I Regret Buying

Since we had thread dedicated to products we use, let's talk about what we do not use and wasted money buying.

things we have never used:

Changing pad for his dresser
Diaper caddy for his room

He hasn't even slept in his room yet and we change him on the couch or our bed. After he was born I used the changing area on top of the PNP because F climbing stairs and traveling after having a CS while carrying a screaming baby.

Also, cloth diapers. He just grew into them and screams like a banshee when we put one one til we take it off.

Re: I Regret Buying

  • The mamaroo, she hates it. She also hated the rock n play.  Cloth diapers were a waste.
  • Loading the player...
  • We didn't buy either but she hates her crib and the pack n play. I imagine we'll use them eventually but I'm glad we went with a cheaper crib and feel bad I insisted on such an expensive pnp model.
  • I regret buying SO MUCH clothes. I bought a huge lot of baby clothes up to 2T from a lady off of facebook for like $200 thinking it was such a good deal. Well, the lady I bought the clothes from said her son was born in January so the clothes would be seasonally appropriate. Somehow I have a bunch of 6-9 months winter clothes which is obviously not going to work. Plus I have stuff with dogs on it that I don't like and it's a chore to sort through because it's not very organized.
  • Oh so much stuff, bassinet used like 30mins here or there, swing for her to sleep in because bassinet didn't work,
baby monitor(I'm sure we'll use it eventually).
  • Also, my stroller that doesn't have the seat that the car seat clicks into. I just wear my lo all the time so I hardly use that thing. I doubt he'll stop bring so clingy before he is too big for it.
  • I'm honestly trying to think of something I bought that was a waste, but so far haven't thought of anything! But I have a ton of stuff that other people bought me:

Glass bottles. He is formula fed but loves his Avent Natural bottles that we got with my pump/freebie packs from various websites or maternity stores. He hates the nipple on the glass bottles.

Soooo many blankets. I seriously have 4 quilts, 3 knit blankets, and a ton of thick fluffy blankets. He only uses the knit ones because I love them so much for in the car seat. One of the quilts will be big enough for when he is older, but all the other blankets just sit in the wardrobe I have designated for blankets... Haha.

Swaddle me's... Don't use them. I have 3 lulujo swaddle blankets that are HUGE (definitely recommend them.) He only gets swaddled in them.

We got a bunch of hand me downs so I don't really have many regrets. And she uses everything. Her bassinet, her swing.. everything that she's not too small for yet. One thing maybe is all the clothing I got for her before i knew how she would grow and how many freaking clothes her grandmother buys her :) I could have saved myself a lot of time and money.

But i discovered this great chain in our area called Once Upon A Child. Buy secondhand clothes and, when she outgrows them, take them back for cash and use that cash to buy more. I'd say I'll never shop new for her for at least the next ten years.

EDIT: Maybe a few things, looking back, were dumb purchases but honestly, how can you know? How can you know they won't like a swing until you try them out on one? How can you know that they'll love their bassinet - for two days before refusing it? Babies are a crapshoot.
  • I love OUAC! We bought Henry's bedding from there, brand new Lion King crib set for $30. Also found the Lion King lamp and other decor super cheap. I guess it could be considered a waste but I love his room, even if he never sleeps there.
  • All the 0-3 month clothing I bought and people bought for me. The 0-3 stage is probably the quickest stage for all my children because of how much they cluster feed for the first few weeks of life & how big they were at birth (although this one was a pound smaller than my other two) I honestly don't know what I was thinking ordering a lot of clothes from old navy lol. Should've just stuck to sleepers and gowns, for that stage at least.
  • Let me think... They only thing I dislike and dont use is the hand me down pack and play and she does not use the crib anymore. She will eventually again when its a toddler bed I guess lol
  • Actually that's true about 0-3! My son is 2.5 months and is fitting well into 6 months. However, it is Carters and Carters runs small. He barely wore his 3 month clothes. Skipped from newborn to 6 months in like 4 weeks.

