What's wrong with Motrin for teething?

Is there an issue with using Motrin for teething and if so, what is it? Someone told me it isn't safe?? Yet it's the best thing to help LO be more comfortable? What's the deal with it - sorry I'm a FTM and dreading teething coming up - just wondering why there is some hesitation for using Motrin for some people?

Re: What's wrong with Motrin for teething?

  • It's not safe for babies under 6 months. But I would ask your ped just to be safe.

  • i think it is due to the impact on the liver (or maybe its kidneys)....under 6 months ibuprofen can do harm. once they hit 6 months thought most pediaitricians will OK ibuprofen. i agree it works a lot better than tylonel for teething.....we have 4 days until we are 6 months and i am counting the days! it is ear infection central over here and with my older kids, ibuprofen always provided much more relief.
  • Agree with PP, most pedi's give the OK after 6 months! I'm a FTM but it seemed like all the kids that were brought in our ER with fevers responded much better to Motrin than Tylenol! I think it also works better for pain/discomfort (at least it does for me)!
