I agree that reforming the system is important, starting with the ways that we approach serving/educating the poor and underprivileged. The vast majority of kids, rich or poor, would choose not to be in school. The difference is whether the parents are involved/available to make sure their kids go to school and get the education that will help them succeed.
@y0urm0m I completely agree. There just aren't enough resources period. for parents, students, or teachers. Every day I go to work in hopes to be that one person for the one student that makes them believe in themselves.
Edit - I didn't see your optional comment the first time - I don't think its a solution, but I do think their needs to be other options other than High School for them.
And I must say - being completely honest - I don't know if I would be a teacher today if I knew the education system would be how it is currently

Yes there are lots of poverty stricken families that probably rely on incomes from older children that can work... but what a terrible burden to place on those teenagers that basically says your future isn't as important as your minimum wage paycheck.

I don't believe it's the schools fault, but their (student's) environment. Which leads back to finding alternative resources to help aid in their education.

People who don't vacation, travel, go in the sunshine, etc with their babies/toddlers....weird me out. I have several friends that wont vacation, go to the grocery store, go out to dinner, etc....unless they have a sitter for their kid. How is a child suppose to learn what is acceptable behavior in a public place, if they are never taken out? I get having date nights, or going on a kid-free vacation, but I have several friends that have avoided bringing their kids anywhere because they feel that it is "too much work", that they have never taken their kids anywhere really.....and now just the thought of it is stressful. Ummm...no thanks. I would rather teach my child how to behave and what is expected of her while out in public, so we can have a life outside of the house (with her, without her, and as a family). Don't harp on me for having a life and doing fun sh*t, when you choose to keep your child in a "lets not go anywhere because its too much work" bubble.

I love old people! I used to hate old people until I started working at an elder law nonprofit and I was representing old people in elder abuse restraining order. My clients were hilarious and so grateful. I really miss the clients and have serious regrets about leaving that job.
My UO is that when people say they're throwing their own baby shower it doesn't bother me at all. Even though I wouldn't do it, I'm not gonna call you out on it because it doesn't affect me in any way. What DOES bother me is when people say that they're throwing their own baby shower but then try to bolster their opinion by putting down traditionalist or people who have different opinions from them. Who cares if people don't agree with you. I get annoyed when people get crazy defensive about it. Just own it.
I think the topic of schools is really interesting and its intrigued me for years now. As a freshman, I dropped out to work but was later "recruited" by a dropout recovery specialist from a local alternative school. The school changed my life. Almost everyone that attended had jobs, so the schedule accommodated for that. There wasn't an emphasis on sports and a list of a million rules like the other schools I went to, there was just a code of honor. Everyone there chose to be there, so the learning environment was different. I ended up getting crazy scholarships to go to college and found two of the best jobs I've ever had through my network there. I think as many have said, its a lack of resources, but also what works for some kids doesn't work for all of them. I so badly wish there were more schools like the one I graduated from, because it probably didn't just make my life a million times better, but save it.

Going off of this - My parents included us in everything growing up. They rarely went out without us. My friends whose parents went out mostly with their friends tend to be more limited in the scope of what they will eat. It could be coincidence but my brother, sister and I are not picky eaters at all and I think part of this was exposure.

That is super weird to me! Murph and I travel so much and I think it is awesome for him. We leave for Disney Sunday and this is one of a handful of times DH is coming with us. I am excited to let him help on the plane
People, travel with your kids! It is harder but think of all the memories and it is good for the kids. It might be a bit harder but I truly wouldn't change it. Plus the first day back from vacation to kid sleeps for like 24 hours. It is glorious

