.  I'm struggling with hydrating guise and I need suggestions ASAP!  For the most part, I actually gave up drinking juice over a year ago and I wasn't missing it at all until I got KU, now it seems juice is all I want.  I won't let myself really drink it like that because of sugar overload but as a result I'm struggling with staying hydrated.  Never really been a soda person so that's out too (not to mention it's worse than juice lol).  Been doing natural, no sugar added, Coconut water here and there but I can't drink that too much because then I end up in the bathroom lol.

Anyway, what are you drinking these days?  I've heard fruit infused water is great...any suggestions on what combos taste yummy?

  • I love cucumber in my water. It is by far my favorite infusion to do.  I also think ginger is great in water and would be good on the tummy.   Mint & strawberries are also good.  Play around with it.  I'm horribly behind on water today.  Yesterday I did great with about 70oz, today horrible.

  • Just experiment with what you put in. Mix fruits together, add herbs. Or you can try watering down regular juice too as a compromise.
  • Sometimes a little splash of Sprite may help, or really any fruits. You could also try lemon and/or lime or cucumber.
I personally don't like the artificial ingredients in Crystal Light, Mio, etc.

  • Thank you Ladies!  I'm not a fan of sparkling water but Strawberries and Mint in the water sounds yummy @MrsBinPA.  As does just experimenting with different combos @mrsjlang.  I'll also pick up some Crystal Light too @Greencows4812!  Mmmm, watermelon forgot about that, thanks @nauticallife

  • Hmmm, I loved a splash of Sprite and Cranberry in my Vodka so maybe I'll try a bit with water...thanks @atcwag

  • I've done a lot of herbal iced tea and infused water- I like strawberry/lime and orange a lot. La Croix is also so good!

  • @VirginiaHam I have not, I'll give them a try...thanks!  @MrsFlamingo are you making your own herbal iced tea??

  • @TrulyBlessed22 Yes ma'am! I just heat up some water in the morning, pour a few cups of it over a teabag in a carafe, and add ice/water to dilute as needed. I've been doing the pregnancy tea from Traditional Medicinals but I also like Tazo Decaf Chai or Passion tea. I don't sweeten but you definitely could! It's not super strong, but it gives the water just enough flavor for me.

My favorite easy thing to do is put some ginger crystals, lemon juice, and erythritol or xylitol (healthy sugar substitutes) in my water bottle and shake it up. It helped with the nausea last time and is much more interesting than plain water.

Oooh, and like @virginiaham said, La Croix sparkling water! Especially the passionfruit kind. Yum!

Ok, thanks for the tip @MrsFlamingo I love the Passion Tea and I usually only do 1/2tsp of sugar.

@zrain lemon juice may work as well.  Thanks!

  • Try this stuff.  I HATE flavored water but this stuff is "infused" (I know right?).  It doesn't have any sweetener in it so it doesn't taste nasty like some of the other flavored waters.  I love (!) the lemon mint, but the other flavors are really good too.  They sell this stuff at my grocery store but I was buying it in bulk on Amazon for a while too.  It's called Metro Mint.

  • I'm big on unsweetened passion tea from Starbucks. I get a Trenta every day. Tazo has brew at home too. Non caffeinated of course.

I also have issues with drinking enough water, I do seltzer mixed with cranberry juice. Many variations there. I second LaCroix, good stuff.
  • @SpiritYell0905 I love MetroMint!!! I get a bottle or two everytime I see it. And if you reuse the bottle, the 2nd and 3rd refills still have some of the flavor.

Ok so it looks like I have a nice variety of liquids to try over the next week.  Thanks everyone!  I knew I could count on you all!  I hope others struggling with staying hydrated found this post helpful as well.

I'll also add one I made at my MILs house earlier because I was super thirsty and so didn't want water.  She had some Motts Tots Apple Juice so I took some of that and added lots of water and it was oh so refreshing!

  • I am having so much trouble staying hydrated. Was before as well. I really hope I'm not hurting baby. I literally have a reminder on my phone every 2 hours to drink water. Ugh.
  • Have you tried Gatorade? It's a little high in sugar, but it has electrolytes and won't dehydrate you. If it's too sugary you could do half Gatorade and half water. It's my go-to if I'm not digging water.

I'm actually somewhat of a Gatorade addict normally. I have been trying to cut down on it somewhat and drink more water instead. I have just never been the type of person to drink 64 ounces a day. Also now that I'm KU Gatorade just tastes way too sugary to me, even watered down.
  • Tea if you like tea.  Or I've been doing water (hot or cold depending on my mood) with lemon in it.  (Sometimes with a little ginger or honey, but often not.)

  • Love this post! With my first pregnancy the only consistent craving I had was water. Not so this time. I'm working to get in 60-70 ozs a day whereas last pregnancy I was easily downing 80-100oz a day. :-(

I have found if I start drinking as soon as I get up it seems to kick my desire for water up a notch the rest of the day. I love all these ideas and will be trying them asap!

  • I am with @virginiaham.  I'm not normally a fan of sparkling water/seltzer but the La Croix are all I want to drink when I'm KU!

@trulyblessed22 I'm actually pumped to hear that coconut water makes you shit. I'm buying some today if that's the case.  ;)
  • edited March 2016

@whaat yes if you drink it in abundance it will help you go :)

"Coconuts are Great Laxative. One concern when taking too much of coconut water is its laxative effect. Coconut water may or may not have positive effects depending on the frequency of bowel movement. However, for people suffering from constipation, drinking plenty of coconut water may be a good idea."

    https://www.well-beingsecrets.com/15-health-benefits-of-coconut-water/

I buy the no sugar added brands like Zico and One.  Many like Vita better but it has added sugar in it.

  • I'm convinced this baby hates water because drinking it seems to bring on the nausea quicker than anything else. I have found if I squeeze some lemon or lime juice in the water that helps though. And I drink a lot of juices at home but because of the sweetness and sugar content, I've been diluting most of them with water 50/50. It lightens the flavor of most juices up, helps cut the sugar in half, and very few juices taste bad when diluted. I also am almost living on watermelon and other fruits.

I hear ya with the too sugary since KU thing. Well hopefully one of the other suggestions work for you. I will probably be trying some of them myself.
  • I've been a Lacroix fan for years anyhow, but I somehow didn't have them stocked in the house. Changed that this morning and just downed two of the berry flavor. Happy pregnant girl here!

  • Yup, I've always drunk plenty of water but no can do right now. I'm mostly living off of weak tea to stay hydrated. Though with the amount of sugar I get from sucking on jolly ranchers I probably could have had some juice by now, lol.
  • @rooftop I want you to infuse my water! Lol. Sounds kinda dirty....
