37.5 weeks and bleeding after sex

Sorry if TMI but after my husband and I had very vigorous sex this morning (2 times) he noticed that he had blood on him. Now, I know that bleeding after sex is quite common at this stage but it is my first pregnancy and everything I read on the internet says spotting and pink bleeding is most common. When he told me and I got up to go to the washroom, I had a gush of light coloured bloody bodily fluid come out and when I wiped myself and used the restroom it was bright red and some of it was very mucus looking (like 2 bloody mucus clots). Um, it was literally running down my leg. After a bit the red blood did diminish to light pink and tonight any sign of it has almost completely gone away. I felt the baby moving quite a lot today and have had no contractions or cramping at all.  I am not sure if I completely lost my mucus plug or not but in the past week have noticed small snot like mucus coming out everyday. I haven't had any problems with my pregnancy, and haven't had a cervical exam yet either. So my question is - was this just a normal side effect of rough sex or should I go to the ER to make sure everything is ok? My next OB appointment isn't for another week. Thanks!

  • Call your OB and ask. They should have an on-call doctor to answer your question if it's after hours. If you are worried and can't get ahold of your doctor, go to L&D.

Also I can't help but side-eye having rough sex that far along. Maybe it's time to take things a little easer until your baby arrives. At that point in my pregnancy I didn't want my DH touching me let alone roughing me up. Yikes.
  • I mean, 37.5 weeks is full-term, so I say have all the sex without fear. :P
This.  Especially since the 6 weeks after birth will be a no-go at that point! :)

  • Since its slowed and gone away, I personally wouldn't be too concerned. When I had a cervical check I had bright red blood and a small pea-sized clot afterwards and it wasn't anything to worry about, I'd imagine this is similar. If you're worried though it doesn't hurt to call your Drs office and speak with an OB for a peace of mind!

  • Your cervix is a spongy texture and when it's touched it will bleed. I assume vigorous sex would count as touching but you are likely fine.

  • Maybe the mucus you saw coming back out was just his semen mixed with cervical blood?

Hope you find a way to get your worries to fade and have lots more sex.  :-)
  • Thanks for your input everyone!
Just to update others who may be questioning the same thing, baby and I were/are completely fine :)
I did wait until my next appointment to ask the OB about it since the bleeding had stopped and I wasn't experiencing anything abnormal. He said the symptoms I described were perfectly normal and encouraged my husband and I to have as much sex as we want as it is a natural way to get my body ready for labour.
He even joked with my husband saying - "thanks for doing my job for me" AKA no membrane sweep lol.
I was examined that day too, not because of this but because where I live it was time to sign precautionary induction papers and everything was normal.
  • Glad everything is OK with you and baby. Enjoy the sex. I have placenta previa and haven't been able to have sex since week 13  :(
