postpartum supplies

Hi all,
Just want to make sure I have everything I will need in the house for when I come home from the hospital.  I remember with my first the hospital gave me a lot of supplies to take home but that only lasted so long.  What are other people stocking up on for their recovery?

  • I found this post-delivery survival kit on Lucie's List and it looks pretty thorough!

  • I'm planning on doing a big shopping trip soon to buy extra toiletries so I don't have to for a while (just normal stuff - hair products, toothpaste, etc) I also plan to buy circumcision supplies (gauze, petroleum jelly...) I remember my husband going out to buy that stuff when we brought our first son home. And yes, wine. Lol
  • With my first, I remember being so paranoid about bleeding through onto my bed. I took some of the square pad things they had at the hospital (the ones they lay underneath you).i was so glad to have these on hand the first few days. The hospital really gave me a lot of the things mentioned. I left with a doughnut to sit on, witch hazel pads, a peri bottle and a few other things. I never ran out of what they have me. So, don't fee pressure to buy everything (although maybe it depends on the hospital)
  • Everything everyone else said plus earth mama angel baby nipple butter, Epsom salts for bath soaks, stool softener/miralax/Metamucil (take your pick!), and.....snacks!

This list is awesome! I know I have said this before, but the peri bottles were my very favorite thing in the whole entire world! I loved just squirting myself clean with nice warm water from the substantial, but not harsh spray. It was sooooooooo nice! Colace is another necessity, especially after a CS. As for the donut pillow, I actually used a Boppy and it worked fine (I got two, one new and one a hand-me-down so I was able to sit on one and use the other to hold my son). Basically, if you are sitting, you don't want all that pressure right on your perineum. Anything that redistributes your weight to your butt cheeks and thighs will do the trick. I was also obsessed with the witch hazel pads. I would put them in the fridge for some nice cooling relief and still use them with my hemorrhoids. So bascially, this list. The hospital will give you some of the stuff and don't be shy about filling up a bag (some hospitals provide little tote bags, but I would recommend bringing a reusable shopping bag or two to really load up on supplies!). But you will want a stock at home. I needed these items for a lot longer than I anticipated, especially since I had a CS and was in the hospital a lot longer anyways.

Dermaplast, tucks pads, ice packs, nursing pads (even if you don't nurse, you'll need to get through milk coming in), take out menus, snacks, a donut to sit on (or a spare boppy pillow), lots of bottled water, underwear you can throw out that are large, heavily absorbent pads, wine and Netflix!

I'm sure there are other things, but those were the first I thought of.
    And donuts to eat!
  • That kit on Lucies list is marked up like crazy. Looking at around $90 when most of the things will be provided by the hospital: Dermoplast, tucks pads, perineum squirt bottle, even disposable underpads that will protect your linen if you have a leak. You can also get the sitz bath tub from the hospital, if your swelling isn't that bad you may have to ask for it from the nurse. IMO a whole pack of depends is a bit excessive, I'm passing on that.

I'm a bit of a minimalist and for me, it'll be heavy pads, Epsom salt, nipple cream, hydrogel/ nipple soothies, and a binder. By the time I'm home, it'll be preferred to use warmth to encourage healing and circulation vs ice packs.

My favorite... Use this on your... use this to clean yerr... just.. use this.
  • Like PP's mentioned..Dermaplast spray (I had a really hard time finding it at the drug store), a soft ice pack for when milk is coming in, always infinity pads (these were so amazing when is had DS), snacks to eat during nursing sessions and basic household stuff. The last thing I want is to run out of toilet paper post partum!
  • I have started stocking up on a bunch of household supplies, really anything that you don't want to be stuck without and then have to run out and get. Toiletries for you and DH, I also bought a bunch of SOFT toilet paper (crunchy Scott feels like sandpaper after a vaginal birth) paper towels, napkins, paper plates, Always Infinity pads the orange ones for right after birth and then the green ones as things lighten up, obviously diapers/wipes. I like to aim for having enough "stuff" on hand to last at least a week without having to make a run to the store. Also, if you are having a boy and plan to circumcise (not debating anything!) you might need extra Vaseline for that.
  • I'll try to have toiletries stocked (toothpaste, toilet paper, etc...), as things like nipple balm/ ice packs..
Most of all: Snacks and lots of  precooked meals in freezer (if I ever manage to keep them frozen rather than eating them because I'm too lazy to cook during the week...)

  • Any other STM's use reusable pads? I notice a lot of mamas talk about throw away undies and pads but pre pregnancy I used reusables. Any change in the type of pad you needed to get/recommendations/can you freeze them?
  • Postpartum binder, Colace, large high-waist cotton underwear (post csection my regularly cut underwear landed directly on the incision which was very uncomfortable for months), Gatorade and bf boosting foods just in case, always infinity overnight pads, puppy training square pads (great for furniture to prevent blood stains if you bleed through), Advil, Tucks, Aquaphor. If I get my vbac, my hospital provides things like numbing agents and peri bottles. I also stocked up on basic household supplies like toilet paper, laundry detergent, paper towels, and made freezer meals last time and plan to do the same this time.
  • I haven't checked in in forever but hope everyone is doing well! I've been lurking and am excited to that all the babies are coming soon :)

I think I'm overstocking :)  But a few things I'll add to the lists -

Disposable plates and silverware - definitely

If you are nursing - A good water bottle with a straw.  PP dehydration can be real and you'll want to keep the water intake up to encourage your supply.  I say with a straw because it was awkward and a little difficult to drink from a glass or regular bottle when you are in some of the weird nursing positions.  So get your camelback ready :)

On that note - moisturizer.  I had bottles of lotions set up in different stations around the house (where I was nursing).

    Plenty of pads

Food - I'm going to try to make some freezer meals (they saved us last time) and have a good amount of snacks around - think about things you can eat with one hand!

Dog treats - It sounds silly, I know, but this was a big transition for our pup so I had his treats and then some special rawhide/bones around for rewards, for all the unfamiliar visitors to give to him, to keep him busy occasionally.

I had nipple butter, nursing pads, etc, on hand, but didn't use any of them.  I still have them laying around for this baby.  So, definitely have some, but don't spend too much $ until you know that you need them and what you like.

I'm also making sure I have plenty of household stuff around, but last time I went SO crazy stocking up on everything, and then 3 weeks in I found myself wishing that I needed something at Target as an excuse to leave the house :)  So be prepared but maybe not too prepared!

Random but maybe a cheap pair of flip-flops in a size up.  I know some of the moms (myself included) from my first BMB had their feet swell after the baby and it took a few months to get back to normal.  I had ended up sending my husband out for something for me to wear!

I LOVE YOU! I was thinking about disposable plates and silverware as I was conquering the mountain of dirty dishes in the sink. There is no way I am going to be able to keep on top of it while caring for an infant and toddler (especially since MH seems strangely adverse to cleaning dishes).
