Are you drinking coffee/caffeine this pregnancy?

Just wanted to get a feel for what people are doing with their coffee intake. I'm still having my one small cup in the morning but I feel guilty every time. I know there are many different opinions so I thought we could get a little poll going to see what all of us are doing.

  • I have one cup of coffee every morning. My dr says it's fine, and also my sanity demands it.

  • I went off coffee the first time I was pregnant for nausea reasons, and never went back.  I drink tea now, so caffeinated, but less than coffee.  I still drink one cup every morning.

I'm not a big coffee drinker but if I had the craving for one every once in awhile, I would drink it.  I don't drink soda much either but one every now and then is fine.  I think I've had one soda since being pregnant.  Caffeine is not something that's ever been a huge part of my diet though, so I don't really think about.  I do plan on getting a cherry Coke this evening at dinner during our date night :)

I quite caffeinated coffee last pregnancy and never went back.  I do have a decaf ice coffee every once in a while in the summer.

  • There's very little that I feel I can control during this pregnancy. This is one of the few things I feel I can change this time around, so I've gone cold turkey. I do still eat chocolate (in fact, thinking about chocolate molten cakes for tonight....yum!). But otherwise, I'm skipping caffeinated beverages. This is 99.9% for my peace of mind, rather than any likely physical benefit.
  • I'm trying, but the nausea is killing me.  I gave it up for all of first tri last time.

  • There is no reason ti give it up in the first tri, or ever. You just have to limit it to 200mg (I think) / day. I probably drank it almost every day first tri last time. I had hideous headaches and it might have helped.

  • I am a coffee addict and lover. I normally have 3-4 cups a day. With my daughter I went down to one cup a day and she turned out perfect. Newer studies I read recently found an association with miscarriage above 100 mg a day. So, since I'm paranoid after my loss I'm on all decaf at this point.
  • I put other. I quit soda about 2 years ago. I don't like/drink coffee or tea. Basically all I ever drink is water. So I'm not really changing my typical fluid consumption.

  • I voted other. I am not drinking things like a regular cup of coffee, soda, caffeinated tea, etc. However, I drink protein shakes in the mornings that have 1/2 teaspoon of instant coffee and 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder. It's not enough caffeine for me to feel worried about.

  • I used to drink a large coffee every morning but cut back when we decided to try to have a baby. I switched to half coffee, half hot chocolate and medium instead of large. In our sixth cycle, I wanted to try something new and skipped all coffee and the 1-2 alcoholic drinks I might have had during the TWW. That's when I got pregnant. I don't claim that had anything to do with why this was our month but I'm scared to jinx it.
  • Yes.  This is baby #3.  I quit for the first trimester with baby #1.  With Baby #2, I was so tired that I was going to fall asleep driving.  Figured it was better to drink coffee than crash the car and kill both of us.  Now, I'm having a small latte in the morning (75 mg or so?) and a soda in the afternoon (another 50-100 mg).

Did you guys know that they inject premature babies with caffeine in NICUs?

  • @RiverSong15 same. If I can at least control that, it's one less thing I can say I should have done if something goes wrong.

  • I've been taking one small travel mug in the morning and slowly drinking it. I haven't been feeling well enough to drink it all at once anyway.
    Otherwise im all decaf!
Once I'm feeling better I'll go back to one full regular in the am and then decaf.
  • TW

i cut down to 1 during my last PG which ended in miscarrige (Partial Molar which is a genetic issue). I had weeks where I couldn't stomach it also.

I'm monitoring and having 2 at most but I'm also being a little easier on myself this time. It won't be my fault if we lose this baby and I'm sure it won't be yours.
  • Last pregnancy I couldn't stomach coffee at all, and couldn't drink tea on an empty stomach.

This pregnancy I've been okay with both, but I am limiting myself to 1 cup of coffee or two of caffienated tea a day.

