Wedge pillows

My chiropractor recommended that I get a wedge pillow in addition to my snoggle to help support the weight of my belly and reduce the hip/lower back pain I've been experiencing at night. She told me to try a rolled up towel, but that usually ends up unrolled, not supporting anything (although it does help when it is nicely in place). I've found a number of people referring to wedge pillows on different threads, but haven't found which brand people use. The one that seems to be the cheapest and easiest to find is a Jolly Jumper brand, but it has pretty crappy reviews from what I saw (people complaining it's too hard, mostly). What have you been using?

Re: Wedge pillows

  • I have been using a regular pillow in place of the snoogle and wedge. I basically lay the pillow flat in front of my while laying on my side and put the bottom part between my knees and the top part wedged under my bump. It's not to hard to adjust when I have to flip either. I waited to long to get on the snoogle bandwagon and then once I finally considered it, it seemed like a waste of money with how far along the pregnancy I was.  I would probably find it too annoying to wrestle with a wedge and snoogle when flipping anyways . . . if the towel is working when rolled up, have you considered/tried just tying a string or rope around it to keep it in a rolled shape so it doesn't unravel?

I say this from a place of love. No, no no no no. Can you borrow a snoogle from a friend? Find one consigned and deep clean it? I too thought a pillow between my knees was enough for my first pregnancy. Then snoogle came into my life.... you've gotta try this magic.
  • I have both a snoogle and a boppy wedge pillow. The wedge pillow is reeeeally firm - it does the job, but my stomach is sore later. And it kind of hurts if I'm not just using the very edge.

The setup I ended up going with is to use two regular pillows at my back, and put the snoogle against it so that the hook part (curve part? What do I call it?) supports my head (I need to be at an angle so I can breathe). The wedge goes beneath the snoogle hook and supports my shoulders/upper body.

I just use a little bit of the comforter for my belly - it's thin but fluffy enough to support without hurting.

  • I notice if I don't use my foam roller during the day to roll out my IT band (hold over from running), my hips hurt a lot more at night. You can buy one on Amazon. The only thing is if you've never used a roller, to make sure you go slow. I see people in the gym just rolling away which is terrible for you. It's like giving yourself a deep tissue massage, so slow and steady is the way to go.

Here's a demo if anyone is interested. I really feel like it helps my night hip pain.

  • @missnc77 : I have a roller (although I haven't used it recently). I'm perfectly fine during the day, sitting, walking, etc. I sleep well until about 4 am now that I'm seeing a chiro who is helping fix my misaligned pelvis. The reason why I'm looking for a wedge is that my belly is sort of pointy I guess (I still have an hourglass shape, but just a massive 20-somewhat lbs belly), so what happens is that when lying on my side, my belly pulls towards whatever side I'm sleeping on, pulling on my hip and lower back muscles. It's severe enough that I get up and feel as though I've done some sort of exercise that really strained my back. So I just need something to hold my belly up. The towel is a half-decent temporary solutions, but it always unravels, ends up on the floor or lost somewhere betwen the snoogle and the blankets (I end up having to shift sides a lot because of how much it pulls/hurts). I'm not exactly looking to have to fight with the snoogle AND wedge to get out for my 2-4 nightly bathroom trips, but I find I always end up getting up more at the end of the night, more so because I'm uncomfortable and may as well get up.

So if anyone has a wedge that they like, please let me know which!
  • Sorry if it seemed random, I just saw you mention hip pain. I thought it may be useful to others who are experiencing hip pain as well. Hope you find a good wedge!
  • I have the Boppy wedge and it works great in conjunction with a back n' body pillow (u-shaped instead of a c-shape like a Snoogle). When I need to flip over, the big pillow stays where it is and I just move the wedge around with me. No problem. The wedge is pretty firm, but it has a long taper so you can set it wherever is comfortable.
  • I already had a body pillow and a wedge pillow prior to pregnancy.  I use my wedge religiously b/c I have severe sinus and allergy issues year round.  I have my wedge pillow with two regular pillows on top of it so I can be propped up.  I have my body pillow on my right side (b/c I sleep on my left side) supporting my  back and I bought a small wedge pillow made for supporting the baby bump on Amazon for 15 dollars.  It is the perfect size.  It is not too bulky or anything.  I had thought about a snoogle or one of those other expensive pillows but decided against it b/c I would still need my wedge.  I got my regular sized wedge for about thirty dollars at Bed Bath and Beyond.  I have had it for maybe three years.  I had to get rid of the one I had prior to that b/c one of the dogs peed on it.

  •  I've had a snoggle from day one of the pregnancy. I sleep decently. I also use a regular pillow under my bump if I want to turn the other way instead of flipping the entire snoggle over (I can't imagine how heavy it is especially at night).

Never thought about the wedge - its unnecessary for me.

  • My mom gave me the boppy wedge and I use it between my knees.  I like it - that's all I use.  ...well, I also elevate my pillow for my head.  My biggest woe at night is carpal tunnel.  Can't wait for that to disappear after delivery!
  • I use a toss pillow under my bump, corner in (oriented like a diamond shape) and it's very comfortable.
  • I'm only here to say.... I hate the Snoogle.
    Body pillow all the way.

  • I just use a normal pillow between my legs. Works like a charm!
  • My chiro ended up lending me a wedge pillow she had since I'm only going to need it for a few more weeks. No clue what brand it is, but it's definitely not the boppy. It feels good to have it support my belly, and it's not too awful to have that combined with the snoogle. BUT, as per usual, it's a little past 4am and I'm awake and sore...this could be because she adjusted me yesterday though. I'll take an Epsom salt bath tonight and hope for the best.
  • Also recommend the boppy wedge.
  • I have jolly jumper wedge and honestly I stopped using it and just bunch up the duvet to support the belly now. I was having problems with the wedge hurting my ribs/hips. But I have a really short torso so it didn't fit well.
  • My ultrasound tech suggested the wedge pillow a few months ago, and it has been a lifesaver!  I have a Snoogle and also use a wedge under my midsection.  It gives me some extra support and helps with hip and back pain.  I only use a portion of the narrow edge of the wedge because it makes my ribs sore if I slide too much of it underneath me.

I have a small purple one and I believe its just from babies r us but I'll have to check when I get home. One of my friends gave it to me and its what she used to support her belly also. I LOVE IT! Simple, small and it definitely helps keep me comfy in bed.
