Diagnosed with gestational diabetes FTM

I found out yesterday I failed the 3 hour glucose test and my doc said I'm "very" diabetic, with some of my levels being 300. She's referring me to a high risk doc, and told me to drink a lot of water and watch my carb intake until I see a nutritionist. I'd like to hear from some other moms on this--have you tested positive as a FTM? or have you had it with past pregnancies? I'm trying not to let the news scare me, but naturally I'm worried, and I especially don't want a C-sec (I'm 30w).

  • I'm a type 1 diabetic and therefore have been high risk for both of my pregnancies. Having 10 weeks left isn't so bad. Water and exercise are your friend. Those are the best and most natural ways to lower your blood sugar.  Your new high risk doctor will set guidelines for where he wants your blood sugar to be and when. Just try your best. Most veggies are card free as long as they're not starchy. Fruit is fine as long as it's whole pieces of fruit. Juice is terrible because it's liquid sugar. Good luck.

  • I'm a FTM with GD. It sucks a lot. I hate doing the finger pricks 4 times a day and finding foods to eat. My blood sugar goes through the roof if I eat any potatoes at all, so I've had to completely cut those out (I know it's a lot of carbs, but I figured if I did small portions I could eat it). I was already eating snacks at most of the snack times anyways except the bedtime snack. I track all the food I eat on myfitnesspal to keep track of my carbs for my meals.

I've been diagnosed with GD for a month now, been tracking ketones, blood sugar, and food for a little over 3 weeks. I had 2 appointments with the gestational dietitian and she said I didn't have to come back, but now I changed OB's and offices, and they were talking about me meeting with a dietitian again even though it's the same hospital. My blood sugar levels have been within range most of the time, a couple of spikes when I deviated from my routine meal times or ate too many carbs, so nothing I didn't expect. The part that scares me the most is this developing into type 2 diabetes after the baby is born or getting it within 5-10 years (50% chance :(). My last OB was very pushy about inducing me early also which I didn't like. I'm not on any insulin meds, I'm managing through my diet and a little exercise.
Good luck to you @jessib899 . It's certainly a time consuming change and it's been difficult for me to accept.
