Growth scan thread

My growth scan is on Friday and I am
very much looking forward to it ! I can't wait to see LO and how much he has grown since our A/S. It's crazy to me that the last time I saw him I couldn't feel him!
If you have already been and want to share details I would love to hear about it ! How many weeks are you and how big is your LO measuring ?!

Re: Growth scan thread

  • I had my growth scan at 31 weeks, 5 days. Baby boy was measuring 5lbs 3 oz... and about 3 weeks ahead. I was told at my scan that baby weight can be off by up to 12 oz. He scored perfectly on his BPP (biophysical profile) and OB said the ultrasound was "perfect." I am GD, so not totally surprised baby is measuring big. Overall he was in the 85%tile and his head and belly were in the 97%tile. fyi - I'm not a big person - I have gained a total of 9 pounds since my first appt and am 5ft. 3in. However, my three girls all came early... So it will be fun to see what happens with a boy! Looking forward to hearing about everyone's growth scans!

  • I had a growth scan at 31 weeks and my baby girl was measuring 4lbs exactly and 1 week ahead. She is measuring in the 60th percentile and her head is in the 90th. I have another appointment this week but I don't think they're doing another scan. My OB said she looked great and couldn't believe how much she was moving. She has short little legs just like her daddy. I can't wait to meet her!

  • I'm not going to have a growth scan per se because I had an ultrasound with MFM at 29 weeks. But, baby was measuring at the 56th percentile. Her legs were a bit long, just like mommy and daddy's
  • I had mine last week, at 32 weeks. I think the baby was measuring a week ahead of me, in the 80th percentile. Doctor said everything looks good. I go back every week now for a BPP bc of GD. We got to see him in 4D which was pretty cool!

  • I will be 34 weeks on Monday. We had a growth scan at 32 weeks where he was measuring 3 weeks ahead and already at 6 pounds!
  • I had a surprise scan at 29 weeks as I gained an "excessive amount of weight" (so says the report). Baby was measuring 3.3 pounds and 49 percentile. I am now scheduled for weekly scans starting week of April 4th because my BP has been on the high side my whole PG (but no proteins in urine) so they just want to check her out as we come to the end.

  • Curious as to whether growth scans are routine for you ladies? My last official scan was my anatomy scan. I've done a 3D at 28 weeks, but that was just for fun. As far as I know, there will be no other scans unless some issue arises.
  • I had a growth scan at 29w and my daughter was measuring 3#2oz (54%). Baby looked perfect, but it did show I have high amniotic fluid (my level was at 23) so I have a follow up ultrasound next week. I will also have NST's starting this week to make sure everything is going okay.

I did not expect a growth scan, but apparently they are becoming routine at my office around the 30th week. IMO, they are unnecessary.

The only reason I'm getting one is I was seeing a high risk doctor after some soft markers on my anatomy scan. The last time we saw them everything was fine, but the baby was in the 90th percentile, so they wanted to check him out again. I'm not going back to the MFM, but my doctor is going to do one since that's what they had planned to do.

Honestly, I hope she forgets. I'm afraid they're going to keep saying he is big, pressure me to induce, or try to convince me to have a c-section, none of which I want, but maybe I'm just paranoid....

  • I had one yesterday at 31 weeks and he was measuring 3lbs 10oz. I have one every 4 weeks and see high risk Doctor otherwise my last ultrasound would have been my anatomy scan at 20 weeks.

I'm having another scan on Wednesday (at almost 32 weeks) to check growth and also to have another look at her heart.  She had an echogenic intracardiac focus at our 21 week scan.  They aren't concerned but I guess they want to check everything out since it's a soft marker for DS.  I just hope it's gone and she's on target for growth.  Maybe we will get some 3-D shots if we're lucky!

update: baby girl was 4 lb. 8 oz. at almost 32 weeks (77th percentile)
  • I had one on Thursday at 33 weeks. Baby girl is measuring at 34 weeks and 3 days, and  in the 73rd percentile at 5 lbs 4 oz

My son was 9 lbs 13 oz at 39 weeks when he was born. So I'm hoping she is a little smaller than her brother!
  • I've had one every 4 weeks since 20 weeks and have my last one on Monday at 34 (now we see them every 2 weeks). Last time baby A was 4lbs 6oz and baby B was 3lbs 12oz. This will be our last one before our induction unless they are concerned about something, so I'm curious to see how accurate their weights will be.
  • I have them every 2 weeks right now and then soon move to weekly, but I see an MFM due to elevated bp prior to pregnancy. My bp has been the same the entire pregnancy (120/70) so it feels excessive, but it's the protocol and as long as it keeps me and baby safe I don't mind it. They only actually measure weight and height every 4 weeks right now, the other weeks they just check fluid levels etc.
  • In my Dr's office growth scans are not routine. I was measuring 3 weeks ahead at my last 2 appts so the dr ordered one. I went Thursday at 32w5d and baby was measuring almost 3 weeks ahead at 35w3d, 5lbs 8oz, 93rd percentile. I think I'll have another one in a couple weeks. I'm having a repeat c section so no real reason for the ultrasounds other than to tell me my baby might be big.

I recently had one. I was almost 32 weeks and LO was measuring about 34-35 weeks, at 4 lbs 12 oz. I'm hoping he's not too big because I started going through our baby clothes, we already have lots of NB stuff and haven't even had the shower yet.
  • I have biophysical profiles weekly at this point but they are only measuring his size every 4 weeks.  At our last growth scan (29weeks) he was measuring 4lbs 3oz which is above the 99% according to my you dr. I have gd with this pregnancy but since my 1st child was 10 lbs 5oz @38 weeks my dr expected this baby to be large as well.
  • I haven't had a growth scan, but at my 28 sonogram, LO measured approximately 2 pounds 11 ounces. According to the measuring tape check at 32 weeks, I'm measuring several weeks ahead.