  • I was drinking 4 servings of caffeine a day before this pregnancy. Now I am just having a small cup of coffee. My doctor said that was fine.
  • I have a toddler and get up at 345 for work. No one will survive if I don't get some sort of caffeine intake. This time coffee mostly makes me sick unless it has a ton of milk. So tea it is.
  • I was never a coffee drinker so won't be drinking it now either. I don't drink anything with caffeine in it. Now chocolate is another story, that's about the only caffeine I have.
  • I'm drinking about five cups of decaf tea per day and 2-3 lattes per week (less tea on latte days). If I don't drink it, I'm falling asleep at my desk and can't function in meetings. Once it gets warmer, I'm sure I'll drink a little less of it but right now it's freezing in my office and I need it to keep me going.
  • Other - I gave up coffee except maybe 1 cup per week. I've had a coke a few times when I've been totally exhausted, which is funny because I usually don't like soda very much. I ADORE coffee, so it's easier for me to cut it out for the most part because if I have 1 cup, I want 3.

  • I'm from Seattle. It's in my blood.

However, 1 cup in the A.M. and a split shot in the evening or some black tea to assist in ass drag will do me just fine. ☕
  • I was a daily coffee drinker (1-2 cups) before getting pregnant but have reduced it down to 1-2 cups a week and half is decaf!
  • I'm not a big coffee drinker but if I had the craving for one every once in awhile, I would drink it.  I don't drink soda much either but one every now and then is fine.  I think I've had one soda since being pregnant.  Caffeine is not something that's ever been a huge part of my diet though, so I don't really think about.  I do plan on getting a cherry Coke this evening at dinner during our date night :)
This is me exactly. Except I didn't get a cherry coke tonight. Or a date. ;)
  • One cup of decaf a few times a week (not even every day) will keep me happy!  I've been better about drinking tea instead since finding out.

  • *I'm drinking decaf. I know it still has some caffeine but I've decided that's ok.

  • I'm drinking decaf too...my doc said 1 cup of reg a day is fine, but I'm a nervous wreck so I doubt I need the caffeine too. I may reconsider after the first trimester, though!

  • *TW* I quit coffee and alcohol cold turkey after my MC over New Year's. I do still have a cup of black tea every day, and I do not intend to give it up. It's great because if I need a boost in the afternoons, I'm still well within the daily 200 mg of caffeine range if I have a second cup of tea.

  • Like my last pregnancy, I'm cutting back to one caffeinated beverage a day - a pretty big change from my usual 3-4.
  • I'm at 2 cups of decaf a day now. I pretend it's real. Sadly, that's not effective.
  • It took us 6 months to conceive, so I took the first few months to wean myself off. I wasn't a huge coffee drinker to begin with--I would have one medium coffee every weekday morning before work. I switched to decaf and although the first two weeks were terrible (headaches, cranky, tired), I got through it! I no longer feel the "need" to drink coffee to survive my mornings. I've had a decaf here and there when I'm craving coffee taste, but honestly can't remember the last time I had a cup. I'm currently 7 weeks and hope to continue my caffeine-free streak throughout pregnancy.
  • With Caffeine it's either all or nothing for me.  So either I drink energy drinks, tea, and coffee every second of every day or I abstain completely, so as soon as we started TTC I cut it out completely.

  • I have a cup of coffee every morning and I typically drink black tea in the evening. I just try to drink lots of water and not think about it too much. I quit drinking coffee during the first trimester of my first two pregnancies, but one cup is fine and the headaches are brutal.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • With my first child I took the 20 grams of caffeine (I think that was it) very very seriously. This time around though I'm feeling much better and I'm eating healthy and it just happens that my routine is to get an iced coffee in the morning. I know my friend was an avid coffee drinker through all three of her pregnancy and suffered no ill effects. That being said, with only minor shame I've continued and probably will keep continuing to have my morning iced coffee.

  • I avoided in the first tri of my first pregnancy. This time around I kept up with my cup a day because I have a job and a toddler who hates sleep. BUT, I voted "not in the first tri" because I have not been able to drink coffee this past week because it turns my stomach. So now that I'm detoxed I'll probably just wait until after the first tri to start again.

  • I have a coke or unsweetened tea once every a week if the urge is too strong to ignore but I limit it to one small or medium drink and sometimes pour part of it out when I've satisfied my craving just to limit caffeine to the minimum possible. My OB/GYN said a glass or two of either a day was fine but I'm trying to be more healthy and mindful of my diet in general while I'm pregnant.
