Anyone getting a "mom" haircut before delivery?

edited March 2016 in May 2016 Moms
I'm torn...I had long hair before my first and chopped it into a bob before my due date.

My hair now is below my shoulders and I have a haircut scheduled for next week...don't know if I want to keep it long-ish or chop it.

Very important decision, and I don't want my hormones to decide ;-)

Edited: change the subject title...meant "getting" not "cutting" Ha!

I like the wavy shoulder length haircut that seems to be everywhere but not sure I wanna cut my hair... It took years to grow and it's only to my bra strap.

I'm keeping my hair as is, until and unless postpartum hair loss forces me to make a change (which I will do only tearfully and with much complaining).

edit: It's hard to advise you on whether a bob would be a good decision because I don't know why you're thinking of making the change. If it's for ease of maintenance, then I agree with PPs that longer hair is actually easier to handle -- you can just tie it out of the way and bam, done. Shorter hair needs styling to look nice, unless you're going as short as a buzz.

If you want to make a change just because you feel like having a new style or for some other reason, though, then maybe?
  • Personally, I would recommend longer. That way, you can just throw it up in a pony or messy bun when you don't have time to fuss with it. I found that shorter hair was actually a lot more work because you are kind of forced to style it every day and, at least for me, it is VERY noticeable if I try to go a longer time between shampooing.
All of this. I have waist length hair. I only need to wash it a couple times a week, which saves so much time styling it. Since it's pretty much always styled and my makeup takes 5 minutes, I can be put together even on days like today that DD was up all night and I'm feeling mombie. Worst case scenario it goes up in a ponytail or braid.
  • I also agree that longer is easier (at least for me). Shorter hair takes a lot more effort to style and make look decent in my case and longer hair allows for more options.

  • I've let my shorter hair grow out a bit so I can put it up easily while she's still really little. I plan to cut again around 6-7 months. Last thing I want to think about with a newborn is how my hair looks! At least if it's in a ponytail it's presentable
  • I'm bringing mine to just above my shoulders...and getting highlights ;) before delivery lol

  • I'm actually deciding not to cut my hair until Jaunary- it's kind of a wavy mess and when it's longer I can put it in a bun no fuss but if it's shorter I have to straighten or I look like a freak. Right now it's just passed my shoulders so I can put it up with some bobbi pin magic.
  • Longer hair isn't always easier if you have thin fragile hair that breaks off up high and gets super thin at the bottom if it's long :(:(:( My hair has been amazing during pregnancy, and I think I'm going to wait to cut it until I see how much falls out after. Until I know what it's going to do, I don't want to make any drastic changes. This probably isn't a consideration for everyone though, if your hair hasn't changed much or you feel like it doesn't make a difference in terms of how you cut it.

Omg I'm so glad you posted this so I can whine like a baby. I just got mine cut on Sunday... I got about 2 inches off but it feels SOOO short now and I want to cry when I look in the mirror because I feel like the shorter hair makes my face look fat :( I've gained a TON of weight with this pregnancy and now I feel like its noticeable in my face. I am not a happy camper. I know its only hair but mine takes forever to grow. My SO actually wants it shorter and blonder and wants my bangs back but at this point I plan to let it grow again and going to bleach it after baby arrives. I may cut it short once I lose this weight and feel back to normal. Just want to feel pretty, is that so much to ask? :( ok... cry session over.
  • I wouldn't cut it. From what I've heard, a lot of women lose a lot of hair after pregnancy. Longer (for the most part) is easier to throw up and not look awful if you haven't washed it for ____ days.
  • I cut mine short before DD was born and kind of regretted it.  It was harder to style, so mostly it just looked like crap since taking time to do my hair was the last thing on my mind.  This time I'm leaving it long and just getting some of the volume cut out in a few weeks so that it's more manageable.
  • I'm keeping mine long. I've pretty much always had long hair... I tried short a few times and just never liked the way it looked. Plus I think I'll really like having the ability to continue to just throw it up and out of the way when I get lazy, like I already do.
  • Like some of the PPs said, I also find longer hair easier. If I'm rushed in the morning, I just throw it into a ponytail or bun.  When I've had mine shorter in the past, I've found that I spend more time styling it.  Mine is fairly long now (about to the bottom of my shoulder blade in the back.  I wash it almost every morning and let it dry partially while I'm getting ready, so it doesn't take long with the blow dryer.  Then, I run a flat iron over it (even though it's naturally straight) to get it to lay right, and it only takes me about 5 minutes total.
  • I am growing my out. My hair is naturally curly and when its long, all I have to do is throw a curl activator in it and presto, done. When my hair is short, it looks ridic curly and I have to blow it out then straighten it. I figure the longer it is the more options I have (curly, thown into a bun, straight on days I have time)

  • Also keeping mine long, but getting a cut and highlights about 3 weeks before my due date so it doesn't look awful all summer if it's hard for me to make it to the hairdresser. I'm definitely planning on having my hair up more often (I rarely do now), just because these little fingers will likely try to pull on it and it's right at nipple height, so not great for breastfeeding the poor guy. I don't get the idea of a 'mom haircut' (having a child hanging off your boobs is probably telling enough as it is), and I'm also in the 'look fatter with short hair' team.
  • Keeping it long, but getting a trim/shaping before LO arrives so it's not ragged... My hair is long (down past my shoulder blades), heavy, thick and course. And at the right length that all the strands fit into a braid... Ponytails can be heavy for me and can cause headaches so braids are great!!! If I cut it short I look fat/butch w/ being so shot and curvy to begin w/. Not to mention that it gets poofy when it doesn't have the weight from being long to keep it down... Not a good look!!!
  • I made the mistake of getting an adorable bob a few months after DS was born. It looked fantastic... when I had time to style it. But that was rarely, so I mostly just looked like the Walking Dead.

