Did you cut out lactose while EBF?

So for those EBF... I have read a bit about some of you mentioning your baby has gas and spit up due to your intake of milk or lactose. Just wanted to see your experiences. My LO is gassy and spitting up and I do notice it coincides with me eating ten thousand bowls of cereal :/

Re: Did you cut out lactose while EBF?

  • So...I've been having this problem with DD for a while now and I love milk too much, like way too much, and I selfishly kept drinking it until I saw her cry from gas pain once and I dumped the milk and there was no more! Then I went ahead and was at the store and said, why not try lactose free milk?? And I bought some. Best stuff ever. And then then I totally regretted it because she was spitting up more and so much worse gas-wise. And I read online, that it's not really the lactose it's more of the protein in cows milk that is the issue. So all in all I can't really drink or eat any dairy, which is so upsetting to me. But it had to be done. Now I'm waiting because it takes a couple weeks to see if there really is a difference. Maybe I just ate spicy food on accident? Only time will tell...

  • Babies aren't sensitive to the lactose, they are sensitive to the proteins (particularly casein) and they are still present in lactose free milk.

As as for cutting dairy, yes, lots of us have. I think many of us have had variable degrees of success. There are 2-3 threads all about it a few pages back. I'm on my mobile otherwise I'd link you to the threads, but you could do a search for them.

i personally have to cut very large portions of dairy. 1 slice of cheese won't do anything, but a glass of milk is asking for trouble.
  • I love cheese. I ate so much of it! But DD would grunt all night long and was soo gassy, specifically after I ate things like pizza and Mac and cheese. So I gave it up and she sleeps great and doesn't grunt anymore. I don't eat much else dairy, I've been able to keep adding a splash of milk to my tea and the occasional Greek yogurt (3-4 a week).
  • I cut out dairy for about a month, but I didn't see a difference or improvement in her gas. So I added it back in and still no change, but it's gotten a lot better recently I think she just grew out of it
  • I cut dairy in the height of my LOs colic, but honestly i would have done anything, colic is gone (yay!) but that I think was just time and her digestive system maturing (I noticed a lot less gas once she only pooped 3x a day). I have not reintroduced yet, mainly out of fear. I don't eat any gas causing veggies/nuts/dairy/caffeine

You just said nuts? God lol I have been eating nuts all day every day for snacks. O.o

I think some Moms eat them without issue, my husband has a lot of food intolerances (nuts being one, not a true allergy but they really bother him, mouth is itchy, hurt his stomach) and sometimes if one of the parents have issues, the baby can. Honestly there is not much research that says food/breastmilk and babies fussiness is connected, mainly antecdotal from actual moms, but I did it because a baby having colic is one of the worst things in the world and it wasn't worth it just in case. I'm dying to eat dairy at this point but I think I will wait till 6 months.

There really isn't any reliable research that shows a connection between what we eat and whether it affects baby through our milk. There are anecdotes a plenty, though! My girls are really gassy, but I never notice a change when I change my diet. Their pediatrician was telling me that, unless they have a legit milk protein allergy (the kind that can lead to anaphylaxis), then the more likely culprit is a lack of good gut bacteria. This is especially true if your baby was given antibiotics after birth or if you are on antibiotics. Both my girls got a few rounds of antibiotics during their stay in the NICU and I noticed a big difference once I started giving them probiotics. I also noticed that the gas got worse when I started a recent round of antibiotics (due to strep throat), and will be making sure they get that probiotic again. But in the end, you're the mommy and you get to do whatever makes you the most comfortable
