Moms: When did your baby smile & how obvious was it?

We think Cal is on the verge of smiling...he's been smiling in his sleep since the beginning, but I'm talking an awake/alert smile.  It just seems to be lurking and ready to make an appearance.  In fact, there have been a couple of times where it seemed that he did but we couldn't be sure.  Did you go through the same thing and when s/he really did, was it unmistakable that it was a smile and not a random mouth movement that looked like a smile??  If so, how were you sure?

  • Ella was 6 weeks and it was VERY clearly a smile haha.  Before that she would smirk but it wasn't like a real real smile!!!

  • ronnie was the 1st one, it was august 5th (am i dork for remembering the date, haha) so lets see he was 12 weeks actual, 5 weeks adjusted age..

it was VERY obvious with him, it kind of freaked me out, because his face looked totally different when he smiled. i will never forget that feeling :)

he only did it a few times for the next few weeks..then it was non stop :)

joey was not as obvious..like i don't have an exact date for him, just because there were a lot of "was that it?" moments..

for the couple of weeks before they smiled, there was a definite time when i knew it was coming soon..you could look at their faces and just read happiness without a smile, like i could just see in their eyes..

  • I think Aaron was around 6 weeks.  Before that he smiled in his sleep or when he passed gas.  Now he smiles all the time, coos and squeaks.  It's super cute.  I think when he smiles you'll know it for sure.

It's so hard to catch on camera too!  I try all the time.

  • Ben started smiling at like 2-3 weeks and I swear it wasn't just a sleepy smile. It was at 4 weeks when he was smiling all the time.
  • Just started about a week and a half to 2 weeks ago - it is HILARIOUS - his whole face lights up in this jubilant grin, big open wide smiling mouth, crinkled eyes - so cute - you will die.
    Wheee!

  • Smiled, no gas, no fluke, but tickled him and smiled, about 6 weeks. He did it once before then, but I was able to keep it going at 6 weeks and get it on camera.
  • About 7-8 weeks when he smiled in response to us. It was a little sooner that he smiled, but for reasons known only to him!

  • It was 6 weeks here, too. They just looked at me and smiled a big, beautiful smile, with their eyes staring up at me. Gorgeous!
  • If we were talking to my son while he was awake at about a month, he would smile.  Probably at the sound of our voices.  It was the cutest thing and I was able to capture it on camera.

  • We have early smilers -- both were 3-4 weeks.  Both were obvious because we were talking to them and making faces on more than one occasion.  Ryan's is really definate because he LOVES when you raise your eyebrows at him.  Audrey is harder to figure out and is still hit and miss.
