Working mommas - as we approach our due dates

Re: Working mommas - as we approach our due dates

  • My plan is to work right up to going into labor. I have an office job, so it's a lot easier on my body than nursing and other professions.

I was so relieved to hear at my birth class that only 10% of labors begin with the bag of waters breaking. I plan on having some towels in my vehicle just in case though. Ugh, that would be mortifying, but I'm not going to sit at home for a couple weeks just to avoid that.

This is way I will save time for leave and still have PTO for the end of the year.

  • I plan on working until I start labor. I haven't been at my job for a year and therefore don't qualify for FMLA. Luckily my job is physically quite easy. And by May the semester will be almost over and I doubt I will have any requests to teach classes, which is the most physically challenging part.

  • My plan was to try to work until the baby came, but now that it's closer, I will probably leave a week early.  For 3 reasons - 1, if this is anything like DS, I'm just going to be miserable and will like a little downtime before the crazy; 2, DS was about 5 days early, and if this baby is early, I don't want my water to break while I'm here (though it still could); and 3, I looked at my work calendar and there are a bunch of ridiculous monthly meetings scheduled for that week, and I have zero intention on attending them 39.5 weeks pregnant (sorry not sorry).

I am allowed more than the 12 weeks, though.  If that weren't the case I would probably try to stick it out.

@loveymay it really depends on your dr office. Mine has the opinion that if I say I can't do something-they believe me... If I leave work early it will be under a short term disability claim for "pregnancy complications" and have to be medically justified (exhaustion due to pregnancy insomnia, severe back pain, dehydration, pre-term labor, decreased  fetal movement associated w/stress etc). If I feel good all the way to my due date then great!! -but I found out my first Tri that pregnancy wasn't the time to push myself (severe morning sickness w/a few IV's etc)

  • I'm work for an amazing company that offers 4 weeks 100% paid leave BEFORE your due date (use it or lose it) and a 6 month maternity leave. I'm due on May 7th and my last day in the office will be April 8th; I'll return to work in late October. I can't WAIT to get the heck out of there. Everything huuuuurts.
Is this an American company? And, seriously, are they hiring? Regardless, this is incredible! I thought I had it easy working at a school and leaving the Friday before April break and only coming back in September. Of course, I am only going to be paid for 26 days from PTO that I have saved up so that is kind of a whomp whaaaaa. But I really can't complain!

I am also a teacher and have had three babies. For my first I worked Thursday, went into labor early the next day on Friday. For my second I worked Friday and went into labor 2 days later on Sunday. For the third, I was at work when my water broke. I just made adjustments for how I felt - sitting or standing - whatever kept me comfortable!
I'm a teacher too and that was my main reason for taking time before the baby- I didn't want my water to break in front of the kids!
Luckily it was just a slow "leak" and baby's head was like a plug, so I was able to leave and drive home without anyone knowing, except my principal. I did have a towel in the car to sit on!!!
  • I had planned to work up until labor with DS but my blood pressure went up at 39 weeks. They did a repeat check and it was still up but no other pre e concerns. My midwives ended up recommended I stop working to take it easy and once I did my blood pressure went back to normal consistently until I went into labor. It's just a lot of stress on our bodies in the end and that's what I needed, so staying open in the end was important.

  • As of my appointment this morning I am slightly dilated so I will have to go on modified bed rest if dilate any more. Luckily I can make arrangements to work from home until the time comes, but I really don't want to give up the time I will desperately need with my two babies.

T&Ps @khochanadel that those babies stay in and cook as long as possible! If you do need to leave work earlier than planned, can you qualify for short-term disability so it doesn't cut into your maternity leave? That's what I did when I needed to be on bedrest.

I'm not 100% sure but this place is pretty generous, my boss is super understanding and flexible, and we have open vacation policy so I can always take "vacation" time too. Most of my work I would be able to do from bedrest, but I *really* hope it doesn't come to that. I will go bonkers if I have to lie in bed all day.

Sorry for prying here because I don't know crap all about how his is supposed to go...was there a reason you were checked already? My OB isn't checking my cervix yet...thought that started around 36 weeks based around other info I've seen around the boards.

    Yes. Because I'm having twins.

Well that makes much more sense! Sorry to hear you're on semi bed rest though...lucky you can at least work from home! Hopefully you don't dilate much more (or any more) over the next few weeks until those babies are fully cooked!

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I didn't need to make a new post for it. Just felt like venting and sharing with my Bump mommas. So originally I had thought I would leave work early because of my condition, my pains and how my body feels while at work.. which is still mostly my reason for doing so. BUT this morning my dreaded co-worker and I (who usually ends up in my twatwaffle Tuesday posts) we got into it this morning and I have realized how completely done with her I am... and this place. I literally cannot stand this woman and she has put my stress level through the roof already and its barely 9am. For that reason, along with how achy and sore I am during the day here at work I plan to start my leave by 39 weeks which is about the 9th of May I believe. That's IF I make it even that long. I just hope and pray I'm not one who stays pregnant until I'm 42 weeks. I want as much time with LO as possible but I also want to keep my sanity and not snap at work and cause or LO un-needed stress. I'm praying I give birth around 37 weeks but that's wishful thinking. I just want out of this place so bad. I plan on looking for other jobs while on maternity leave as well.
  • @kp90 I was having very similar thoughts all morning! I think it was just the perfect storm of crap being slung my way and having had a wonderful experience working with the exact same age group in a completely different district on Monday that made me see how f-ed up my school is. It really does do a number on you when you have un-needed stress at work and I know I have been feeling horrible all week and soooo tired and it is because work is wearing me down. You gotta take care of you and that baby and while it sucks to imagine cutting short time once LO is born, sometimes taking time while you are sore and aching is the best bet. You never know when LO will actually come so you need to really focus on you and how you are feeling. Creepy hugs to you and just try not to kill anyone today! That is what I have been repeating to myself all morning so I figured it might help you too.

  • Starting towards the end of April I'm cutting my hours back from 10hrs/day to 6-8 hours a day. I plan on working up until I go into labor. I'm on my feet most of the day but my supervisor allows me to sit as much as needed. We finally found someone to cover for me while I'm gone as well so he will be trained well before its time to go and makes it easier to cut back my shifts. If I have to I can work half days without being penalized on vacation time or maternity leave. I'm just worried that if I took my leave early, I would go one to two weeks past my EDD and lose all the extra time I could have with LO.

@laurenmdrn16 Thank you! creepy hugs back to you ;) but girl... omg... my day has become so much WORSE since I posted that and I didn't think it was possible. That co-worker of mine up and left for the day and no one told me until its 12:10 (I'm suppose to go to lunch at 12 but she wasn't back yet) so I go looking for her and the clerk told me... "Oh she left for the day" so I lost my cool. I had 10 minutes to eat my lunch and get back before the next set of patients. They are going to put me into labor and they are NOT worth it but I cant control my stress here at work!! I just want to cry.

That is soooo not cool! Yeah, you need to put YOU first and screw that horrible co-worker. I am so sorry you are dealing with that on top of everything else. Keep taking deep breaths and breaks when you can. Hoping for a smoother rest of the day!

  • I worked all the way up to my due date with oldest and then he came about 4 days late.  Felt fine the whole time.  Really had no problems.  With my daughter/second I worked until my due date, but I was wishing I had taken the week before off.  I was tired and sore, but I'm a teacher and we had a sub shortage in my district that year.  I didn't want to make my co-workers cover for me if they didn't have to.  This time I'm already tentatively planning on taking that week ahead off.
