PSA: Are you thinking about a SIDS monitor?

For those who would like to get a baby movement monitor to help prevent SIDS but might not be able to afford one...
There is an amazing organization that lends free portable baby movement monitors to babies for their first year of life.  For those who may not have heard of these, it's a little device that clips onto baby's diaper during naps and bedtime, and if it does not detect breathing or motion within a certain amount of time an alarm sounds to alert caretakers.
I used them to receive a monitor in 2014 with DS2 and it was so great. They sent me a Snuza Hero monitor.  I used it for almost 7 months for every nap and bedtime, and while we did have a couple false alarms (I had not clipped the monitor close enough) there was at least one occasion that I remember when it went off when he might not have taken a breath. Luckily I was right there and able to make sure all was well. If we can afford it this pregnancy, I'd love to buy my own monitor, but otherwise I'll definitely use them again and send in a donation.
They are called The Gracie Faith Infant Sids Prevention Program, for those who may want to Google it!

  • Also- check your local consignment sales. I paid $150 when I was pregnant with our first child for an Angelcare with two monitors... gave it away later. Then I just picked up one at a consignment sale (same model!) this weekend for $25. Can sell it for the same amount probably.

  • Very helpful. Thank you. My first was low risk for SIDS and this one most likely will be too. Unless there is a diagnosed problem I probably wouldn't get the alarm. It's nice to know an organization like this exists and is willing to help families avoid the unthinkable.

  • Thank you sooooo much! This was something I cut off my "must haves" when my husband got laid off, and it is nice to know it can still happen. I reached out to them. They do have a waiting list, just FYI. One of my friends growing up lost her baby girl to SIDS when we were teenagers... three months old, it was *terrible.* That scared me enough I wanted to do whatever we could to prevent it.

If my husband does find a job before August (FX!!!) then we will buy that brand rather than another, and send it to them when we are done with it. I confirmed by emailing them, they will take a donation in the form of a used monitor.

  • I just discovered these a couple weeks ago and plan on buying and angel care for this baby. I wish I had known these existed when my first two were babies! My first was put in special care when she was born due to her gestation and weight, and thank God they did. She stopped breathing at 5 hours old. This would have helped my sanity and ability to sleep when she came come 16 days later. But after the tramatizing experience of having a baby with breathing problems and nicu, it has remained my biggest fear, even after my second was born completely healthy. Maybe I will donate our monitor to this organization when we are done with it
  • Thanks for the information. I have already been looking into these but did not have a decision on the brand yet. My brothers best friend lost his almost 4 month old to SIDS and my best friend lost a nephue.
  • Thanks for the information!
  • Great information!  I used the angel care monitor with my 2nd daughter (she was a belly sleep from a super early age) and I swear by it.  Again, a few false alarms, but it allowed me to sleep better knowing that if something happened I would be there in an instant.  I gave mine away and luckily my girlfriend just posted that she is selling hers.  We are treating them to dinner and getting the monitor from them for free!  YAY!
  • You are all welcome!  I especially liked this brand of monitor because it was super portable, and we spend a lot of time outside the house.   Thanks for the heads up about the waiting list.
  • This is awesome! I had no idea about these monitors and my husband was a huge risk for SIDS as an infant. Ive been super worried about it. I will definitely be looking into these!!
  • I'm definitely thinking about buying one, I just don't know which. Any brand recommendations?
  • I think this one looks very interesting.