Before taking DD on our first trip, I was terrified. I couldn't sleep thinking about the 12-14 hours traveling, lugging around all the baby stuff, the airplanes and layovers, the 5 hour time change, etc. She was so good the whole time we traveled, adjusted fine to the schedule change, and we had the best time! It was a PITA at some points (like that blowout diaper on the plane), but worth it for the memories. My parents were selfish jerks that never took us anywhere. JK, but for some reason I remember all the times they went on vacation without us. Anyway, I know parents need their own time apart and I'm all for it, but my goal is at least 2 family vacations a year. One big one and one smaller road trip.
As a truancy officer I completely disagree that there should not be mandatory schooling. I don't know if you specifically mean for high school or all ages but regardless a majority of my case load is full of students who are not attending due to their environment and their parents. I can't tell you how many kids stay home because mom had a baby and they need to be home to care for the child. A vast majority of my students DO want an education.
Also everyone feels they are underpaid and over worked. I'm a social worker, I work as a truancy officer and as a therapist for children who have either been sexually abused or expierenced childhood maltreatment. I have my masters in social work and have been in the field for many years. My younger sister is a first year 4th grade teacher and makes 10,000 a year more than I do. Every profession feels underpaid.

I think vocational schools are a great option. And teachers that aren't burnt out and are still able to be empathetic and involved. Which is hard, I get it. I've worked in inner city public schools, I've worked in private small town schools, I've worked with kids in the juvenile justice system. Kids are hard, period. As teachers it's our job to care about our students, try to understand where they're coming from, and help them find the best track through the educational system. Pursuing a 4 year degree may not be the best option for all kids, but all kids deserve to be given that option and encouraged to try that track by teachers and educators who want to see them succeed and aren't just writing them off because they're poor/underprivileged/shitty teenagers.
I finally thought of a UO! I'm sick of people feeling entitled to the best of everything. I am so happy to be a homeowner, but we made sacrifices to afford it. I've mentioned many of them in the budgeting thread. Anyway, this girl on my FB is complaining because even though her husband makes a TON of money (she brags about it a lot), they're having a hard time getting a house in the area they like. Well, you drive a brand new luxury car, go out all the time, buy new clothes weekly and that's just what we see on the Internet. If you can afford everything you want in life, good for you. But most of us have to pick and choose our priorities and complaining about making a lot of money and still not having everything makes you look like a brat.
Ha! @elenabrent I pretended to be a Duke fan when I was younger because I thought it was fun to piss everyone off. Now, my husband claims to be a Carolina fan but he's not an active one. We live right around the corner from Wake Forest and god bless 'em, they just stink at most things but we enjoy going to their football games. And I just hate NC State because I had a shitty ex-BF who graduated from there..andplusalso, they stink.

My family is full of people who care too much about Carolina basketball but I went to HS right around the corner from Duke, so most of my friends from home are Duke fans. I love them, but we don't talk about basketball. This year when Carolina played Duke the second time my Ovia animal of the week was a chinchilla so I spent the whole game muttering about how Coach K and one of their players have stupid chinchilla faces. And then I realized how happy I was to be back in the South, because when I yelled shit like that at the TV in Baltimore everyone looked at me like I'd lost my damn mind.
@mckcak23 that was me. Under the fruit/size comparison that changes weekly you can choose to see weird but cute animals, French bakery items, random toys, or fruits & vegetables. The weird but cute animals are fun, but this baby was a rodent for a LONG TIME.
@mckcak23 I look at all the options every week, just to get a good idea of what the size is (because apparently this baby can be both simultaneously the size of a grapefruit and a nalgene bottle and that's confusing).
@elenabrent I do too! I have mine set to toys but when the toy is boring or stupid, I change it. This week the "toy" is a hat and the animal is a "weasel" so I'm going to go with the food category until next week!
I'm late to this post but I cringed at the comment about education. Yes I get it not every school year is a sister act movie but I do believe teachers make a difference. Maybe not in a span of 10 months, but if you show them you care, that they are worth it even when they can't even think it themselves somewhere along the course of life it will pay off. Humble brag warning, last week I received a message on Facebook from a student I thought in 2010-2011, she's now 21 and was writing to thank me for believing in her. Does it happened every day: heck no, does it make the job easier no, but did it felt warm and fuzzy in my heart yes! Because she was one difficult student that a lot of people would have call a lost cause.
like some PP said if you don't think school can make a difference you shouldn't be teaching, period.
Ill finish with this, I've visited countries where school is not mandatory and guess where are the poor kids, in the street, begging and stealing. Why? Because they bring more money home this way. At least from 8-2 kids are in a safe environment and getting thought how to live in society. (And yes being fed too!)
