Workouts for moms who never worked out?

I have browsed through some of the fit moms or weight lifting threads, but are there any moms who are just starting to exercise this pregnancy? I've never really worked out except for hiking and the occasional Zumba class. I don't think I'm super out of shape but I'm definitely not a vision of fitness lol! Today at church I got winded from picking up my 18 month old twice! I know it will only get harder from here on out so I think I better
get moving now! What exercises are you doing? I should mention that I do have a gym membership but I most likely am not going to be able or willing to spend more than 30 min-an hour working out a day. Should I just walk or something else! Thanks in advance!

I only workout 2-3 times a week. I just use the elliptical for 30 minutes. You could try 15 minutes and work up from there. It doesn't put any stress on my joints and I feel like I get a good workout that's not strenuous but feels like I'm doing something active. You could also lift 3-5 lb hand weights for 5-10 minutes to work out your arm muscles. There's quite a few different arm workouts you could try. I would google some. That's all I'm doing right now but feel like it's enough for me at this time.

Also since you have a gym membership you can see if you gym offers any type of yoga classes? My gym doesn't and I think it would be fun to do something different maybe once a week.

  • Thank you! I totally forgot about the elliptical! I tried to lightly jog this week and I felt my hips since they are so loose right now! Thank you!
  • Walking for sure. Also YouTube BodyFit By Amy is has some really good workouts.

  • Walking is actually really good for you. If you can squeeze that in along with maybe a prenatal yoga class or dvd (there are many) that might be good to start. I've also read the Tracy Anderson prenatal workout DVDs are really good. I believe there is one for each month and she tailors them for women as they progress in the pregnancy. You can get them on Amazon. I've debated buying them but I have many others and have enough in my collection. :)

  • I like walking and the "what to expect when you're expecting" workout dvd. It's 6 low impact short workouts for pregnancy.

  • I just do the elliptical for about 45 mins or so then planks as my ab workout 2x a week. I also walk my dogs 30-45 mins sometimes an hour 2-3x a week and that seems to be enough for me. Before getting pregnant I was running and weight lifting which I still did at the beginning but I found that I would get so insanely sore later that night and couldn't sleep. Idk if it's because all my ligaments are more loose being pregnant or what but i was just too uncomfortable so I scaled it down. Pinterest has a lot of pregnancy workouts you can refer to as well.

  •  I would guess that walking would be pretty good. But definitely talk to your doctor about anything beyond that.
  • Walking but be sure it is brisk fast walking for at least 30 minutes to really get a good cardio workout.  You could also invest in some little ankle/wrist weights and wear those while cleaning or on your walks.  You tube is an amazing resource - Tracey andersons arm workouts are fab.

The ellipitical really hurts my knees and I can never break a sweat on it so I love the stair stepper thingy or the  big rolling stair machine.  Both get my blood pumping so fast and it helps keep your thighs and butt nice and tight!

Good job and Stay motivated! Xo

  • I actually called the doc about this last week.  I am basically inactive physically, except for basic household cleaning and a short walk with the kids or doc.  But I see my A** and hips growing, so I need to do something.  They suggested walking and small weight lifting.  They said because I was inactive to start short.  Walk five minutes and then turn around the first day and build up from there.  I did 20 mins and felt great.  And then I did weighted lunges at home later.
  • @jengle77 I laughed about the booty and hips growing! I never have a butt and so my fiancé gets excited around this time when I'm pregnant because all of the sudden it's huge!! Go you for the lunges! And thank you all for the advice I'm going to keep trying different new things to see if I can find one or two that I love!