I regret the Mamaroo too. Our little one is not impressed. We actually just packed it up and are taking it back to buy buy baby tomorrow. We also took back several fleece halo sleep sacks. We were so concerned he would be too cold that we in turn made him completely sweaty in those thing the first night.

We also have way too many clothes. Mostly dressier clothes, which he's obviously not wearing much. Luckily they were purchased mostly at a nicer thrift store that I love going to!

Another thing I just thought of is the Halo bassinest. We got the upgraded one with a light, vibrate feature, music, etc. and have never used any of them. He loves the bassinet. Just didn't need the bells and whistles.
  • Fortunately we didn't buy a lot of the things we haven't used. But she never fit in newborn clothes, so we had some really cute stuff that I washed (that was stupid of me and I regret washing clothes) and she never wore. She is also quickly growing out of 3 month already (she's only 11 weeks, we couldn't know this). There's no way I've been able to put her in all the clothes we were gifted.

I regret asking my parents for the mobile for the crib. She probably won't be in her crib while she's little enough not to sit up and grab it. Sometimes I put her in her crib so she can enjoy the mobile, but the pnp is more convenient for now.

The $90 swing I bought! She's not a fan. She loves her cheap vibrating chair bouncer!
  • DS does not like the swing we bought.  It was $40 on clearance, so I'm not too bummed about it.  He only liked it for a whole 2-3 weeks.  Now he will last no longer than 15-20 minutes in it.  I also have an second diaper bag that is packed and ready.  Why, I don't even know.  I can't imagine a time when DS's main diaper bag would be out of commission and we'd need to use it. I only paid 19$ for it on Black Friday through Babies R Us, so again, not a huge expense down the toilet.  Maybe as he gets older it can be an overnight bag, if he stays at one of our parents house or something.

DS was preemie, so we were able to use/wear pretty much every piece of NB clothing he owned up until about 2-3 weeks ago.  If he had been born term, I'd be in the tons of clothes unworn category.

Other than that, we've used pretty much everything we have so far for DS.  He hasn't slept much in his crib yet, but we've put him down for naps in it. I'd say the pack and play at this point might be the only thing we could  have waited on. We use the changing table part, but he doesn't sleep in it and he is too small to really be active and play in it.  So we will see if he ends up adjusting to it or not. At this point it's just a bulky changing area for us.
  • Fancy swaddles. We got woombies and miracle blankets. And then DD insisted on being swaddled arms out from day one.

I'd say we use everything else, though.  And DD has been in 0-3 and 3 month clothing for what seems like forever.  She's a little girl, so I guess we're an anomaly. Her arms and legs will be too long soon.
  • Mama roo!! So expensive but people told me I *had* to have it. She doesn't like it. Prefers the cheapy swing from Craigslist. Eff.
  • Nothing big (yet) but I have fell for the occasional trendy items, such as the nutrasutten pacifier. I though oh I see tons of trendy moms use it on Instagram it must be good. Bought it on amazon, and nope DS hates it and no matter how many washes I can't get the rubber smell/taste out so its no wonder.
  • I regret not buying enough NB clothes. I had no idea what size my baby would be because my DD is the first baby born in our immediate family . My mom said me and my siblings were all small (which we are still very petit) but my husbands family has BIG babies (My husbands cousin had a baby one day before us and my LO STILL weighs less than that babies birth weight). So I went with caution and bought minimal NB outfits. Whelp baby girl came out tiny . We had so little NB clothes I had to go buy more clothes at 2 weeks. She is 3 mos now and will still fit into NB clothes just barely getting into 0-3 months. I suspect 6 months close will fit until she is 9 months.

My MIL kept telling me not to get NB because none of her kids ever wore that size. But my DD who I have from a previous relationship was so tiny she was in premie size. So I stocked up regardless of what MIL advised, glad I did because he was in NB for a good month I'd say. DH is 6'4 and I'm 5'10. You really just never know! It's such a guessing game.
  • - Definitely NB and 0-3 month clothes. She's 99th% for height and to tall for anything with feet so grew out of those before she could wear.

