Aww thanks. I have been very vocal that I am not, and never will be, a victim and instead consider myself and all others who have lived through assault survivors. I beat myself up for so many years for not reporting the assault and for "allowing" myself to be in that situation until I realized that I can either be burdened everyday and let the assailant have even more power or I can move forward and take back that power. In a weird way, I think it helps that I look like a cream puff doormat, but when needed, I can bust sh*t up! I didn't let what was done to me change me, just bring out a different side. I still smile at strangers and strike up conversations with people I don't know in the grocery store. I just trust my intuition a lot more and have confidence that I can bring the pain as needed. And as for the dickhead who tried to attack me with a gun and ended up with a couple broken digits, he was lucky he was whimpering and didn't fight back too much or I would've had to bring out the big punches and perform some testicular torsion.
Just as an observation, I find it interesting that so many of you in the U.S. have said that you don't know anyone (or only know a few people) who actually own guns. I wonder if it's a regional thing (I grew up in the deep South where a lot of people hunted and nearly everyone I knew owned some type of gun.) or whether a lot of the people you know and interact with regularly carry guns or have them in their homes and you just don't know about it. Or maybe the people in your circles really don't have them. Most of my friends and co-workers probably have no idea that I carry a handgun daily because it stays locked in my car at work (per our corporate policies), and I don't go around talking about it unless the topic happens to come up. Maybe it's the sociologist in me, but it makes me wonder what the actual numbers are vs. what the perception of the actual numbers are...

I was thinking the same thing. I live in Wisconsin. DH and I have 7 guns (rifles, shotguns, handguns) between the 2 of us. We both hunt. Most of my friends have guns. A lot of my co-workers hunt. I would say the majority of the people I interact with have guns. But I am thinking it is a regional thing since deer and duck hunting is very popular around here.
My dad hunts, and has my whole life, but I've never known where the guns were if he wasn't prepping to go hunting or just back from it. Since DH & I live in the top half of the duplex my parents own, with them on the bottom, this thread has reminded me that I should probably find out where my dad keeps his gun.
My problem is a bit different in that DH is a sword collector. Not wallhangers, but functional, sharp swords. We're still not quite sure the best way / place to store them in is - right now they're in the closet in what will become baby's room, so obviously they can't stay there much longer.
Our baby room has been my husband's storage room. When I was going through it, I found a bunch of fireworks just sitting in the closet that he found in the park this summer after July 4. I was like, "um, these definitely shouldn't be in the baby's room, but can we also just not have random stray fireworks in our house at all?" Realizing he probably still hasn't done anything about this yet...

Yeah, the other day my son was holding something and I took it from him asking where he got it. He said "From Dada's pants!" (there was a pile of dirty laundry by the basement stairs). I looked at what he had and sure enough it was MH's Leatherman utility knife! Thankfully, my son didn't know how to open it but MH still got quite an earful about how we can't have certain things just lying around!
I definitely think it's a regional thing. I live in Oklahoma and I honestly can't think of any friends that don't have at least one gun. It's so commonplace here I never even think about it. Also growing up with a dad who liked guns, I learned at a very young age how dangerous a gun can be and how to properly handle one if situation called for it. When I was old enough to stay home alone/baby sit a younger sibling is when I learned to shoot the .22 rifle and learned where it was kept. Just in case. It made me feel good to not have to worry or think what if.

I live in Wisconsin too. Deer hunting is like a holiday around here. I don't know too many people that don't have guns. I never pictured myself having guns in my home, but my husband enjoys shooting for fun and used to go hunting when he was younger, so we have several hand guns & rifles. We are planning on getting a gun safe and my husband never has the guns loaded. He is very big on gun safety also and plans on teaching our child about gun safety at a young age. My parents actually had guns while we growing up, but kept them out of sight and didn't use them ever in front of us.
I live in the South and pretty much everyone I know has guns. My DH has a small collection of old tiimey guns (WWII era, he's a big history buff), and he has a pump action shot gun and a handgun. He has no ammo for the old timey guns, and doesn't keep the other two guns loaded. I personally am very uncomfortable around guns, even though he has showed me how to load them and I've shot them. I haven't thought about his guns and having the baby here, but I'm sure we will be getting a safe to store them in soon!
When I lived alone I had a big knife and a taser I kept on my nightstand. I used to carry pepper spray too. I live in a small town that never has much crime, but I'm still paranoid about people breaking into our house and I'm glad DH has guns for protection, but hopefully we will never need to use them!
Side note, I live in a rural area with lots of wildlife. A few months back, there was a man and his teenage son that hit a black bear on the side if the road one night. They got permission to go look for the bear the next day and kill it if it was still alive. Well these guys are hunters, but they took a handgun with them instead of rifles. Stupid stupid stupid! They found the bear, it was wounded and charged them. It took I think 8+ shots to stop the bear. The bear turned out to be the largest ever caught in our state. As nervous around guns as I am, I definitely prefer to have them out in the woods! (Moral of this story, don't hunt a wounded bear with a handgun, those guys were lucky!)
