Postpartum swelling?

I had no swelling prior to going into labor, and had a pretty quick delivery with only 1-2 bags of fluids but my arms, legs, hands and ankles look and feel so swollen still.  I've read it can be 'normal' for up to a week, and I'm at 5 days and I guess I thought it would be gone by now.  Also I'm only down 8lbs but I had a 7lb+ baby so I know there has to be a decent amount fluid being retained.  Has anyone experienced this?  I don't remember this from my last two pregnancies, although I do remember being swollen after the first, but I was in labor a looong time laying in bed with fluids so it made more sense.

Re: Postpartum swelling?

  • I didn't really have any visible swelling until I got fluids in the hospital. My delivery was urgent-turned-emergency cesarean, and I was swollen for a bit over a week. It got worse in my legs if I was too active. I lost almost 10 more pounds after I started really sweating it out.

I was an urgent csection after 30 hrs of labor. I was swollen for over a week. Then one day it was just gone. I had some but pretty minimal swelling during my pregnancy so this was creepy!  The pic on the left is the day after csection -  it got worse before it got better. The right is what my normal feet look like

  • I didn't have any swelling with my boys, but with little girl my legs and feet were swollen for almost 2 weeks. I actually could hardly get my boots on when it came time to leave the hospital. I want to say it was gone by day 10. It definitely isn't fun & I had a hard time just getting up and down from the floor to change her, felt like my feet were going to burst open from bending. Hopefully yours goes away soon!
  • Thanks for the responses, sounds like I just need to be more patient.  It's noticeably better today so I'm hoping this is the start of it going down permanently.

I was super swollen this last pregnancy, which was my third. I didn't remember it being that bad with the other two... It took about 9-10 days and went away. I was concerned too because I had zero swelling during my pregnancy and then puffed up after. It literally was there one day and gone the next. Just be patient, I guess it's all normal
  • Mine was awful and made walking very difficult.  Get compression socks!

  • I slept with my feet propped up and then put compression socks on during the day and also drank tons of lemon infused water and it has helped tremendously.  I'd say I'm just about back to normal. I'm also 1 week postpartum now so I'm not sure if those things helped or my body just kicked into gear and started flushing it out.  If you're struggling hang in there, it's normal and will get better!
