Shipping milk?

Hi everyone! I'll be traveling at the end of the month without my baby and husband so am trying to figure out the milk situation. I have been pumping extra sessions in order to have enough frozen milk for the first day or two of four away, but after that I think I'll have to overnight milk back home.

Does anyone have experience doing this? I've found some tutorials involving dry ice etc but I'm actually leaning toward using the service "Milk Stork" - it's pricey but when I think about the cost of dry ice and DIY overnight shipping across the country I think it's only a slight increase in price for what seems like less of a hassle. Has anyone used this company?

Last question - I've read the TSA guidelines on getting milk through security, but am curious if anyone has experience doing so when you weren't physically with your baby and whether you had any issues. I suppose I could check a cooler bag but I'd rather just carry it on if possible.

Re: Shipping milk?

  • I ship milk to the milk bank I donate to.  They coordinate everything and use a company called Periship.  I was surprised they just use a cooler, no dry ice.  The instructions were also very specific to get the cooler as full as possible and stuff any open areas with tightly packed paper.
If it was me I would use a company that specializes in shipping perishable items, instead of a DIY solution, for the piece of mind my milk will get there safely.

  • Thanks @MargaretC5, appreciate the thoughts. I think it sounds like pretty similar shipping containers.
  • Hey I'm also traveling for work at the end of the month, @phyllisnefler and I EBF. I didn't even think about the option to overnight milk (though I'm sure that can't be cheap, especially since I'll be all the way out on the west coast for three days/three nights.

As as for TSA, I've been reading up on this because I'll need to bring back at least some of what I pump (whatever I can manage to freeze or refrigerate while there) and I've read you should bring a small amount (maybe 1 oz) in one bottle so that they see there is some breastmilk there (and of course the other bottles you'll pump into on the way can be empty.)

Interested in any other tips you or anyone else might have! I've had a lot of anxiety about traveling and being away from my son/ making sure there's enough for him here while I'm away/pumping on an airplane/storing milk safely/getting it home to LO...

For the TSA concerns, maybe a call to the airline you're flying with would help? If you explain your situation, I'm sure you'd be able to find someone who would help you figure it out. GL!
