I Regret Buying

  • I got a lot of hand me downs from my sister, so I didn't buy too much for DD. But I do regret all the maternity clothes I bought for myself!!! I must have bought 4 or 5 nursing bras and about 4 pairs of maternity pants and a few nursing shirts... I didn't end up breastfeeding and lived in my PP yoga pants and t-shirts/long sleeve t's that fit all the way to the end. I spent a few hundred dollars on all that and hated it and/or never wore it.
  • Receiving blankets. I got some at my baby showers & got some handed down to me. I think I've used one so far. Wtf do people even use them for?!
This is Baby #4 so we have a TON of receiving blankets. This is the first baby I've had with severe reflux so I now use all of those blankets as burp cloths. We go through them super fast. The regular sized burp cloths would be way too small and frankly, useless. However, I had pretty much made up my mind that I would be using the receiving blankets for this purpose this time around even before LO was born so that I wouldn't feel like they were a waste. Also, since I use them as burp cloths rather than blankets, it never matters whether the blanket is gender appropriate. So I use them whether they have trucks or flowers on them.
  • Our little guy has hated being swaddled from day one so besides the free swaddler from the hospital and one we got as a shower gift we use everything we have. My favorite things have been the free like new hand me down rock n play and a $160 baby swing that had been used twice and came with a year and a half warranty for only $40 that I found  on a local buy sell trade site on fb.

We were given a million kinds of blankets (seriously, 20+) and we use them for everything. We swaddle with them, use them as burp clothes, use them to change her on when we're out, as blankets in the car and I nurse under them.
We don't swaddle with the smaller ones anymore but DD was tiny tiny and the hospital ones were way too big so the smaller ones were perfect.

Oh so much stuff, bassinet used like 30mins here or there, swing for her to sleep in because bassinet didn't work,
baby monitor(I'm sure we'll use it eventually).
My son is 10 weeks and we just started using the baby monitor.  His crib is literally three feet from my side of the bed, but it's so nice having the camera baby monitor on my bedside table so I don't have to get out of bed to see if he is awake or not.
  • I wish I hadn't taken all of the tags off her clothes! The first two months she only slept in a long sleeved onesie with a light swaddle blanket around her tummy and legs because she would sweat in anything more than that! So many sleepers never got worn because they were too warm for her.

  • The diaper genie. Used it a couple of times, but it's not practical at all. I'm not a fan of having to shove an extremely wet or poppy diaper into the container with my hand. Ick.

  • I agree. Baby monitor was pointless, and the diaper genie got some use, but really, not worth the money.

Receiving blankets are a God-send for us. We mostly use them as burp clothes and for laying on the floor, etc. But my aunt got me a really really nice one - gauzy material and nice simple pattern, and it's just too damn nice to use for spit-up!

For my first daughter, I regretted the swing because she hated it, but for this one, I wish I still had the swing because she always has to be moving.

  • The Boppy and a bottle warmer. We ended up just using warm water from our Keurig poured into a big mug. That lasted until I realized she would have a bottle straight out the fridge.
  • We were gifted the diaper pail two pack so right now one is in his room and one is in mine. It keeps my dogs from exploring dirty diapers so it's worth it for us. We just got a monitor b/c DS is a light napper. I can get him down and sleeping in his rnp but I can't move it or he will wake up so it lets me do stuff in the other room while he naps

we just bought a second bouncy chair because it was annoying carrying the one back and forth to my moms house. We will probably get about two months worth on that.

The boppy was great for the first 2 weeks, now I have no idea what to do with the thing!
  • Sadly, this baby is our last.  Because I just got buying for baby down to a science.

People gave me three electronic swings, and they are very big. I never used them and i hate that they take up so much space. They don't even work so i can't sell them, and i don't think anyone's gonna want broken baby furniture, but i hate to have to throw it away, since they are perfectly fine besides the fact they don't work.

You can use it for tummy time or for propping baby up a little like a seat. I use it as a neck pillow sometimes when in bed. I've also used it to prop up my arm when DS is sleeping on my chest so I can keep a good hold on him.

  • I used a fairly minimal registry list so no expensive regrets. But my DH regrets the windi--however, I maintain if we hadn't purchased it we probably would've needed it (and its just funny). I use the baby tub as a laundry basket....since our rental has weird short faucets and I can't get the tub under it (ikea for 6 dollars so not a big loss).

I think that it's funny that what one person lists as a regret, another mom can't live without it. If you're a ftm, I would suggest keeping things that you may think of as a regret. DD is so different from DS who is two that we have needed different things.
Very true! DD wouldn't take any pacifiers except for Soothies. We have tons of them. I got rid of any other pacifiers we got as samples, like MAM or Nuk, since she wouldn't have anything to do with them. DS was ok with the Soothies at first (I even bought another 2-pack that I haven't opened yet), but most of the time he acts as if you're putting something disgusting in his mouth: makes a face like he's smelled something nasty and spits it out. He was fussing last night, so I tried a MAM pacifier that I had been letting DD use for her baby doll and he passed the F out after sucking on it for a little while. I gave him to him again while I was getting DD ready for bed and he was happy with it. Go figure. So my regret is buying extra Soothies for him and for throwing out the sample pacifiers we got with DD that she never used.

DD also hated the baby swing that we'd borrowed from SIL, so we didn't bother with one for DS at first. I finally got one a few weeks ago and he loves it and will fall asleep in it. DD only screamed any time we put her in one.

And swaddling is another one. DD loved being swaddled and I swaddled her until she started breaking her knees out of them. She was a good 4 months or so. We swaddled her with her arms at her sides, and then with one arm out when she started rolling over. I stopped swaddling DS at about 2 weeks old. He hated it and would get pissed off when I tried. I was able to swaddle him with his arms across his chest for a little while, but even that didn't last too long. So much for those SwaddleMes I bought for him... He's already using a Halo Sleepsack at night now, arms up above his head.

  • I regret NOTHING. I will continue buying everything baby related because it fuels my online shopping addiction and I don't get the guilts because it's not for me.

I regret that OTHERS buying us too many clothes in the one size and bottles that he hates.

The only thing we didn't buy was a swing because I didn't want to spend $300 odd and find he hated it. We borrowed one from a friend and it is a life saver. I have a whole drawer of D batteries for that thing because the day it craps out and I have no replacement batteries is the day this house will fall. That will definitely be the first purchase for our next child.

When you buy one for the next babe, get one that plugs in if you can! Then you don't have to feel guilty when you leave the thing on for two hours after picking the baby up and he's sleeping on your lap :) and no home shattering battery buying fails.

I also use it as a back rest when I'm sitting on the couch and baby isn't eating.

Why would you have to spend $300 on a swing? I got one through Amazon for around $50.

I'm in Australia. So the dollar is different and comparing some other products we seem to be more expensive for some ridiculous reason. A decent swing is $200-$300. But I just got super lucky. My baby store just rang and they can't get the portable swing in that I ordered on special for $99 so they are upgrading me to the full size swing which is normally $350 for no extra cost. score.
  • We have a huge family, so we didn't have to buy much with either kid, but we got So. Many. Blankets. It's crazy! It feels like every person gave a blanket and an outfit!

The one thing I regret buying was the box of size one diapers from Amazon. It was a good deal but then 3 people showed up with giant boxes and we are still working our way through the second. I doubt we will get through it before she sizes up as it feels like I'm squeezing her in them now. At least my SIL is due in June so that's a good gift for them I guess!

If you haven't opened the box, take it to Target, Babies R Us, buybuyBaby. Most of those places will let you exchange for a different size as long as they sell the one you are exchanging.

ETA: You can do this without a receipt.