My OB isn't really into giving out the baby stats, like percentiles and things like that. Is it the norm for your OBs to do so, or are you asking for that info?
  • We had a growth scan at 32 weeks, he's measuring in the 73rd percentile at 4lbs 10oz, not sure how many weeks ahead that puts me, they didn't say. I have another growth scan in 2.5 weeks. I have GD, gained 11 lbs, FTM. They tried doing 3D but he was uncooperative again, snoozing with his face in my placenta..

No growth scans for me and my doctor never gives me estimates or percentiles or anything. She's pretty conservative in that way. I think as long as my belly is measuring within the normal range and I'm not reporting any issues I won't be getting any additional sonograms either. Kind of disappointing but good that there's nothing to cause concern.
  • So my doctor hasn't planned anymore scans after the 20 week one in January, is this normal? I feel like everybody else is getting growth scans!

I asked my doctor if we would be having anymore ultrasounds, and he told me the anatomy scan was our last. Apparently my practice doesn't think third tri scans are medically necessary. I just get anxious sometimes wondering if baby boy is still doing okay in there.
  • I don't think they're typically standard unless you're measuring ahead or behind or have a condition that requires additional monitoring of the baby's growth/health.
  • I'm noticing almost everyone posting is going back for growth scans because their babies are on the larger side, or at an above-average percentile...I was only supposed to have my 10&20 week scans, went in for the anatomy scan and they told me that the baby had some dilation of the kidneys (hydronephrosis). They wanted to see me at 32 weeks to check the kidneys again. At my 32 week scan, they said that he still has hydronephrosis and that he is only in the 20th percentile, so I'm going back at 36 weeks for another scan to check his growth. The 36 week scan is scheduled for April 5th and I'm anxious to see if the hydronephrosis has resolved itself and to see if he's on track for his growth.
  • I was sent for a growth scan for being AMA and GD. My OB said maybe another scan at 37 weeks. I think he ordered it more for the BPP than growth... As he says, on paper everything looks great, but because of my age, it never hurts to get more information than the routine prenatal visits which are just listening to heartbeat and a fundal height. In my previous pregnancies, I never had an ultrasound after 20 weeks. Yea for being old?!?
  • I have read that "growth scans" at this point in the pregnancy have a 15% margin of error and are not totally accurate in terms of weight. I am more excited to get to see LO and what position he is on Friday.
  • 32 week ultrasound seemed standard at my MFM. I went at 20 weeks and all was well and he wanted me to schedule a visit at 32 weeks. Since then I've developed PIH so I'm looking forward to see how my little one is growing. PIH can cause slow growth. Will know on Friday!

I only got an (optional!) dating scan at 8 wks, declined the NT, and then had an anatomy scan at 20 weeks...no more ultrasounds for me unless something is wrong or they can't figure out what position baby is in.

  • @allisonmunson94 Try not to worry even if the hydronephrosis is still present. My son's didn't go away until he was 18 months old. He had a sonogram after he was born, and then every 6 months after that. His was fairly severe and he had actual reflux on one side after he was born (that they saw in a procedure called a VCUG), and they monitored him closely for UTIs, but he never got one, and it never caused any problems except unnecessary worrying.

  • My little one is 4 lbs. 3 ounces at 30 weeks 1 day. She is measuring in the 90th percentile and 3 weeks ahead. My doctor isn't concerned about her being too large until they are reaching 98% and higher. She says babies can go through growth spurts and then level off. My first was born 2 weeks early at 6 pounds 15 oz. So maybe this one will be a little early too...I'm a little worried about having a larger baby
  • Growth scans are standard with my OB between 30-32 weeks and 37 weeks. I had a growth scan at 32+3. Baby was estimated at 4lbs13oz which they said put her in the 71st percentile but they didn't tell me what that means in terms of measuring ahead.
  • Well, I had one at 32 weeks and the baby was in the 8-10th percentage at 3 pounds 9 ounces. Now I have to go rice weekly to the dr plus to a perinatal for a high tech ultra sound to ensure she is just small and that there are no issues within the placenta.

I am 32 weeks and had an apt yesterday with no mention of a growth scan. Is this not always a standard? Seems most of you will or have already had one.
  • I'm high risk (type 1 diabetes) so I'm going for ultrasounds every 3 weeks so they can monitor baby size, placenta and amniotic fluid. I was there two weeks ago (31 weeks) and baby was measuring at around 4 ibs. They seemed happy with the growth and indicated no concerns. I go again next week so we'll see how much of a change there is next time.

  • I've been having growth scans every 2-3 weeks since the 19th week(and blood flow scans weekly lately) due to VCI. She's measuring at 2lbs 15 oz as of 29 weeks + 2 days, which put her at the 20th percentile. A relief as she'd been less than 10th percentile and two weeks behind just 2 weeks prior.
  • Growth scans are just normally with higher risk pregnancies and also over 35.
  • I just had my growth scan this morning and I am 31+4 days pregnant. She is apparently in the 97th percentile and already 5 pounds! I really am hoping that she is not going to be too massive!!!
  • I am having a growth scan on Monday (33w4d). They are not routine for my practice, but I had elevated AFP on my quad screen, and since everything checked out with the scan following that, they want to be sure it wasn't an indicator that the placenta is crappy, which can cause the elevation as well.
  • I had one yesterday at 34+1 and baby is 5lbs. I forgot to ask percentile and I can't recall what DS1 was at this point.