This go ' round I just got it cut and highlighted last week. It's in an angled lob, so I can still pull it back as needed. My hair is thin and grows VERY slowly, but does tend to look raggedy when it gets longer. I'll probably get another trim and highlights about 3 months PP when the hair loss happens.

I'd say get a trim, maybe some layers or an angle depending on your hair type. But make sure you can still pull it back into at least a small pony.

  • I'm having this dilemma too!  My hair is down to my boobs right now and has always been super thick.  It looks TERRIBLE if I just let it airdry and I feel dumpy when I throw it up when it's wet, so I feel best when it's been blowdried and straightened...which is like a 1.5 hour process, give or take half an hour depending on my motivation.  Clearly I won't have time for that after the baby is here and I haven't figured out a good alternative style that's quicker yet.

So I'm debating cutting it to shoulder length, which isn't unusual for me to do every couple years when I'm tired of the length.  But I'm not sure if I'm ready to cut it, if it will save me time & work, or if I'll still just feel dumpy.  I have a hair appt next week, but I know at the rate my hair is growing currently I'm going for a root touch up every 4-5 weeks rather than my normal 7-8 weeks and this won't be my last appt before baby comes.  (Hopefully.)  So I think I still have time to make a decision but I am completely on the fence about what to do right now.
  • I chopped mine off around 2mo postpartum last time and will likely do the same this time around  (unless I decide to just keep it long). Right now, it's in a good, low maintenance long cut so I don't want to screw up a good thing.

For any DIYers...unless my hair is shorter than shoulder length, this is how I keep it trimmed (though I have fairly forgiving wavy hair): https://www.howtohairgirl.com/2013/01/5-diy-haircuts-to-try-today/
  • As much as I love having shoulder length hair, I'm never able to find the pins/clips I need to keep it up if I want it off my face (I swear those things disappear approximately 2.5 seconds within opening the package), so the plan for the time being is to leave it long and just stick it up in a bun/ponytail as necessary.

  • Omg I just want my hair long enough for a messy bun or a high ponytail. I cut it in december and got a long bob. I am just now able to get the back short hairs up in a low ponytail.  Now its at a stupid length and either want it shorteer or longer. I really want it longer. Thinking about dying it because I think doing something different would make me feel would make me feel better anout myself.
  • I'll get a trim closer to time since it may be awhile until my next haircut! No drastic changes, though. I've gone shorter hair, and while I don't find my harder to style as others have mentioned, but I want the ponytail option!

  • My hair stays below my shoulders, preferably to my shoulder blades, at all times. Every time I've ever cut it shorter I regret it. There's a ton of volume and its wavy so the length helps it look less poofy. The idea of washing my hair frequently makes me want to cry. Top knots are my bff.
  • I already did. My hair was about three inches lower than my bra strap and I chopped it to about my chin. I did it because I have bilateral sciatica and have to roll over and switch sides a lot while sleeping and the hair was constantly in the way. I actually don't really like my hair now and think once my fat face is gone after babe comes I might get it cut even shorter into some sort of pixie cut for the summer. My SO likes short hair, and I once had a pixie cut that I adored.
  • Another vote for ponytails and sock buns with a newborn!

  • I cut 4 inches off 2 weeks ago - I really needed a haircut!!
Pros: takes less time to style, dry, and wash.  still fits in a ponytail
Cons: I think I look less feminine with shorter hair.  not sure anyone else agrees.
maybe because I still need to get my eyebrows done (it's on the list!!)

You know that thread about mom's hair wrapping around baby's toes?  That's is my reason for ponytails 24/7!  right

  • I think now I'm going to keep my hair long. My problem is I haven't mastered how to do the cute messy bun.  I need a youtube tutorial or something, I don't like plain pony tails.

  • I'm giving myself till 2months PP. I really want to take maybe 5-6 inches off but my hair is super long, down to my butt, so it might make it more manageable.

If your hair is long enough and doesn't have too many layers, look up sock buns. They are a little more polished than just winging it and look super cute.

  • I just took 6 inches off to really clean up the ends, now it's to tailbone. I won't trim again for quite some time though, I'll see how the postpartum shed works out. I agree longer is easier, a quick easy wrap bun w/ a hair stick is my 'go to' most days. washing only 1-2x/wk.

Luckily with late spring/summer babies, their toes will probably be exposed way more often, so I'm assuming I'll usually notice if the toes have a hair around them - as opposed to a winter baby that's all bundled up all the time.
  • I really need to trim off my split ends before baby comes but I'll be keeping the length.  I love short hair ... on other people.  Long hair is so much easier as a mom.
