GTKY - First Car Edition

edited March 2016 in November 2016 Moms

So I still lurk on the TTGP Board because I love seeing the BFP announcements and how excited they all get when someone gets one (gifs etc).  I especially am lurking daily this month to see who else from TTGP joins us in the N16 BMB.  I'd guess many of us from TTGP still do.  Anyway, I like their GTKY today so I figured I'd borrow it.

What was your first car?  Bonus for anyone who can share a funny story about it.

Re: GTKY - First Car Edition

  • I had a grey 1987 Nissan Sentra.  I got it in 1998 and while it old I still proudly drove it around.  The gray paint was somewhat worn and so it looked more like stone so my BFF named it Stoney LOL.

Anyway, good old Stoney lasted a few years before she died on me (literally she stopped in the middle of the road (thankfully a residential one) and started smoking.  #RIP

Bonus:  If you put the passenger window down past a certain point the door would open!  Some call it dangerous I call it an added safety feature LOL.

  • My first car was a black 1989 Camaro named Rusty...because it was rusty.  It wasn't the best looking car but for whatever, my 16 year old self wanted an 80's Camaro and an 80's Camaro is what I got.  My dad new a guy who painted cars and was going to have him paint it midnight blue for me, but the guy had an aneurysm in his head that put him in the hospital, so my car stayed rusty.  I only had for year or so before I traded it for a different car.

  • My first car was a 1998 Mazda MX-3 Precidia whom I named Priscilla. Sporty little (definitely '90s-looking!) two door, four-seater car. Guy was selling it because they'd had a baby and there was no room in the back for a car seat.

I bought it just a couple of days before I found out I was pregnant with my first.

Priscilla needed a bunch of work before she could be certified to run on the roads here, so I ended up getting rid of her without ever making the repairs because, well, we needed something more family friendly.

  • Mine was a 2014 Ford Escape which I got once I got pregnant with DS. Before that I either drove my parents cars or my boyfriends (turned into husbands) car. I've always lived in urban settings so a car wasn't exactly necessary.

  • I had a '86 Toyota truck for a few months until my mom broke it and then I got a 93 Nissan Sentra and I had that for a year or two. It's was pretty lame. The doors didn't lock right every time so you had to flip the switch back and forth until it did. A/c was broken which was awesome in California and the heat took about 20 minutes to get warm. Oh and true gas gauge was broken so I ran out of gas a lot until I figured out the trick lol

Lovely old blue Toyota Sienna mini-van. It was pretty much as sexy as can be. My husband (boyfriend at the time) called it The Mauve Maurauder because he doesn't understand colors.

Mine was a 1982 Mazda 626 (a year older than me).  My dad bought it for me and I absolutely hated that car.  I would go over puddles and water would come up from underneath, that is how rusted out it was.  I didn't have it for long once my father realized it probably wasn't very safe.

  • a 1999 oldsmobile alero. Such a good car. I miss ole Larry.
  • 1994 Ford Explorer (this was in 2002) Eddie Bauer edition. I thought it was so fancy with leather seats and a sun roof. I miss that car!
  • When I was 17 my sister gave me what was her first car a 1983 white Honda Civic with red interior.  This was 2002 so she was an old lady.  My BIL had also hit a fallen tree with it so the hood latch no longer worked so it had hood pins.  He also installed a CB radio for an unknown reason.

Bonus:  I believe it was the choke that didn't work properly so when I would start it I had to keep revving the engine for a good ten minutes to keep it running.  Also, because of this issue while driving the engine would just shut off and I'd have to pop the clutch to get it going again.

Additional bonus:  I got rear ended and the guy hit me so hard he bent the frame so my back doors no longer would open.  While it didn't effect me much my friends hated having to crawl into the back seat from either the window or the front seat.
  • LOL @EmmieAnn22, love your additional bonus LOL

  • My first car was a 2000 ford escort zx2. It was bright blue and my absolute favorite. It had been my aunts and it only had about 20,000 miles on it when I got it junior year of high school.

I maintain I'd still be driving the LBC today if a girl hadn't hit me sophomore year of college and totaled the thing.
  • 1999 black Toyota Camry. Her name was Delilah... And I'm sure she's still running somewhere :)
  • A 2002 Pontiac Grand Am. I loved that car. I survived a major accident in that car and it got me across the country twice.

I got rear-ended (hard) about 5 years ago and that was the end of it. It was a sad day.

  • My first car was/is a 2006 PT Cruiser. I had to get one because I learned to drive in a PT Cruiser and had no idea it could actually accommodate tall folks (I'm 6'2"). I call it the clown car because I know when my husband (6'6") rides with me, it must look crazy as hell when we step out!
  • Mine was a 1982 Toyota Corolla, with a 5sp manual conversion. It was both my first road legal car and my first rally car, I loved that thing, my dad and I named it ollie and I did all my own mechanical work on it, but that was the deal with it. It was the car I learnt to drift in, and the car I learnt real driving in. He taught me how to enjoy cars and enjoy the sport of driving.
i let a friend borrow it and the fuel pump gave out, my dad went to try and fix it but couldn't so we left it overnight until we could pick it up with a trailer in the morning, it was burnt out while parked there.
    i cried for days...