    - changing pad COVERS/liners. They get pooped and peed on and have to be washed constantly. Stopped using those a few weeks in.

Coincidently I didn't buy the swing she loves (FP Snuggapuppy) cause I was afraid she wouldn't like it, so borrowed from a friend and that thing is a lifesaver.
  • Funny my LOs mamaroo is the ONLY bouncer he stays in. But I believe is because he became accustomed from birth. Besides boppy or arms, its the only thing he'll nap in. Well worth the nearly $300.

*He hates his swing. Waste of $150.
*Never used the changing table attached to the crib. He's too big for it now.
*Diaper Genie- I like it but it gets full every 2 days! I stopped using it after the refills it came with.
*Hates all 6 pacifiers we bought him.
*The formula dispenser I received as a gift. I was so excited I thought was too cool and I thought I would only breastfeed for 3 months. Well it turns out, BF is going great and I'm going to 1 year! I may never use it.

Mine is 97% for height. She is in some 6-9 month clothes *___*
  • I didn't buy it but I hardly use the bottle warmer that I got
  • I'm a STM and this time around I wasn't going to be tricked by all the marketing these retailers do! For DD I did buy way too many 0-3 months for the same reason as @thatgirlree24 stated. This time around I only bought NB, 0-3 months and some 3-6 months. Not all babies grow at the same pace, so I made sure I didn't overload on clothes.

When DS was born I regret buying a wipe warmer, diaper genie (ugh! expensive trash can!), and his bouncy. He never liked the bouncy -- but loved the swing

  • I regret buying the 2 bassinets I have, newborn sized anything, the swing I have which baby sleeps in but should have got a better one. Should have just bought a king sized bed and a swaddle and left it at that
  • The halo bassinet! We returned it. LO hates being swaddled so of course laying him on his back in it does not work.

Luckily we use everything we've received/bought... So....
Ahhhh I was waiting for this :)
  • Well, I would say her swing and non auto RNP, but I sold them both easily and used that money along with Amazon gift card to get the mamaroo and she likes it better than the other two. Other than that I'm not sure.

I regret registering for damn dishwasher basket. I was given 3, gifted 6, returned several, and haven't used one.
  • The baby ktan.  DS hates it, but it just falls into the category of things you won't know until after the baby is born.

Even with asking for larger sizes at the baby showers, we still ended up with way too many 0-3 size clothes.  I wish I'd left tags on until I knew how much clothing we'd have.

  • The bassinet stand for the uppababy bassinet. We love the stroller but he hated the bassinet.
Also, he's in the minority that loves the mamaroo.
  • I regret the snowsuit I bought. Adorable but we used it exactly 1x. I wear her under my coat (best purchase I never made) so she doesn't need a coat & her car seat has one of those blankets that goes over the seat plus a fluffy blanket underneath.

    I second the dishwasher basket.

    Also, anything swaddle.

And bigger size nipples. Not necessary.

EDITED to remove reference to loving Halo swaddle sleepsack. See my PSA post about DD nearly suffocating in it.
  • I didn't purchase them myself, but we got a ton of swaddlers. They are all in his room unopened because any attempt to swaddle him sends him over the edge and induces panic. Legs loose and arms over head or he won't sleep.
We were also gifted about thousand fleece sleepers but he gets way too hot in them. He sleeps in a onesie in a sleep sack.

Next baby (if it happens) will only be bare essentials.
  • We have a ton of swaddlers!! They were great but we stopped swaddling DD when she was a few weeks old. It doesn't help that my husband took at least 10 of the hospital swaddling blankets when she was born! Most of the big items were gifts or hand me downs so I can't really complain about those. We did have a swing but my husband got frustrated with it, tried to take it apart, and completely ruined it. So, I wish we had a swing lol.
  • Receiving blankets. I got some at my baby showers & got some handed down to me. I think I've used one so far. Wtf do people even use them for?!

  • Halo sleep sacks. We already had some, but were gifted some girly ones. My son LOVED them, but DD has wanted nothing to do with being swaddled.
