GTKY: Prenatal Yoga

I just took my 3rd prenatal yoga class last night and I am really loving it!  I'm just wondering if there are any other mamas out there who are taking prenatal yoga and loving it?  Any particular reasons you're taking it?  What do you get most out of it?

I know I've only taken 3 classes but I find it so interesting how different my body feels each week in different positions.  For example last week I was all about child's pose but then this week it wasn't feeling as great as some other stretches.  It's really helped me get in tune with my body so I'm looking forward to another 20 or so weeks of this, assuming I can handle it!

I'm also leaning more and more towards a 100% natural birth and I think yoga practice is really going to benefit me in that department.  So much good heavy breathing and increasing flexibility & strength!

I'd love to hear from others who are enjoying prenatal yoga or who have in the past!

  • Yes, I'm taking it once a week and really liking it. It feels so good to stretch and have some time to breathe and connect with baby. I had really bad sciatica pain in my left hip and prenatal yoga has significantly reduced by discomfort. I do plan to get an epidural but I'm glad to continue learning the stretches and poses that will help me throughout my pregnancy and in early labor.

  • I've been going just about every Sunday and really enjoying it, too. I started going really early, I believe at 7 weeks, which I know is kind of silly (almost everyone else in the class was in their second or third tri), but I am hoping it might pay off in terms of preparing my body for labor. Also I am hoping to make some friends in the class as time goes on.

At the class I go to, they spend about 15 minutes at the start of the session going around the room so people can "share" what they're experiencing or struggling with at the moment. I know it sounds a little corny but it's nice. Aside from the Bump, I don't have a community of pregnant women around me, so I like hearing from the other women what they're experiencing, comparing tips on local resources, etc. I tried one other class before I settled on this one -- I found that instructor a little bit new agey for my taste, and she also tried to sell us essentail oils, which I thought was unprofessional. I am so glad I tried another class and didn't give up!

I also appreciate the workout itself. The class is fairly gentle, obviously, but it's still a workout, which I need! The instructor challenges us to hold certain poses such as planks and chair pose, and she also gets a pretty decent flow going so that I sweat and get my heart rate up. I've been doing prenatal yoga on Sundays, my regular pre-pregnancy pilates class on Thursdays, and taking occasional walks. I feel like I need to incorporate more exercise into my pregnancy but I don't feel up for a lot lately. I tried to do some hiking with DH over the weekend but I tired out quickly and had to sit down to rest a lot (we were also at high altitude) so it ended up being a scenic drive instead. And we stopped for burgers.  :)
  • I do prenatal yoga at home using a prenatal yoga book and pose cards. I did it all through my first pregnancy and I thought it helped a lot with getting through an unmedicated birth. Comments from you guys are making me think that perhaps I should look into local classes too; it might be good to learn some of this stuff from a pro, rather than just getting the info from cards/books.

  • I am still going to my regular weekly class that I have been attending for the past 2 years (well I skipped out week 6-10 as I was soooooooo tired). I have been doing modifications when needed but I did see that my studio does offer a prenatal class as well. I LOVE my current instructor and the time I spend with my mom as we take our class together, so I think I may alternate between the 2.

I took my first class last night and loved it! It was the perfect combination of relaxation and stretching/strengthening. We also spent the first 15 minutes going around the room sharing any difficulties we were having and solutions or just general tips. It was nice to have other ladies going through the same thing to share ideas with in person!
  • It sounds like the 15-minute discussion in the beginning is pretty standard for prenatal yoga.  My instructor does this as well.  We go around and introduce ourselves to newcomers, say how far along we are, and answer a question the instructor asks.  It's so neat to hear what other people are experiencing, especially those who are later in their pregnancies.

1faceinacrowd I want to start doing some yoga at home also but I definitely think having a chance to meet up with pregnant women on a weekly basis is a really important part of it also, in addition to getting instruction from a professional.  Good luck finding a great class near you! :)

  • I don't have any local classes around by me, however I have been doing regular yoga, prenatal yoga, and prenatal pilates at home now since I found out I was pregnant along with some light weights.  I honestly think that my ability to do this consistently through the first trimester (even when I was tired and nauseous) really helped me not get sick and only gain a few lbs so far.  I really wish I had a prenatal class close by, because I would love to join one.  I love yoga and pilates in general and hope I can continue it into my third trimester.  It might get a little more challenging with the twins, but I'm going to keep trying! :)

  • I took my first one last Saturday and absolutely fell in love with it. I'm planning on buying a package to use and going each week when I'm able to. Out of town for the next two weeks but after that for sure going more often. I was so relaxed afterward and it helped me to get more in touch with what kinds of stretches I needed to do more. I'm hoping it's going to help with trying for a natural birth.

  • So fun! I have been practicing yoga for a few years now but, don't take a specific prenatal yoga class.  I also do a few rounds of sun salutations each morning and it really does help keep me feeling great.  YouTube has some great videos as well if you can't make it into a studio for a class.  Namaste! :)
  • I have been doing gentle Hatha and Ying yoga for 2 years. With the pregnancy I have had to switch to classes with less time on your back, but not specifically prenatal. I love yoga, it is amazing how it helps your body. I had stopped early in my pregnancy and got terrible sciatica pain, went back to yoga and it has gone away.
  • I've been going to three different prenatal yoga classes weekly. Not an intense workout but still nice "me" time along with other workouts on other days. I may like the fact of talking with other pregnant women more than the actual class haha
