Question for ladies in FL

i know Zika has been discussed in regards to travel plans but I just switched OBs and the opinion I got went from "just wear bug spray, you're fine since it's not being contracted in the us from mosquitos yet" to "we don't think anyone should travel there".  But we leave in a few weeks so i am so on the fence about this.

what are your OBs saying you should be doing to protect yourselves?  One friend said she just needs to wear Off Deep Woods if she's outside in shorts. I'd love to hear what your docs are saying since you live there.

I live in Florida (Tampa area )and my doctors have no concern about it here. They are not telling me to cover up or wear bug spray. I wouldn't worry!

  • @katie121209 - thanks!  I think they're being overly cautious because as he put it "if you do contract it and ultrasounds show the head not developing properly there is nothing we can do about it".  Yeah, but still there are NO cases of it being contracted here!  I know this is "just a vacation" but it's not one i want to give up for absolutely no reason other than people being to scared to let patients go away.
  • I live in South Florida, about 45 minutes north of Miami. My OB recommended to wear bug spray, especially during the hours of high activity with mosquitoes. To try to cover up as much as I can, however it being Florida and hot, she said whatever was exposed to make sure I had bug spray on. If possible, to just try not to go out during times of high activity.

They have been spraying a lot for mosquito control, so there is an effort to keep the population down. It hasn't rained much which helps a lot. Just make sure you wear bug spray and if you can help it stay inside in the evenings and early morning hours. Enjoy your vacation!

  • I live in northern Fl and my OB isn't concerned at all.  Its not full on mosquito season yet but just trying to stay covered and use spray is what I plan to do.

Also most populated areas spray regularly.  Unless you are visiting like the everglades and going on a swamp ride, most city areas (like Disney) really wont have a ton of bugs.

  • @ThisisNumber3 - thanks. We'll be staying at a resort in Palm Beach. I may even call and ask the resort if they've been spraying.
  • I'm going to FL next week for Easter and I haven't even mentioned it, or thought to mention it, to my OB - I guess I'm not concerned about it.  I also heard recently that now they're thinking it's not actually coming from mosquitoes, but from a pesticide to kill that strain of mosquitoes that seeped into the water and the women were getting the virus drinking the water.  There are way too many conspiracies out there right now to even conclude that any one thing is causing this, and not one case has been contracting within the U.S.  I wouldn't worry about it.
