Screaming Fit

I took DD to visit my parents for a few days out of town. I always talk about what a great sleeper she is (because she usually is) and tonight she flipped out! The reasons I came up with are:
1) New surroundings
2) Overly tired (only napped 2.5 hours all day)
3) Over stimulated
4) Teething
In the end I'm convinced it was her teeth. I looked at her gums and they were white and lumpy... Teeth are right there! She was screaming bloody murder! Like, sad crying... Not frustrated, like she was really sad. I cried of course. I felt so bad for her. We gave her some Tylenol and 30 mins later she was asleep (also why I thought it was probably pain/teeth). Anyone else had to deal with a super upset baby? Any tricks to calming them down? DD is so calm usually I had no idea what to do!

Sounds like you handled it right. :)  It obviously worked if she was able to sleep shortly afterwards. Trust your instincts Momma.

  • I also have a great baby and boast to my parents and friends on how great she is and how easy she is to soothe. I just took a trip up to my parent's for a couple of days and she has been wacko! Same as you, new surroundings, her routine is off, over tired from being held and not sleeping Long enough, but all without the teething.

Shes has been really upset and that upsets me because I'm handling it all basically on my own. I love my parents and I know they love to help and help her and give me a break but she's not used to it and she cries and they try to soothe her when she's to the point of no return!

Its hard when I know my baby and she is just out of her element, and it makes me paranoid, like high high anxiety. Anyways!

I just have to take her to a quiet room and try to have her comfort nurse. If she doesn't do that then I I just try a bunch of different positions when holding her to see what she can handle and then walk around. I'm like you, I freaked out also, I am DEFINITELY not used to this screaming banshee stuff! Sorry I'm not much help.
  • We had a few days where DD was out of wack and would not let anyone else hold her and she screamed a lot. She wasn't napping during the day and we figured out it was most likely a mix a teething and a growth spurt that was prohibiting naps causing overtiredness. We gave Tylenol half an hour before bed when she seemed like she was in the most pain and it calmed her down.
Once her sleep got back on track and I think the growth spurt ended, the teething has been a little more manageable.

Henry did this the other night. He stayed the night with my mom because of mine and SO's work schedules and his routine was thrown completely off. Once back home cried for two hours straight, wouldn't sleep or eat and had no part of being soothed. He cried so hard he vomited. He finally wore himself out and slept for an hour then ate and slept for 8 hours straight. His routine is just coming back into play. Poor little man was way over stimulated at grandma and papaws house :/

I have had a lot of crying and it is much less now (yay!) but every baby responds to different things, if it was pain, you did the right thing, cuddles and Tylenol, nursing can help decrease pain if babe will do it. If babe has lost it, I swaddle, cuddle, bounce, shush louder than the crying, and sometimes let babe suck on my finger ( or a soother if baby will take it). This works for the over tired babe! I have one every day because she hates napping!
Edit: also the classic frozen wash cloth can help with that pain while waiting for Tylenol to work :)
